barefoot
I had to fit a gas heater to 'the bay of lasting joy' since the thought of running a petrol fired eberspacher didn't bear thinking about. The Moog
The Moog
The space saving though is very impressive vs the gas heater jobbie. Hoiw much of a chore would it be to run from a separate tank of cherry/domesitc heating oil/veg for one of these? or is the bigger concern the loss of space of having a separate tank negating the space gained by binning off the gas heater? These come with a 10l so can lob cherry in there if you want. I know the urban motorhome chap calculated the benefits of running cherry and it wasn't much, they are pretty efficent. Much more so than a normal diesel exhaust. The exhaust is sealed well and exits out the side of the van. An Aussie on youtube showed the difference in heater versus truck which was quite surprising. The benefit to me is that I can run from the fuel tank so don't need a separate feed in the tank. I have cut the pick up line about 1cm from bottom of the tank filter so the heater will run out before running van dry. Use I think is about 2l a day running with low Hertz. My intent is to use the van for diving and being off grid a little so it is not just the fire, flue being removed, but also the extra gas cylinder. They draw fuck loads of amps at start up which means running directly to battery - my leisure battery has dual terminals so no real stress. I have had to run better cables (I will make them more permanent soon) I have fitted a rubber silencer to pump so inside you can't really hear anything. The Moog
Last week I got a confused.com £20 Halfords voucher. I needed a new jack so used it to get one. Got an email through for a free MOT - Saab is due one so why not try. BuggerTbf I thought the windscreen wouldn't pass and the exhaust blow was getting worse. Other bits are just wear and tear.Briefly I pondered the multipla on here. But then with@NorthernMonkey advice I splashed out on stainless exhaust.. cause lasts and sounds better. Oh and a new slightly bigger downpipe and performance car. And uprated FPR. That opens up the possibility of a remap in the future. Then an almost 300 bhp fwd dog wagon. You never know when you have to get to the dog park quickly. BeEP, Shirley Knott, Jim Bell and 5 others

The Moog
What a day ... Plan was to remove the old bits then strap on new shiny things to the Saab.Nice turboy engine underneath is a bit of surface corrosion. Plan is to brush back and corrolless sub framesBest bit of replacing stuff is that the choppy chop can come outExhaust removed and then on to the sub frame bushes. These were properly deadFollowing a YouTube video we holesawed the rubber bitBefore levering the sub frame down and getting the biggish part out. Choppy chop was used cut the inner race - but only after a dash to screwfix for shorter blades after Northern Monkey almost opened his own nail bar by taking off my fingers.Subframe supported and old outThink these might be an improvement Then it went a bit downhill Getting at turbo bolts was a pain, but they started coming undone. Untill one snapped. The other two are out but reinforcements were called after an hour of fiddlingThis is an inductive heaterIt is a flameless approach except the studs aren't ferrous - meaning didn't get hotBonnet was closed for the day - tomorrow the stud will be coming out. Jim Bell
Urgh. Nobody like the sound of snapping. Hopefully tomorrow will be a less snappy and far more spinny day. The Moog

The Moog
This morning started bright and cheerful - hope was in the air I popped by Halfords to purchase a stud extractor to help the job alongIt certainly did that by snapping the stud flush. Fucksticks. You can see the bottom stud is bent as well so that will need replacingNext plan was to take the turbo off to get it drilled... That lasted 5 minutes before it was decided to just take the manifold offCoolant outOil offManifold off - one bolt was finger tight. That isn't goodAhh. Bugger. It had snapped in the past and someone has ignored it. It has been added to our ignore list for now. Once the turbo was off, it was checked for play. It wobbled more than a weeble - new turbo time. £120 for a new unit and delivered Saturday. Plus exhaust manifold gasket, oxygen sensor and cv boot. Parts are over 4 figures now - better not blow head gasket next week! Coprolalia, Rave, dome and 4 others 3

The Moog
Yep. It definitely goes downhill from here. Not my day for turbos.Just to develop that point... NM had to get his new (very nice) car from auction. I went with him to drive his RR home. Way there it started making squeaking noises under load.... Way back it dropped the contents of the sump through the passenger side turbo! Many faffs resulted in a big white taxi being called The Smart better not want a turbo soon or I am going NA and buying Huggy. theshadow, dome, Coprolalia and 1 other 1
The Moog
Took advantage of the nice sunny weather to de rust and recoat some the chassis brace for the SaabHad seen better daysWire brushed then built hamber appliedOnce dried then it was on with couple of coats of correless chassis paintLet it dry in the sun and it goes rock hardTook some time to have a look at the Motorhome. The fuel pump doesn't seem to want to run. Pulled it a out to check for bad connections but can't see anything. Think it might be a case of replacing it. Shirley Knott
Reading back through this lot, it's clear you've had some misserable times of late car wise, I can relate, although my troubles pale in comparison. Seeing you battling on here spurs me on somewhat, sometimes old cars are proper bastards! It's not hard to see how people end up getting fed up and scrapping them eh? The Moog
Oh yes.. luckily I have use of a ramp and an expert to lead/help. I have since given up my changing cars every two minutes, so hopefully spending £1200 getting the Saab MOT worthy is a good investment. dome and Wgl2019

jonathan_dyane
You can drill out the studs in situ if you make up a couple of drill guides to slip inside the manifold and use one of those 90 degree drill accessories. I would recommend using left handed drill bits ideally and it should make it unscrew on the 2nd hit. mitsisigma01 and The Moog

The fact we have mostly had it apart and that it has a healthy oil leak from the crankshaft seal, probably means it is easier to take head off. We can then renew the timing chains & guides, then get a local place who charges £30 or so to fix it. Stanky and Jim Bell
