Unlikely you've cooked it, what was temp like on the run home?

Fill header tank with water and run it. If it's leaking badly you'll not be long seeing where from.

If it's water pump doing the timing belt etc wouldn't be a bad idea if you are keeping it

They are tough engines, I lost all my oil once (cracked sump) and being young and stupid drove it home dry after I fixed it I went on to do another 30k with no complaints.....Wouldn't advise that though!

In heavy traffic in London it went high on the temp scale but settled down as soon as I got some air through it. Not sure if fan was kicking in...

It'll be grand. Just part and parcel of owning an older car with low mileage, waking them up from their slumber tends to make things break IME.

Looks great. The pic with the two mondies face-to-face makes it look like it's the '90's (at first glance)!

 

Re tyres: please don't buy ditch finders! You should be able to get something branded at least in that size for around 200.

This is what I spent on the blue one, and the green one needs all this again, and maybe do camshaft seals and thermostat as well....£400 + £200 tyres...(and fuel filter)

A lot of the jobs are fairly simple, it's quite an easy car to work on I find. Have a crack at a few jobs yourself!

 Could also be the coolant pipe if it's tracked along the undertray.

 

+1 on this. These are notorious for rotting out as they are made from chocolate steel. I had one of these rot out and subsequently cooked the engine.

Yeah, I think it's a water pump leak, I'm thinking the noise it makes is now more likely the pompe. I'm aware they can rust out there too.

 

I'd love to have a go at the jobs, lack of facilities (no off road), tools and general common sense holds me back

 

Maybe I should put a help wanted thread up with some beer tokens on offer.

I'd say have a go, have a read through what's involved first then take your time, if you aren't sure give us a shout, I've squandered 12 years mending Mondeos on the side of the road.

Mending mondeos you say?! Clutch replacement is on the cards for mone in the near future!

I paid £600 for a clutch to be fitted to a 1.8 pez.

The clutch went again not long after - might have been fluid on the friction plate or summat, I dunno. The garage were OK about it but said if they stripped it and it was a different fault (i.e they hadn't fitted a defective clutch) it wouldn't be a free job.

 

At that point a nice man with a Beavertail came and negated the issue in exchange for £107

Quite high,a little bit of judeer and not much travel. Had a quote from Mr clutch but read bad things about them and don't want just anyone doing it due to subframe alignment.

It's been like that a long time, didn't judder though, that's probably a leaking crank seal, either that or the clutch has got hot at some point. I'd find somewhere that does taxis, they're used to doing stuff like this, that's what I did. A lot of garages don't want clutch work or so it seems.

 

Mr Clutch should come with a guarantee though, there's plenty of places on the other hand that specialise in clutches.

Mr clutch do come with a warranty but doing the mileage i do (over 1000 this week) it's classed as high use and they only give 1 year warranty. Plus it has to go back for adjustment regularly or warranty void even though it's hydraulic!

Egg,you can drop subframe or take engine out apparently, subframe out is easiest but it looks like there is enough room anyway.

A year isn't bad though I wouldn't have said. By that you'd have had 50,000 out of a clutch at least!

Tell you something,that car drives like new and a friend said I'd be stupid doing clutch on it if it failed but I've had enough changing cars now and if it needed a clutch plus 200 on mot in March I'd spend it. Better devil you know and being in care and using it for home visits it will physically earn it's money spent back.

Looking good there egg_man, I hope the mats are proper Mondeo ones and not some poundland tripe. I very briefly drove a top spec Mk1 Ford Mondeo Ghia some years back and I did liked it. I remember it had front electric seat and all round electric windiws/sunroof and mirrors. I still think thier image is fresh and clean despite the number of ratty Mondeos I've seen wearing poundland wheel trims.

 

The Arctic Monkeys even mentioned a Ford Mondeo in one of thier songs.

This morning I have fixed* the alarm system in the GLX, well prevented it going off, and reinstated the central locking fuse. I now have double central locking again.

 

I'm learning to just do low cost and free fixes for now!
