Does that mean I still need to send a payment to your Nigerian Uncle or not? It's just that my unknown relatives inheritance has come at just the right time and need to get the release fee to him asap.

Don't be so hasty, maybe he has a barn full of Zazophorets, or a concept FSO convertible, and a poor grasp of English.

What would the ransom be for Autoshite?  A quid?

Seriously though, thanks Dave, you are epic.

Well done Dave, we all owe you a beer, and that would be ALOT of beer!

This hacking malarkey, why do they do it? Is it just for fun? Teenage geeky herberts having a go etc?

Don't understand....

Can we hack them back and change their screensaver to a picture of a Laguna 2 with steam pouring from it?

With the text underneath saying "let that be a warning to you all"

They won't be back.......

Most servers run a handful of programs (usually Apache web server and something like Wordpress, or some soft of forum software) so they find a vulnerability that hasn't been closed (or hasn't had a fix written for it yet) and gain admin access to the server. They will either nick the info if it's useful to them like customer data and either charge a ransom to the company for it, sell it on, steal the identities of the customers or use a "Hello it's Microsoft, you have a virus on your computer" style scam to get £. In the case of forums and smaller websites they'll not really be bothered about the data (though they'll happily add the email addresses of members to their spam lists) but will want access to the server - they can use it to send out spam or use it to infect visitors. The visitors PCs then become part of a massive network of computers that they have control over (usually without the owner knowing) and they can then use it for what they like. They usually use it for DDoSing websites (distributed denial of service) - hammering away at a website until it goes down or behaves oddly. Often when it behaves oddly they can break their way into that server too. Back in the days before Windows XP service pack 2 came out there was millions of zombie PCs as part of these networks, the owners never installing patches, downloading anything and everything off torrent sites etc.
