Bonnet scoops

Why have them?  I'm looking at you Mr Impreza and I can see you too, Mr Kia Sedona.  Show off?  My Saab 9-5 never needed one nor do the myriad turbo diesels out there. Are they really necessary? Discuss.

When your vehicle runs an intercooler then they work more efficiently with cool air hence the bonnet scoop, if they can be put elsewhere they can get cool air through the grill but some engine bays are well cramped so easier and cheeper to slap them on top of the engine and cut a hole in the bonnet

Technically some Imprezas did as the intercooler is on top of the engine. Brilliant idea that"Hey lets put this cooler above something hot"

Old engines - air intakes directly above the carbs/supercharger.No longer work with cars with complicated airbox systems.

Some cars have them for the intercooler which obviously makes sense, but that's just a packaging issue that they're not in front of the radiator.

Doesn't the BINI have a fake one?

The way I see it is if you have a top mount intercooler then you need an appropriate scoop with ducting. If you don't have a TMIC you don't need a bonnet scoop.

TMIC with no scoop = not great cold air supply for IC, unless there is serious ducting in place.

Bonnet scoop and no IC below = knob or engine runs too warm

Posted

Some Peugeots and Citroens used TMICs without a bonnet scoop, albeit in a relatively low state of tune.

I can see why a 300bhp Impreza with a TMIC needs all the air it can get, and a 90bhp Peugeot can make do with a grille scoop.

There's a big green thing parked outside with an intercooler under the engine cover on top of the engine. No scoop and adds a whole 25hp so wildly efficient!

I need a scoop for the panda mainly to stop it filling the air filter with water, but at 18 quid, I'm out.

The mad one eyed look is not for the intercooler though it's the air intake,

That's the intercooler in the huge opening in the bumper hence no bonnet scoop,

I was going to write that I prefer to see a nice set of traditional louvres but when I googled for pics I realised that there are some downright awful applications.

no surely the Rover P6 NADA has the most number of scoops on one bonnet....

SWMBO has a suzi vitara, all throbbin' 1.6 litres and 69 bhp of it... that has a scoop too, though i think that will add absolutely nothing to the performance of the vehicle.

it has nothing to add to the car other than it look good* apparently.

Out of the ten I've had the only one that had the scoop was the pug engined td I have never even seen a petrol one with a scoop so that's extremely strange.

My 306 had a secret scoop on the underside of the bonnet. Better than shouting about it.

It's not a recent craze by any means:

it bloody better be petrol cos that is what i put in it yesterday.....

will take a pic tomorrow to prove (cos no pic, it never happened)

My Maserati has venturi-style vents in the bonnet, but that's for letting hot air out rather than ramming cold air in.

Some motors were fitted with scoops for the heater, old Pandas, I'm talking about you, and Rover Metros too I think. Didn't they have two, but one was a fake?

Although it's a fine selection of cars, I keep looking at the girl in the black jacket, looks like she is having a conversation with a cardboard box

No discussion of bonnet scoops is complete without a gratuitous picture of an XY GT Falcon:

Indeed. The bonnet scoop on the Dyane feeds fresh air into the cabin.

I presume on the 19 16v it was just to lower the temperature of the engine bay, iirc the exhaust manifold was on the rear of the engine next to the bulkhead
