My First Citroen

Recommended Posts

Yes, it's true, I've never owned a Citroen.  Until today.

Chompy_snake decided he could no longer live with the Xantia that has served so many Shiters so well, including him and his brother, and nothing would do but a Rover 75 V6 auto.  So I half-seriously offered him my MG ZT V6 manual.  Obviously he jumped at it!

So now I am the latest custodian of this famous beastie.  No pics yet as it all happened in the hours of darkness, but give me time.  I haven't even driven the Citroen yet!  No scratch that: I haven't even sat in it!

Updates to follow, naturally, but this is just an opening post to give you all the chance to point and laugh.

Meanwhile, me being Mr Fickle these days, if anyone has anything older that they'd like to swop, see me!  My roffle-prize Saab can be included in the deal if required.

Are you not getting on with the Saab? Or you on a journey to scratch all those itches?

After something like 200 miles in each, which I know isn't a big deal, I decided I preferred the Saab over the MG, so it didn't bother me much letting the MG go.  I'm not expecting to give the Citroen a lot of use-and-abuse; it's diesel, so it won't be starting up at 0600 to get me to work, not if I want to survive seeing my neighbours!  Therefore, the Xantia needs to be a stepping stone to something I'm going to treasure more, and if that means including the Saab, fine.  I'm feeling a strong urge for something 70s, or at least 80s.

Oh and it was nice to meet Mrs Chompy and all the little Chompies too.  I had no idea this was going to be a family event!

Shame its not a Bader Matic or I'd be behind you in the queue.

Clan Chompy is an event in and of itself.

I'm picturing 7 kids in the back of a xantia with their faces pressed up against the windows excited to meet a random man from a dark corner of the internet

This thread is full of fail,

Over an hour in your ownership and no mention of wankers in financed BMW or Audi's paying more per month than the cars worth. This forum is not what it used to be or has become anymore.

I'm still loving my first Citroen ownership.  True, it does smoke like bejaysus in the mornings now that it's cold, and I'm not sure that the fuel consumption is what it could be, but it's a nice place to be and drives superbly.

If it passes the MOT in January not-too-terribly/expensively, it will be getting 4 new speakers.  I may even hoover it.

I passionately hate each and every Citroen ownership I ever had. Not sure why I gave that rubbish five chances in my life. It failed miserably on all accounts.

The most disappointing thing about Citroens is, that if they actually built what they had in mind initially, they could be brilliant.

Most of us already know what this car looks like, but just because I can...

Yes please!  Chompy's got some bits and bobs to send over when we can get a relay established, so if you'd lump them in, I'd appreciate it very much.  Molto Grazie. :)

Or if you want to see it before the 405 seats of much comfy velouriousness were added, here it is with stock front pews.

I once almost bought a Peugeot 405 V6 / manual trans.

If only they hadn't tried to start it with the stale gas still in it....it might have been mine.

But that was back in 2008, and the memory of those comfortable seats is with me to this day.

In a word--PLUSH.

I remember reading that Peugeot, Citroen and Renault used to start with the seat and then design the rest of the car around it....

Epic.

Thank you kindly Mr V.  You've saved me a job, which is exceptionally nice of you as it's raining here.

...And the rain stopped neatly in time for the inestimable Mr Moog to step off the train at Barrow station.  He's just driven away in the Xantia, it's his car again.  I got to drive it from my house to the station, and back.  Total of maybe two miles.  That's got to be the shortest time I've owned a car, ever.
