So what can £100 get you? Contains DEAD BMW

After recently being short of work with the run up to Christmas i thought about how i could make myself a few quid.

naturally, I wanted to do something car related but wasn't sure if my limited budget could afford something with a reasonable profit in it but i decided to have a look anyway.

So armed with the interweb, 100 of out fine British pounds and a vague brief i started my search.

Only thing i needed to consider was something that i could either fix without spending any money or something that would generate enough profit to make it worthwhile spending on. Oh and it needed to be close by.

i have lots of consumables, a mig welder and plenty of tools so an MOT failure was looking likely.

Well actually, i was surprised with how much choice there was.

In total 6 cars were available in my budget. 2 were OMGHGF and the other 4 were MOT failures.

So what to get...

It could have got you an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Too late now though :)

Easy to buy. Easy to repair.

The difficulty is the mouthbreathing twats who want the moon on a stick for £250.

That is one thing i had considered but as i was working to a small budget, i wouldn't really loose anything and could just chalk it up as a failed experiment.

In the end, i dismissed the OMGHGF cars and went to look at one of the MOT failures.

It was an honest car that had recently had a small fortune spent on it. but the owner had moved away leaving it at her dad's place where it just stood and stood.

He took it for an MOT to sell it on but decided that it would cost too much to get sorted after it failed so just bunged it up for sale.

He is an elderly chap so would have had to pay garage prices so clearly not worth doing.

So here it is

1.1 Automatic, pretty tidy apart from being covered in mould and mildew after standing under a tree. New head gasket, New timing belt, recent new front brakes, new battery and it startes on the button and drives very well with no knocks, bangs or rattles.

All this for just £80!

This was a few weeks ago now so i have been working through the short failure sheet.

Worst parts were obvious at a glance

The only other fail was handbrake efficiency which should be pretty easy to sort.

The other thing about this car that needed attention was the paintwork.

It's very very flat and oxidized and is covered in dirty marks which won't wash off so it will get a full machine polish. all it will cost me is time as i have everything needed.

It is still wearing it's original Fiat wheel trims but they are past their best so will be rubbed down and given a fresh coat of silver to brighten them up

A couple of shots of the grot and grime this car has to offer

Anyway, fast forward 2 weeks and the weather was just too bad to get the welder out so i came up with a plan and took it into work on the trade plates to do the welding indoors out of the wind and rain.

It's the furthest i have driven the car in my ownership (43 mile round trip) and it drove without any issues.

The only thing that i didn't like is driving in the pouring rain with the window open ajar as the water just pisses down through the window and straight onto the electric window switches.

Poxy nuisance..

So after arriving safely

lets have a look at these small** holes....

Oh dear...

M3cBPfs.jpg

hmmmmmmm...

Still, no worries.

The inner sill was holey too so that was chopped out

And a new piece was let in, cleaned up and zinc primed

Then i made up a section of outer sill and welded that in

ground back and a skim of filler

Stonechipped

And satin black to finish

By no means perfect but i was short of time and hey, it's an old Punto..

I then decided to try out polishing the bonnet to see how it would come up.

Half and half comparison

Pretty pleased with that for a 2 minute exercise.

if the rest comes up as well, it will look pretty smart.

Oh and at this point, i have sold the car pending completion of repairs  :-D

I hope you stand to make muchos OMGProfit.

All i need to spend is £35 for the MOT everything else cost zilch so the car owes me £115

It has been sold for £575

Win!

But before I can pass GO and collect my wedge, I needed to finish the welding

So onto the other side

uqdLSkb.jpg

Much more solid but still in need of some welding

So i cut out the cancer with a die grinder

fXfqGX8.jpg

And plate it up.

No photo of the finished welding but i remembered to take one after stonechipping

nO7Adf5.jpg

And a splash of black to finish

LBmctBr.jpg

Just the handbrake and MOT to go.

The wheel trims are rubbed down and awaiting a splash of silver wheel and they can go back on.

Oh...and the polishing....

Excellent work - I didn't know they fitted the (Bo' Selecta) boxes to the punto, old panda's are very nippy but I suppose this is a bit heavier.

If the sale falls through I'd be interested.

I don't think it will fall through. The chap who is having it is a relative and is very keen and has the money waiting but i will bare it in mind just in case :-)

It does go pretty well to my surprise.

That's ace and being a small automatic it should do decent coin. Nice work!

This is a thread WIN 8)

Great to see some love being poured onto tue unloved.

I love how the spare tyre even has 'SPARE TYRE' name embedded into it.

Ma's K11 spare wheel had never been used from 1998 until a couple of years ago and again recently but only for a matter of days each time, still looks as new.

Cheers fellas.

And yes, it will be a lovely little car once done. Everything important has been done in the last 6 months so it should go on for a good while.

I'm pretty pleased with it really, Not my cuppa tea but it didn't have to be.

Once that paintwork is all shined up it will be a bright little thing.

I suppose that's for the people who don't think that a bright red wheel that is half the width of a normal wheel is enough to know that it should only be used in an emergency..

That is how it should be done. Nice welding and polishing. Neat little car and a goodly bit of pocket money out of it.

Awaiting the Focus thread with bated breath.

This is all excellent stuff, enjoy proper shite fixing threads. Have to say your Punto has leas green in it than my Corsa, which is used daily! 😳

Ill continue with this thread when it comes to the Focus as it falls under the same title of 'so what can £100 get you' which pleases me no end :-)

Its actually a really lovely car in nice condition. Low miles, 10 months MOT and it actually drives like a new car still.

Pictures tomorrow as it was dark by the time i collected it this evening
