Done this repair with a cheap mig and looks a bit of a mess but it's welded from both sides with no gaps :s1e6fe9ad9f81c988a63028c9ec41b5e7.jpg

Absolutely. But in future, turn up the power a bit & don't move the torch so quickly.

Grind it back, seam seal and paint and it will get through.

Doesnt look pretty but as long as it is solid enough it should be ok. Run a grinder over the welds to tidy it up a bit then bung some sin sealer over it and it will be fine

Buff it of with a flapwheel and shutz it and it will look 100% better.

What's a good underseal to use? The factory underseal is quite thick, white rubbery texture painted black.

Thanks for the replys guys!

Can you loosen it by kicking it really hard? if so fail. If no amount of kicking will shift it, you're sorted. Lash on your favourite thick gloop, sit back and have a beer

I would recommend smacking the welds with a bfo hammer, as said if it's solid slap some bullshit on it and your away

Looks like my early welding. A flap discs on the grinder can turn ugly welding into something quite nice. If its welded both sides it will be absolutely fine.

Have presented similar for test, asked the tester what he thought and was told it was "sufficient".

Flap wheel and underseal to upgrade to a pro level finish.

I have smacked it all around with a hammer, it's really solid

Nice one boys, welcome davie, what car is it?

My welder would describe it as pigeon sh*t, but as above-Grind it back and seal it and it will look fine.

He'd be right, that wouldn't survive a proper tap with a hammer, wayyyyy too cold.

I wouldn't pass it, many will. Cover it in underseal and pretend it never happened.

I've smacked it with a hammer all over and it seems solid.

Its a citroen ax lol

Finger and thumbs, if in doubt corrosion assessment tool.

Appendix c

"Having identified the important load bearing members and 'prescribed areas' on a vehicle, the tester should determine whether they are excessively corroded, firstly by visual inspection and then by finger/thumb pressure.

If necessary careful scraping or light tapping of the affected areas with the Corrosion Assessment Tool is permitted.

Excessively corroded metal, or metal treated with filler, emits a duller sound than does unaffected metal. It is not necessary to apply heavy impact blows or to use a sharp instrument to 'dig' at the structure."

For corrosion, yes, for iffy repairs he can fail it just on the visuals if he likes. It should be evident that the repair is at least as strong as the original structure.

Of course, underseal all over it so he can't see it and he can only give an advisory. Depends if you like bits of your chassis falling out after 6 months of road salt. :D

I'm sorry to be critical, but that's not welded.

You've just joined the two bits of metal with melted filler wire.

The idea is to melt both pieces of metal and "flow" the pool of melted metal through the join making one piece of metal.

Grinding and slabbering sealant on it may make it look better and pass the MoT, but it'll not be any stronger.

I get the MIT tester to weld my cars, that way it always passes!

Plus I don't like sparkly metal flying at me.

It's an art welding, and like art beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

I just leave welding to my local garage too, who also mot the car, worth it for peace of mind. Welcome to the forum btw 😀

If that's on an AX, it's probably the strongest part of the car................
