Trimmer needed for CX Headlining

Recommended Posts

I have been to a Trimmers this morning to get a quote to get my CX head lining replaced, I knew it was not going to be cheap but the quote was £720 and when I tried to negotiate they knocked £20 off. I was thinking £500 tops, anybody had a head lining done lately what do they cost?

The headlining is the least of my CX worries, but I hope you have luck in your endeavour!

out of interest, do you know of any good parts suppliers for the CX?

Thought about trying it yourself? It's pretty straightforward if you work methodically and take your time.

Roof lining is DIY if difficult. The backing board will come out via the passenger front door (eventually). The cloth and glue is available from Woolies Trim.

Good to hear that the head lining board will come out of the front n-s door, the Trim shop wanted to take out the windscreen which concerns me about resealing it.

I am a bit old and fat for working upside down inside a car, I need someone to do it for me.

Wind all the windows down+open doors, recline the front seats and it'll pop out fine. Don't remove it solo though as they can be very fragile. Clean all the crap foam off the backing, use the old fabric as a template. DO NOT USE standard spray adhesive, I used some and had to repeat the process once summer hit and it and it all fell off. Think I used some spray glue used for neoprene, super 90 something or other.

Cost about £40 all in to do the one I did in a nice cream velour material

I also have a 1985 Range Rover and I ripped out the rear headlining when it sagged so badly that I could not see out of the back window.

Don’t be fooled by the D plate, it is 1985 and was exported new to Baghdad LHD, manual and came back two years latter RHD, Automatic with air-con.

i'd like to get the headliner retrimmed in the XJ6, its not a job i want to attempt myself given just how big the biscuit top is in one of those.

i did sort of research it a little sometime ago and the t'interweb suggested taking the back window out to allow the top to be lifter out.

that put me right off...

shame cos it is one of the things that let the car down.

any shitters know/recommend some one who mat be able to do the job up north (teesside/north east) at all?

£700 is a serious lot of money to do a headlining innit, the materials can't come to more than about £50-75, but I suppose if the windscreen has to come out that adds a new and quite thick layer of bother. I got the headlining out the front door of my Volvo 760 after removing all four seats but I don't know of thats always possible.

I have been to see another trimmer local to me today, a one man operation (well and his dog) in a one car farm unit. He has quoted me well within budget and he seems OK, so I have booked the CX in for the 7th Dec. First job, we will see how it works out.

When I had my CX, the headlining had already been removed and had been replaced with what looked like a wincyette (sp?) bed-sheet. And even that was detached, revealing rust on the underside of the roof ...

Good luck withe work :-)

Mine is worse than my picture shows and has been pinned up by the last owner but not as bad as yours!

The trimmer was unable to match the colour quite so the new one is going to be a little lighter, I will post how I get on with this new trimmer when it's done. The last one still has my Peugeot that he started two years ago!

The only good thing about sunroofs in the cx is that they had a funky centre panel and vinyl roof. No droopyness, just an interior waterfall when it rained.

Funky centre panel - check

Vinyl roof - not check

Internal waterfall - not check as it was rebuilt by previous owner

Sagging headlining - not check

Verdict - WIN!
