I deleted my moany up-all-night-with-2-screaming-kids reply too, sorry for taking your thread off topic, it wont happen again!

Well I would like to personally apologise as I was sort of moaning and this wasn't my intention.

I do think others were trying to be helpful, in their own way, saying they didn't have the cars but could offer stuff for future issues but what I don't understand (and I know it's me) why do you only want the fast* versions? Just because it might go a bit quicker doesn't always make it the better

Sadly, magazines HAVE to cater for the masses, and the masses go la la about the performance versions. It's why you never see a 205 diesel buyers guide, only GTi. It's a frustrating business, but magazines only exist if they can make the finances work. As we've discussed on here many times, a magazine focussing on lesser stuff - like a 1-litre povo supermini five-way battle - would appeal to the folk of this forum and not a lot more.

And, as at least two of our number will attest, even that does not a market make.  This forum IS our 'magazine'.

ST200 vs Xantia V6? Come on. That needs to happen. Extra shite points if  you can get hold of a Cavalier V6 too.

I could offer a Calibra V6 for this.

Calibra V6, vs. Peugeot 406 V6 Coupé if we can find one, vs. Ford Cooo-gar V6, vs. Alfa GTV V6 (yes, okay, at that point all bets are off for most folk and the Ford is going home in shame in the minds of the reader before it's even been driven) vs... Integra for the wildcard, four-pot, probably wipes the floor with the lot of them.

Oh, okay. Vs. 825 Coupé.

Amy bought me issue 2 from martins newsagent earlier!

I do like the paper and finish of the front cover! The audo on the cover needs new rear springs and trailing arm bushes though apparently...

It would add credibility* to our Wikipedia site, though.

Just read that modern classics is based 5 mins walk from my grans! Ill park my car outside and take a picture the next time we are there! Should lower the tone a bit

I'll chuck the W124 coupe into the V6 shoot out to see how a simple straight 6 proper wheel drive with no traction control compares to the admittedly nicer sounding V's.

Sorry, I don't have any of those cars, but I might be getting one of them soon.

PS  Can we have a test between a Renault 20 and a Fiat 131.

Sorry for overreacting, chaps. It felt like I was being lumped in with cheapskate mags which don't reward readers and people who get involved. I do, and appreciate everyone who chips in, no matter how small a way they do it.

Please carry on - the thread suggestions are genius, and I promise, I'll run to a decent lunch, expenses, anything else needed, as well as give thus forum a good, solid mention.

Can't say fairer than that.

Oh Ffs!

Don't go changing the deal now........I'm up for the sausage sandwich thing........just need to get the right car to qualify......

Why don't we start doing our own tests???? As we have seen from this thread we have lots of interesting cars and people who are willing to offer them up for testing. I also believe we have both actual and aspiring photographers and Journalist types who could do the testing and photography. Add into this a band of types who could provide food and shelter in various parts of the country.

You never know the results might be picked up on by the big boys and an income stream developed but with us calling the shots and deciding on which cars are used. If not we could print some copies off and sell them for a small fee at the various shows we attend to cover costs.... along with the tests being a useful guide for peeps looking to buy the cars we test.

Thats not a bad idea, we can also PDF the tests up and maybe if we asked Daveb47 nicely he could create a 'tests' section to store them in.

I suspect this may add some credibility for the Wiki page too.

If I can find time (I'm not being uppity, time really is like gold dust at the mo for me) I'd be up for doing some writingy stuff. Only stumbling block would be insurance.

Partridge (and Keith), as you're a man in that particular trade - how do they usually handle insurance in magazine tests? Do the journalists have day cover, or do they get the owners to drive the cars and then take pics or do they ask you to sign a disclaimer and then drive the cars on business parks and private roads to get around the law?

Or does it depend who's asking?

This is for the more mundane stuff, I am vaguely aware of a particular incident where a journalist blew up a Porsche 917k (or similar) on a track and it turned out he wasn't insured (as no-one in their right mind would insure such a vehicle being put through its paces) and it all got a bit messy. What happens in a shoot-out like the one Keith originally posted insurance-wise?

Dont crash? Personally, if the zx got killed, £200 or win me a roffle...

I'd hope it wipes the floor with the rep mobiles in drag, after all it was probably twice as much new, before you added a radio.

I'll field this one, as I got here before Sam or Keith. The latter is never an option certainly as far as all the journalists I know are concerned. The journalist will usually have cover in place through the magazine - but check this out beforehand if it hasn't been confirmed. On a lot of shoots, the owner is asked to drive for the photos mainly because of manpower on the day, partly because it's nice to have the owner in the photos.

It will never offend if you ask the journalist in words of one syllable whether he or she is covered - it's your pride and joy at the end of the day, and you have every right to check before you let someone else loose in it.

How about an early A4 V6 quattro? ;)

I've given this thread a swerve until now but just to add my opinion I'd say that having your car featured in a magazine will always add to its desireability and maybe value come resale time. Having the feature on display on your dashboard at classic shows also makes a good talking point as well.

You'd think this. I approached someone earlier this year with a request to borrow a pretty rare variant of a car to use in a 50th anniversary feature. The chap said no because he couldn't see any benefit in having his car used to celebrate such a big anniversary in print when he was trying to sell it...
