Who is best for multicar/classsic insurance?

Bit left field, but have you tried direct line.

Classic wanted £157 for my Rover 214. (limited mileage etc)

Direct line was £170, numerous miles, business cover, but £45 quidco cashback, so actually worked out cheaper.

I will be trying some of these soon.

Stupid question, how does it work? I will want to add cars as the insurance that is on at the moment runs out, is it just one policy or multiple policies grouped together?

Just one policy... cars & drivers can be added as required and usually don't increase the premium, although there's usually a £25 'service charge'.

Brilliant.

I'm with Peter James. Usually a £15 admin charge per change. Nippa is my modern car, so that earns NCD. Don't forget all the other benefits, like EU breakdown cover etc.

Any examples of what the multi car policy covers and costs? I'm a bit baffled

Mine is Footman James.  Â£180/year, three cars (Vauxhall Viva, Ford Sierra, Vauxhall Astra) all declared as modified.  5000 miles per year with any mix of the miles and the cars.  I have to have access to another car.

Footman or Peter James are the usual ones for folks round here.

Both pretty similar I think, except FJ has (or had) a slightly higher admin charge for changes to the policy and don't use/accrue NCB. Better if your NCB is used on another policy.

PJ use NCB so worth going for them if you have some.

Currently I'm with PJ, I was with FJ for a number of years.

I'd go with Flux or Footman.

For gods sake, steer WELL clear of Lancaster, you WILL regret it!

I have the daimler with Gott and winn, have been with them for years.

adrian flux wanted £60 a year fully comp on my 64 mini, and £120 per year on my metro turbo. (both 2000 miles a year restriction)

I found it MUCH cheaper to do mine separately  . Aviva for the Honda HRV  ,the renewal quote was £60 cheaper than online quote ( Go Conpare )   170   or   online 230 , so i renewed !!

RAC  ( Highway policy)  for grey import Pajero ,renewal quote was 230 ...I declined ...But online quote was 165 ...so i accepted !!

As a multi policy both were 230 each  with  Aviva

That's what I found, too. Often, the multicar quote was more expensive, than insuring the chod individually.

Oh, and Direct Line bumraped me royally for a completely trivial endorsement on my licence.

I dunno if i could have done the Pajero on a classic policy ? , but it tows a  horsebox and that and its hardly a classic car ...so I would rather have the RAC name on the certificate !

Footman James seem to use 20 years old for a definition of classic.  Doesn't matter what it is - I have insured Mk3 Astras as classics, and with the best will in the world...........

Just changed to Hagerty, 100 quid cheaper than my renewal with Footman James. 7 cars, total value of about £45,000, newest 1986, limited miles on all of them, either 1000 or 3000, premium €400 = happy man... Oh and no admin fee for changes.

Posted

Capsuleboy do you know if Hagerty will cover moderns on the same policy as classics?

Mixed modern/classic policy is the biggest plus for FJ/PJ for me.

Posted

For the Hagerty policy you have to have an "everyday" car insured with a different company.

I have the wife's Cube, hack Multipla and Avantime with Swiftcover on a multi policy. It worked out cheaper as they allow NCB on all the cars.

When I tried the Avantime with Footman James the premium went sky high.

Of course, the downside of this cheap stuff for us old folk has become evident while trying to insure my 17 year old son, not easy...

Ah, that's the thing, with FJ/PJ the newest car on the policy is considered your everyday car. So having your newest car of a low insurance grp is a big bonus. Conversely having a high grp car as the newest can make the policy much more expensive.

My FJ policy has no daily, I have a daily on another policy so it isn't obligatory.  Might well be a better way to do it though.

That was until this year.

I rang up to add the 20 year old ZX to the Pleasure Wagon policy, they told me the underwriter's terms had changed (Ageas, from memory), and now just consider it "an old car", and "not a classic because they'd had every Tom/Dick/Harry ringing up to insure old Micras etc."

Our Will has an N-reg 106D with them, so he must have just sneaked in under the wire.

For the ZX I ended up going with the cheapest of the Moneysupermarket quotes, and cancelled within my 14 days, so it cost me £43, that's £7 cheaper than adding and removing it on my FJ policy.

Got my T25 Westfalia insured with Admiral... Agreed valuation 12.5k.

£125 fully comp...

Nearly half compared to the quote i got from a broker I'd been using for years.

My insurance for the 79 colt is nearly up and I was paying £103 fully comp with RH specialist insurance and it has euro cover salvage retention and breakdown cover all included, that was 3k miles limited

my renewal has come through and I added the sierra to it and they want £103 for the colt again and £106 for the sierra total £209 I had planned on adding the series to it but I bet that's another hunna bucks, its also 3k limited,

I was expecting some kind of discount since I only have one arse and cant drive both at once.

After reading some of the low quotes for multiple cars I though I would shop around so first one is Peter James as recommended on this site,

ah shit they only class a classic as 30 years old see bellow, sierra not old enough,

I live in a low risk postcode have not claimed ever have no penalty points and am 44 years young and have three modern policy's with maximum protected no claims bonus,

I have even tried traders policy's but the quotes are three times the price some members quote on here what am I doing wrong ?

Not using the telephone is what you are doing wrong.

Get on the blower and speaker to a person.

I've been on the blower to my insurers but the only classic insurer I've called so far was my existing one RH Insurance,

After looking on the website above all the things I have on this policy are not included but can be added at extra cost which nearly doubles it.

I have tried for three traders policy's and all have been well over a grand even taking into account my no claims,
