Hey little sister Shogun*

Ok, it's a land cruiser.

The lip between inner and outer sills is very soft in places and nonexistent in others.

Can I plate right across or do I need to recreate the lip?

Posted

no mot type reason for the lip to be recreated

looking at the pictures you may have a fairly large area to replace once you dig a bit deeper!

it would probably work out easier in the long run to recreate the inner and outer separately as per original. it would also be simpler to incorporate effective drain holes as well as looking tidier.

good luck 8)

I'm debating whether to patch the holes or replace a couple of inches of the whole length of both inner and outer sills. There's a plastic cover sill that hides it all down to the lip so doesn't have to look great, just be solid.

Cut out all the rot and see what you're left with. Piece it back together from the inside out is how I usually do it.

reminds me of  the n/s rear sill on my mx5. I've just been running with full rear 'sill ventilation' rather than bodge with filler till next mot....kurusted and squirting with waxoyl helped a bit....

Yip, cut out all the rot then weld a patch over it. If you butt weld it'll look neater but it's a pain in the hole given it'll not be seen, Putting some weld through primer down before you weld on the patch should keep the grot at bay.

Fill with expanding foam, trim once cured to shape, paint with black gunk.

This is the autoshite way....

Didn't you miss the bit about cutting cereal boxes to shape?

Had an hour at this yesterday and cut the rot out. Might have to cut some more.

I wish the land cruiser was on its side like this pic suggests but it's just the iPad playing silly buggers.

The inner sill is corrugated for want of a better word so no nice straight edge to weld to.

Most of the time was spent wrestling with the side step. The middle bracket behaved, the rear one didn't but at least relinquished the step. The front bracket was being particularly obstinate however. I couldn't get the grinder to its bolts so just cut through the bracket. I'll weld it back together later but it serves it right for messing with me while I had the grinder in my hand.

I dropped the running grinder on me when I was lying on my back. Luckily I had changed the 1mm disc to a flap disc so instead of a scene from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it just took off like a ferret and chewed through its own cable.

Jeepers, that could have been unpleasant. Hope your sis is going to be grateful for this, looks like a job and a half.

dumb question, but can you buy repair/replacement sills on these, or are you going to have to make up something up for it?

How is the chassis? They tend to rot quite bad at the back. Not as bad as Pajeros, but almost...

This is surplus to requirements for sis and her hubby. When it failed its mot, they were offered a paltry sum which immediately increased by £200 when sis hesitated, so she gave me a call. I'll try and mot and sell it for them and we can share the extras*.

I don't know of any replacement sills so I was just going to slap some new steel in there.

I had to weld the near side chassis rail and fabricate a new bracket on the rear axle for a panhard rod type thing for its last mot. After sorting the sills, ill give the chassis a clean up and paint.

My old '98 L200 was very soft underneath. Worse than my 40 year old land rover.

Ah but the Land Rover of 40 years has had 13 outriggers  2 rear crossmembers 4 dumb irons ... already ..fookin crappy old things

... but they're good for learning to weld.

That´s like the Land Rover owner who is so proud of his Defender with 350.000km on the clock.

But the heap had two engines, three gearboxes, various axles and much more changed.

Yeah but... The land rover is always fixable. My road worthy one is 48 year old this year. Three years ago, I took the body off and fixed the chassis. I have a couple of others in their 40s that need some work but they're never beyond repair even for an amateur like me.

I'll try and keep my allegro alive but it will be much more difficult.

I'll be surprised if this land cruiser is still around in 2046.

I need to get this jap truck off the drive so summoned up some arsedness.

I like right way up welding but I'm a wind turbine ( not a big fan - in joke with my daughter, soz) when it comes to lying on my back welding.

Even less keen on the offer up - cut - fold - offer up - cut - offer up - shit I've cut too much off - start again patch fabrication process.

No prizes for you eggspurts for naming this donor wing..post-5582-0-76288300-1457911712_thumb.jpg

But a wee bit of it will live on.

It will be when the plastic sill cover goes back on.

Watch out for future updates when I can muster up some enthusiasm to tackle the other patches. But don't hold your breath.

Since finishing the welding, I've moved house and been busy with other things. I need to get this thing out of my way now.

I have to fit a new wheel bearing on the front. These colorado's seem to be awkward when it comes to bearing replacement.

The whole hub assembly needs to come off, so that's three ball joints that hadn't been freed in many a year.

It would appear the drive flange is pressed into the bearing and the bearing is then pressed into the steering knuckle.
