Is eBay the worst place to buy cars? I mean from a price point of view. I've been looking at various cars on there recently and found differences on prices, sometimes small differences and sometimes massive differences even on the same cars. Where do you guys find is the best place?

Good quality cars are not cheep,

EBay auto trader Gumtree are all roughly the same price wise,

Idiots frequent all the above. From a price point perspective Autotrader offer a guide to the retail price when setting up a listing and charge the most thus filtering out more of the chancers / pilchards. They also highlight CATC/D cars in the listings so not to distort the market.

I've bought and sold most of my cars/bikes on ebay in the last ten years and had no problems, it's no different to any other source IMO, it's all about the ability to weed out the crap. There is good stuff out there being sold by genuine folk - you just have to wade through the idiots, losers, time-wasters and con-artists to get there and that is unfortunately something that only comes with experience.

Don't remember it being any different when the FreeAd/local rag classifieds were the main (pretty much the only) source, the try-on merchants and morons were present there back then so wouldn't unduly run down ebay etc as searching for anything you need is way, way easier nowadays. I'd hate to go back to the old days!

It's not so much the idiots and crap being sold. It's more to do with price differences. For example last week I spied a Jeep Grand Cherokee on autotrader at £695. 4.0 in good condition. Same dealer advertised on eBay with a near £500 more, why? Also on forums for minis when it comes to parts you can get stuff much cheaper than on eBay. I know there's fees on there but why such a price difference?

^^I agree, I know what you mean - There's a good deal of 'Chancing your arm' I think, some will always try it on in the hope of snagging someone who is desperate or ignorant or just too lazy to shop around and they cash in. It's the same deal at autojumbles.

The best course of action is to email the high-price Johnnies and ask them to justify their price, unless they can come up with a compelling reason(s) then go elsewhere, when it doesn't sell, they might (stress might) get the message. As the yanks say 'Money talks, bullshit walks'.

That Jeep might have been priced at £ 500 more, but is it worth more ? You go look at both and make that crucial decision, its your hard earned cash. If in doubt buy both !!

It was the same car. The dealer was advertising on autotrader and eBay.

I might have been unlucky but I have sold three cars on ebay and had issues with idiots every time. I would much prefer to sell through forums but there isn't always time.

If you have proper cash money ebay can be good because most of the mutants that peruse it don't have ANY money.

I find that if you are looking to buy something then actually having money helps.
