After Saturdays veedub fiasco nothing was going to stop me getting my grubby mitts on the facebook/classic car advertised Fiat Uno.

Located on the wrong side of the Pennines in Middleton Lancashire about an hour away, I'd already viewed the car (in the dark) but knew it was solid and a price had been agreed.

Despite the nearness I still had to get the train to the thieving, sorry thriving metropolis which is MADCHESTER ALLRIGHHHHT R KIDD?

Bonus shite points for getting a lift in a cat  D escrotic convertible?  No pics of that, twas the oval grilled late model though, decatted and extremely loud.

The lad was selling it on behalf of his granddad, I wasn't sure if it was just a line or not, but here we were out side granddad's bungalow, then inside supping coffee whilst documents where signed and radio front found.  Granddad was quite frail and had to give up driving, though he wasn't ready to let go of his Defender outside just yet!

The old Uno looked a bit sad its flat oxide rich paint speckled with rain though started on the key (the original battery had been found and fitted) and a bit of choke runs beautifully as only a well oiled Fiat Italian Revolving Engine can.

Sat nav app was deployed and I headed homewards, the single wiper failing to displace the now steadily falling rain.  Progress is steady rather than brisk, the cabin feels airy and spacious despite it's exterior dimensions.  I had my concerns that the 4 speed box would struggle on the motorway how wrong was I!  Whilst it could never be a match acceleration wise motorway speeds were attained - the speedo being very accurate compared to the sat nav - and maintained only slowing marginally over the Pennines.
Compared to the mk1/2 Panda it is a much more refined car, less wind and road noise, steering is precise and the whole car has a very solid feel about it.  A slightly higher and more upright driving position gives a good view of the road and confidence to claim your little piece.

Once home I was able to give the little car that can a good look over inside.

The drivers door had been bent open (my original Uno suffered the same fate at Manc hands in the 90's too) the glass has been replaced with a green tint one and door is number one priority for change/repair.

Not many of these left, although i know of one...

Have you ever done brake shoes on one of these?

Strange set up.

Around 15 years ago I remember a friend almost in tears trying to fit new brake shoes. He ended up beating them to death with a hammer ☺

Posted

my first car was a 999cc Uno. Loved it, even put a K&N filter in it  . 4 speed, but I never seemed to get annoyed by motorway buzz like I do on the Fusion (I'm getting old)

Erm, have to look at brakes tomorrow as I think they've seized on on the front, made a squeal as I  came off the motorway and performance is down! I may take to garage instead!

Seems bloody quiet after Panda's!

Lovely! What a find with those miles. A true giffer special- ultra low miles and slightly odd modifications. I wonder if those tyres are the 26yo originals?

Boy though, they are unstable at speed. I had a couple of moments in mine (one trying to keep up with a Golf GTI on an A road) where I thought I'd had it.

I've always thought the turbo must have been frightening.

edit: should say fine in a straight line - just that you could find the limits of the handling and driving skill quite quickly.

Just wheel cylinders should be OK but I reckon there must be a special tool to do the shoes

Tyres were new on last year, had quite enough of de laminating tyres on the M62 to last me a lifetime.

I really want to get rid of the phone holder and fix the glove box or replace it.

Love these! Look after it won't you?

That's the plan!

Can't wait to give it a polish, was raining this afternoon and frankly after being up for 26 hours on Saturday it had all caught up with me and I needed to rest - didn't sleep much last night due to excitement!

The Uno breaking on eBay has already sold the doors but has an interior don't know what flavour though.

Feels really solid after a panda!  This is never gonna be a performance car though it may gain some nice alloys, wider wheels will make it grip better.

I just wanted a more suitable car for going to work in, the Micetro is a bloody heavy lump to manouvere around town and is too low to jump in and out of, 4x4 panda has lighting issues despite new switches and can be a bugger to start.

Everything else is SORN until the nasty salt is gone though.

Jeezers what a grim piece of shite.

I like it a lot more than my bloody Benz.

Then again, there isn't a lot I like less.

This is the one that I posted on here! I'm glad it's gone to a shitter after all those twat comments on the post about how it's not even worth £300 M8.

I bet it won't take much to get it minty again.

Agree.

It won't take much more than a weekend of elbow grease and £37.43 in service parts to make this really, really nice.

Oh, and a good diagonal cutter for the two pounds of giffer electrickery.

Strong Chodmolestly inner corral contender, this. Announcer might announce it as a Metro, though.

Really nice find, my mum had a 1.3 uno at about there time I learnt to drive, it felt like a missile to me! I can't remember the last times I saw one on the road, it'll go with the collection of Pandas nicely.:-)

That's because that's exactly what it is. I once had a 1.3 as a hire car in Finland. Went like shit off a polished shovel!

Should of bought a VW mate, Fiats are dead unreliable.

Looks lovely, I've only ever travelled in an Uno, a facelift diesel one, bet this is great to throw around the back roads.

Looks good, one-owner-from-new cars of this age are always a nice find, I've yet to own a Fiat but do like the 80s range of Uno, Tipo & Tempra, they're getting rare now.

