Been up on forum for a week or so and only interest is for doors and wings.

 

When I check sold ones on eBay they are only about £600 ISH. Yes there are some for sale up at £1500 but they haven't sold.

 

It's that old issue of small potential pool of people that would want it, most of them already have one, wrong engine, needs money spent, wrong brand etc.

 

Will explore options tomorrow as someone has repeatedly pointed out DNS.

Cartakeback only offered me 200 quid more for my Astra, bite their hand off.

After a long chat today the green machine is getting a stay of execution. It is off to the farm for a few months to see if a head turns up at reasonable money.

 

 

Alternatively a t series engine will drop in as well.

 

Apparently the suggest Rover V8 swap is a bit more challenging!

My 99p start eBay thought was vetoed by my learned colleague.

 

So will give it a couple of months as will be out of the way, out of missus Moog's way and won't cost anything.

 

If nothing comes up by Christmas then it will either end up with my learned colleague or going to be bean cans.

£600!!! You would need the gearbox, ECU and driveshafts too.

 

Good that this is getting a stay of execution, hopefully you'll find a head or complete T series cheaply.

That was the later, related T series. Moog's car has the M series.

Mr Njgleeds was a very nice chap yesterday and helped me change the brake fluid in the little Mazda.

 

It has done some autotesting and trackdays so as a precaution it was time to change. The mx5 has a massive brake master cylinder so my usual pressure bleeder won't work on it. Therefore standard 2 person job applied.

 

 

Once the fluid was changed we took the opportunity to have a look underneath to see what might be needed for MOT in January .

 

First up checked whether front pads would last another track day

 

Then a general look over

 

Chassis rails

 

Stuff that needs sorting

 

 

My fixes are still good

 

Finally noticed that someone has had it away with my Tyre pressure sensors. Bit pointless as the main control unit is sitting in the car.

 

Underneath it is pretty solid. Ideally it would all be brushed back and then coated with vactan and undersealed.

 

I was having thoughts last night of getting a car tilter and doing it say march next year. Use the opportunity to take the gearbox out, get it on the side, undent the chassis rail, clean it all up, stick some new metal in where needed and then paint it all.

 

Is this a stupid idea?

That depends on how tight it all is - and how much if an arseache it would be to drain/refill ....... I personally wouldn't/haven't tipped anything without draining every bit of any demonic fluid that could piss out on me when I least expected it! 

Makes working on it a shitload better though.....

My current plan (in my head) is to find a week early next year,

• buy a car tilter,
• get it up on its side and clean off the rust the paint,
• sort out chassis rails and any other bits underneath, 
• remove gearbox,
• change clutch and refit new(old) gearbox without crunchy 4th gear,
• maybe remove the coors box. 

 

Ideally I would find a place to rent/borrow for a week that means I can work under cover rather than on a drive way. 

 

 

Drove the little car to work today and it was most enjoyable.  The only two things that are bugging me at the moment is a tinkling above 60mph (I think it is a clip rattling) and the play in the brake pedal. 

 

With the engine off the brake pedal is rock hard with a great feel, start the engine and then there is about an inch of play in the pedal before it starts working. The brakes work really well and stop the car once they kick in, but would be great to get rid of that initial slop.

After driving the mx5 to work again I finally had enough of the squeaking that was driving me nuts. I did have scary thoughts about it being suspension related ..

 

At work, hood down I prodded and poked at all the fasteners, or areas I could make squeak but no cigar. Head under car and bouncing the suspension gave no clues. Giving up I opened the boot to get something out and a small SQUEAK  was emitted - feeling like Sherlock Holmes in his mind palace I hunted the suspect.  

 

It is the most unlikely thing - the battery!  It has a metal bar running over the top of it and although it clamps down the plastic squeaks. Being a smoll track car I tend not to have the radio on and the battery is in the boot hence being able to here it. 

 

So a bit of cardboard or something will fix that. Jobs a good un

In the end cardboard wasn't needed, a squirt of wd40 and squeak be gone.

 

Spent 30 minutes putting all the spare bits back in the rover. It is off to the farm in the next two days.

 

I know someone who is gutted to see it gone. He rushes out to stand outside the car to be let in. Getting him out tonight was fun as he got in the back. Then the front - basically as far away from me as he could get.

Here is what is going to be replacing it

 

Downside is that windows don't close so it has about 2 inches of water in the footwell.

 

Just before trackday I wanted to fit the Randall cowl mod on mx5. It takes cold air from below the windscreen which apparently is best place.

 

Ramair hose ordered after measuring the hole.

 

 

Go to fit it and slight issue

 

It's probably 5cm too short.

 

Walking round my house trying to find something to extend it. First draught wasn't successful

 

Njgleeds rummaged in his garage and found and old air feed hose

 

Attacked with Dremel

 

Then fitted on to the ramair hose

 

Jobjobbed.

 

Have got a washer bag to fit to replace the plastic washer bottle.

 

 

Which is lucky as some idiot propped the old bottle up whilst he fitted the air feed. Then forgot about it and took the car to the shops, only to be alerted by the smell of plastic burning.
