My erstwhile shedder of distinction , the Rank Taxi Octavia has gone to meet it's maker.

To whit, I needed a new car pronto.

Up early this morning, on the trail of my quarry!

We piled into my Dad's e60 520i and set off for the southlands.

The roads were clear, if wet, and we made good progress. As I sat in the passenger seat it occurred to me that the M74 can be quite picturesque..

All too soon, we reached sunny Chester, where we were greeted by this little beauty!

Its a 1998 Peugeot 306 1.9 Dt, fitted with the legendary XUD lump!

All mechanical and simple to fettle, the only real issue is the Lucas fuel pump. I may swap it out for a Bosch one to enable the XUD to run on 90% WVO, much like the Octavia did.

Once my eyes had recovered from the interior:

(thankfully they are much easier on the erse than they are on the eye!)

I took it for a test drive.
I'd forgotten how good these things were! Despite 155k on the clocks, the suspension as taught yet compliant, the engine willing and the road holding excellent.

It does most things very well, and succeeds at being a Jack of all trades, blending the best bits of other fleet members thusly:

1/2 Clio 172 power + 2/3 CX comfort + 3/4 E30 handling = 306

We got it fuelled up and had an uneventful trip back up the road. SWMBO approves - this may last longer than the Octavia!

Home. 240 odd miles in an 18yr old French car, without incident.

No doubt another update will be along soon enough - wish me luck:)

240 miles lol... reminds me of the time we went to preston near blackpool (another frogspawn). Got there at 11:30pm... poor sod was knackered... i gave him the cash, took the banger (lasted two years!) and drove home with the missus... 290 miles... we got home at 5:30am!!!

That's the best colour of a good looking motor.

There are spare alloys to match (unless you find one under the floor), and probably a pump too, amongst other bits, to be found at Chez_KJ. Contact Explosive-Cleland for further details.

A van? Bleeding Norah, that's urinated on my French fries a bit as I always wanted to make a van from a 3 door 306.

I've had two 306 dturbos in Diablo red like yours, excellent cars. I'm sure your're well aware of the pump and turbo tuning possibilites

the thought never crossed my mind;)

This was mine. Bought for a horrific £6495 in 2002 (I think, I forget). Exactly the same lurid seats, which I really liked. I had snazzier alloys on mine too.

I covered about 40,000 miles in it - a record beaten only by my 2CV. Then I got fed up with the heavy clutch, turbo lag and short power band. Think I sold it for about £1700 or something awful, back in 2004. Untaxed/untested since 2011. :(

I prefer my alloys;)

Looks a nice car! they're an OK brief. Due a bit more of a look today all things being equal

At five years old, mine was already developing the notorious 'wire loom to the door' issue, which often meant it randomly unlocked itself. Nice! Handled fantastically though, and did 45mpg even with me thrashing it. Constantly.

Posted

Must have used the same parts as the BX which do exactly the same (wiring to door) and my daily 306 is almost the same. I haven't got central locking or electric windows, but when I open driver's door the interior light comes on for a millionth of a nano-second then goes back off. No big deal mind.

So does this signal 320touring's return to the Crail podium?

I may indeed be tempted to GLF..need to do a baseline run first. although it is about 300kg lighter than the Octavia!

Scott's was ridiculously quick with the boost turned up, so no doubt it'd be a performer.

I've had loads of these. In fact it was 306 diesels that got me hooked on diesel cars. I did over 50k miles in one year in my first 1. The last one I had was a HDi still good though. Would have another in a heart beat.

I arose from my seat at the crack of 13.40, and set to having a swatch at this Gallus Gallic Go Getter!

First up was sorting the sore paw:

I took the 4th alloy to a local tyre place, who diagnosed a faulty valve centre as being the cause of the flat tyre - they replaced it free of charge! One of the staff even took time out to tell me about how you can turn up the pump to make it faster:)

then it was time for a general tidy up - so out came the hoover and the interior cleaning stuff

The steering wheel was surprisingly clean - certainly compared to other cars I have bought!

Next up, the very important job of getting some tunes set up!

then it was onto the engine bay and time for a check over of all the general engine accouterments..

Coolant first:

Obviously it had previously been sick over itself to a large degree - The water in the header tank is hoachin!

luckily no signs of oil/mayo in the coolant or water in the oil, so I reckon a coolant flush should sort things out

Next up was the oil:

Bang on the minimum with no mayo showing. A quick top up sorted that out.

Lastly, I had a quick clean of the bay to make it a touch more presentable

Very nice

How is your bonnet sound deadening lined up to fit over the intercooler? Mine's hanging off everywhere and I really should tidy it up, but have yet to see a pic of how they should look...

Does this answer it?

Yes. much prettier than mine. Will have to look at how to fix mine, looks like it's riveted on, so maybe some cable ties? Or just leave it alone, it seems to sit over the intercooler frame ok*

Alarmingly this seems to be getting a fair bit of lovvin over on Pistonheads..

Just goes to show that shite shedding can bring us all together:)

Posted

What's that big lump of shite on the battery terminal? Or are you leaving it alone until it needs looking at?

It looks to be a shower cap to replace a missing terminal cover..

Glad it seems healthy, that coolant explosion looked grim.

These are one of the best mainstream cars to drive, great ride and handling balance.

I think someone has opened the cap when it was warm tbh looking at the mess.

We shall see:)

O'Reilly? If you want a crap-spec van version then get over here and drag one back.

Just get looking at DoneDeal and admire the grimness of Oirish spec tat.
