A philosophical question about headlights...

Recommended Posts

In the Good Old DaysTM  (even outside the US, where it was THE LAW) most cars used round or rectangular headlights of standard sizes, rather than the stylised multiple units which are now the norm.

Apart from the ADO15 Mini - too easy! - what was the last car to do so?

Are we talking UK market, in which case the Mini must be a contender, or does the Defender have proper headlamps still?  Other than that - Hindustan Ambassador?

Well, the last of the SW20 MR2s is a good candidate (ignoring Defender here for same reasons as Mini), likewise the Mk 1 MX5's pop-ups. I think the first projector lights were used in the Sera - launched 1989 - but maybe some of the kitcars carried on with sealed beams even after projectors became common?

I think the MK1 MX-5 must be the last mass-production car that fits in with the criteria that wasn't made for 40+ years. MK2 Golf, 1992.

Are these sealed beam or just circular? This is a 2015 model.

[Jeep Wrangler]

Wranglers came with sealed beam headlights until 2007, apparently!

This is the only vehicle worldwide that is currently available with headlights you can buy replacements of at your local grocery store at midnight for $4.99,

if you live in America:

And it's very likely the last one.

I don't know which non American car was/is the last one available with sealed beam equivalents, but also tend to believe it's the Defender.

I get to February 1996 ( range rover classic ) and 1997ish ( assuming an LTI fairway driver is considered a car rather than commercial vehicle)

Every time this "what was the last car to use" thread comes up I say Land Rover Defender.

I'm then shot down and told its not a car so doesn't count.

I expect those Jeeps will be chucked out as well...

Ok here's one you can answer. What car built in Solihull, has aluminium construction on a separate chassis and was killed off because of stupid EU rules?

it had been developed to a point where it was much worse than when it was introduced 30 years ago.

The Beijing BJ2020 - in production (in various "marks") from 1965 to the present day. Those look suspiciously like "proper" headlights.

The Jaguar XJ40 was available with 5.25" sealed beam headlights, but only up to 1994 of course. I imagine the facelift XJS probably was available with them further into the 1990s. Neither car is particularly recent though.

My Brooklands has twin 7 inch sealed beams (well, halogens) and it's a 98. Do I win anything?
