Opinion on a dealer - FAO Middlesboro Shiters

You'd be better whacking the seat on Gumtree or ebay. I know it = hassle but it's worth a punt before trading in.

The mileage irregularly and report of one being bodged together with chemical metal would set alarm bells ringing. A £250 shitter is one thing, over a grand is something else.

Id be put off by the less than professional reply. But he might just be fed up of dealing with bell ends day in day out if he deals in cars at the cheaper end of the market.

Id still be put off by that reply in response to your original message to him.

If someone's a bell end, don't reply.

I don't see the point in taking the time out of your day to formulate a reply, only to be evasive, sarcastic and mildly insulting.

Especially if you want money out of someone.

Probably why I'm shit at selling good cars, and that lad makes a living selling shonky ones. He must be doing it right.

I can see both sides here. He must get sick of day in day out "you sold my daughter a car 3 months ago, we've took it for an MOT and it wants over a hundred pounds spending on it!!!"

From his point of view you haven't even gone to see the car and you are asking about warranties on a £1500 car. Despite all this trading standards stuff, I'm of the opinion that you pays your money you takes your chance, if it's a bag of shit you've done your money at that price.

On the other hand you buy a car with your eyes at that money, so I'd look round at somewhere a bit more amenable. I've dealt with these sort of outfits before, what they are basically doing is either paying near enough a few quid at auction and trying their hand at getting a grand for it in the hope you don't notice it's fucked. IOW you are paying £1500 for something he's just trailered away from the breakers. There's a world of difference between these outfits and a guy making a living selling genuine cars he's got through a connection or whatever. A good sign is the forecourt they are selling it from or the level of prep it's had.

Spot on. We complain at dealing with one idiot, this chap is selling cheap cars to people who more than likely go all Dominic Littlewood when it needs a bulb or a set of wiper blades and come back whingeing that they have bought a lemon.

There must be hardly any money in buying and selling old cars. It's something I could'nt do - patience tested to breaking point.

On the other hand, he looks to me like the sort of chap who sells overpriced bangers from the side of the road with no comeback at all - the only showroom he has is on eBay. I know a lot of them, none of them want to buy at the going rate or spend a penny on the cars they sell, while asking top price and claiming "just run in" on a 130,000 mile car and "Dealer serviced" when it means "falied six tests in seven years, only got what it needed to pass".

I could be wrong, maybe he's a top bloke plauged by idiots, but then again I'm not buying a car from him either.

Do not buy one of these with the petrol engine, they are VERY thirsty! D5 is the best option......

Beg to differ on that one pal, my V70 2.4 petrol was the most economical car I've had in that engine size bracket ...

Blimey, what were you running before, something powered by a Rolls Merlin? A very good friend of mine bought a V70 2.4 petrol after driving my S60 D5 and didn't even keep it 6 months due to the dreadful fuel consumption, he wishes he'd gone D5 to start with!......

Mine gets around 60 miles to £20. The most I've managed is 30mpg (calculated fill to fill)

They are great cars, easy to work on and parts are surprisingly reasonable. Most comfortable seats ever and fantastic stereo.

The extra seats are child only, there's a weight limit on them (plus they are tiny)

They eat front tyres and the 140bhp isnt the quickest. Still it does weigh a ton.

Also - worst turning circle I've ever had in a car

Posted

Ps that's "weigh a ton" as in it weighs a LOT. It weighs almost two actual tons I think? Maybe one and a half

The turning circle is very poor on these cars, perhaps Volvo should have carried on with rear wheel drive! It's the only thing I don't like with my S60 D5, good performance and frugal and very well made car though.....

The cost of running the petrol though would pale to insignificance though surely when the injectors decide to retire on the D5?

I ran it side by side with the Omega I had at the time. Both cost around £80 to fill up (2012)

Omega 2.5 V6 Auto - between 300-320 miles/tank

Volvo V70 2.4 Manual - 440 miles/tank

Both used for regular motorway use (swapped between the two).

I bought an E39 528i manual a little later that year as well which I also ran alongside the Volvo, that returned slightly better than the Omega at 350 miles/tank, but the Volvo was still the most frugal.