It'll be good to see it after a thorough polishing!

Well done on the Uno Buyage! Me and my brother were talking about this Uno the weekend and saying it seamed a decent buy for someone.

I know it's a bit of way from you but I went to Albert Looms Scrapyard in Derby yesterday and they have x2 Fiat Uno mk2's with the 999cc engines in. The drivers door had gone already on the 3dr and the passanger door is rusty at the bottom but is a red car too. The seats in the 3dr were from a 60s/11.ie in grey with blue checks though the driver seat had a tear. The other Uno is a 5dr in metalic grey. Both had black dashboards but you could swap the whole dash over if you wanted to get rid of all the holes etc.

I'm possibly over that way tomorrow or the weekend if you wanted me to get some pics or get you a black glovebox lid?

The dashboard on a 1992-2000 Fiat Fiorino is from the MK2 Uno too if happen to find one breaking near you by the way.

The tube fitted between the passanger door and front wing is what's left of a genuine accessorie Fiat ariel. As fitted to my old MK1 Uno 45S years ago. Might be able to track one down from Fiat or Italian ebay and I might have a part number for it somewhere if you need it?

We sold are MK2 Uno 1.0 ie at the start of the year and was great fun though gotta say our MK1 Uno breeze we got with the same carb 999 fire like yours has more get up and go.

Good luck with it and great to see another Fiat and a Uno on AS. :-D

It's a bugger that my interior is brown, didn't even know they did them.  Looks like I'd have to change the whole interior to get it perfect and I've no idea how bad it'll be to do.  Took me 4 long afternoons to change the Panda's interior and there's hardly owt to them.

Derby's not too bad to get to for me, at least if I had a glove box lid it would tidy it up a bit and maybe that plasti-dip paint in brown could make it presentable for now?

The door is rusted through on the bottom and the top so that's a priority.  I wouldn't mind a five speed box for a spare too.

Trouble with missing doors is missing matching door cards will have gone with it too...

Yeah pics and a glove box lid would be great,  and good to know about Fiorinos too.

My Haynes manual turned up today so will be tackling those sticky callipers once it stops raining.

Funny thing about Unos is that they sold 8 million of them, didn't see any in Italy last year that I can remember though loads of early Panda's, at Italian car shows you'll be lucky to see one, the Turbo seems to be the only model getting any interest, such a shame.

the doors on mine rusted through at the bottom. I replaced one door (in about half hour - you know, couple of screws) from a scrappy and got a whole new interior (apart from door cards) for about £50 for a scrappy about 13-14 years ago.

The glove box would never stay shut on mine.

Brown is a rare interior I think  :-(

Good cars Unos, I preferred them to the 205 unless diesel. Good feel about them, somehow - and the little 999FIRE is great.

Glad to see this went to a good home, Italian cars are an itch I haven't scratched yet, but that's because I have a job and they would prefer my attendance there as opposed to a lay-by.

The Brown interiors was from memory mainly fitted to early Red and Burgundy coloured mk2 Uno's 45/45s models. The 93 onwards Uno 1.0 i.e Start etc models in White / Red / Black all had black dashboards with a Tarten type patterened trim .Uno 60s / 1.1 ies in Metalic Red had Brown check interiors thinking about it too.

I'm going to Derby tomorrow so if I get chance to pop in Looms I'll get you a Glovebox if you like the plasti - dip sounds like a good idea by the way and some pictures of both cars.

The cars both had engine and boxes in place, no idea if either was 5 speed though some idiot has smashed the lights and some of the exterior and interior trim on both but alot of its still intacted.

We have a 2000 X reg Fiorino Van and the front doors have duct tape holding them all togther at both the base and bellow the windows.

Yer the none Turbo Uno's that are left in the UK seam to be largely ignored which I agree is a real shame as there great cars to drive. Though it means the few that survive remain fairly cheap.

We sold our 92K reg Uno 1.0 ie 3dr in Black for £600 with only one previous owner and 55,000 on it. You couldn't find the equivalent Nova or R5 / 205 for that!

Saying that a few nice low milleage cars have sadly been in recent years snapped up by the knuckle dragging lash up heros who are fitting Uno turbo / Punto GT engines in them.

So it's a good time to get a Uno if we had more money and space I'd buy as many up as we can!

Never had an FTP in 3-4 years of Uno ownership as main car.

(Well a drained battery once due to leaving lights on - doesn't count, not it's fault!)

We had in are family a MK1 Uno 45, 45S, 60S, MK2 1.0 ie and a 1.4 ies Start plus. Plus our current MK1 Uno 45 and I've gotta say they all been on the whole reliable and dependable cars.

The Uno 1.4 Start plus which was my mums had 185,000 on it. Sadly my mum scrapped it [ not my choice ] after divorcing my dad and having no cash etc to get it through another Mot but still ran / drove fine.

An the Uno we have now has been driven the last 3 days on a 47 mile commute each way without complaint.

So anybody who says old Fiats are unrealiable etc can Jog on!
