Mr_Bo11ox Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I quite fancy a cheap 2.0 petrol one of these when I get back from my travels.
purplebargeken Posted October 20, 2015 Author Posted October 20, 2015 Oh really? Step this way Sir........
DeeJay Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I've some gaffer tape for the bumpers, (pre-emptive strike).
auldford Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Nice looking motor there, I used to own the 2 litre TDCI. Nice comfy barge for doing an 80 mile round trip to work. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Craig the Princess Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Drives nicely, didn't notice the thermostat problem the temperature gauge it sat at just under half all the way. Handbrake not working so a bit of heel and toe needed for starting on slopes. There is a slight clonk from the rear suspension which I only noticed on the dreadful fen roads. Nice wafty car, not that quick but goes along ok. Very good seats even after 4 hours. I did slightly prefer the Vectra C but there isn't a lot in it. Jim Bell 1
omegod Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 I'd mentioned in the original sale thread i'm breaking one of these in TDCI flavour, you'd have been welcome to grab the rear bearing off it on your way home. Give me a shout if any bit's are needed purplebargeken 1
sierraman Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 The clonk likely the drop links or the subframe bushes.
Bren Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 If it is the subframe bushes get polyurethane items - the standard ones are like Basset's liquorice.
Formula Autos Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 The exhausts on Mk3 Mondeos have a habit of gradually being tweaked by the torque of the engine on start-up (or some such - the mechanic I took mine to explained it, but I couldn't totally get what he was telling me), meaning that after a few thousand miles they hang down an extra 2 or 3 inches under the boot floor, and clang on speedbumps. Easily sorted though, as there's a mounting point for an exhaust hanger on the floor for the more complicated exhaust that the V6 engined versions use. Some generic exhaust hangers and clamps from this mounting point to the exhaust pipe supports the exhaust properly and stops it gradually twisting its way to the ground. Ford could have probably done this for about a quid when building the car, but chose not to. purplebargeken 1
Jim Bell Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Ha ha, I think that's the first One Man And His Dog collections I've seen. Very well played.
sierraman Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 At the back of the exhaust there's little movement in relation to the engine. The flex takes most of this up, so that's usually the weak point. The bracket on the manifold cracks as well. If the exhaust hung down 3 inch it would be near enough on the floor.
Magnificent Rustbucket Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 I like the Mondeo, it seems to be a good car and I have always been impressed with them when I have travelled in one. They are a bit characterless and Germanic, but seem to be capable things. If the oil control rings do gum up, is there any way of clearing them without major work?
sierraman Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Not really, there's various things on the market that claim to buy id take it with a pinch of salt. Once the rings have gone it's either another engine or accept chucking oil in it. You can see if it has though with the smoke. For some reason the 1.8 is more prone to this.
r.welfare Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Did Mazda have anything to do with the petrol lumps in this generation of Mondeo? Buggered piston rings are their hallmark.
sierraman Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 I believe so, same engine is fitted to the 6. If you change the oil fairly regularly you should have no problems at all. purplebargeken 1
purplebargeken Posted November 6, 2015 Author Posted November 6, 2015 I could have sworn that I'd started a project thread on the Mondy but I'll be buggered if I can find it. Weird. Anyways. I have the sell it itch out of my system now. The Mondy is responding well to the claying and polishing malarky and looks rather cool in whatever colour it is. Does anyone know? I've made a start cleaning the seats and other bits of trim. The CD player is still waiting to be fitted as I need to get a different set of 'keys'. One tyre (rear O/S) has a slow puncture so I will have to keep an eye on that for now until a replacement is budgeted for. Anyone know the size out of curiosity? I will get some better centre caps later on. The new steering wheel cover has arrived and I will sort that out over the next few weeks. I will need my glasses for that! Passenger side replacement door mirror has arrived. I have popped off the colour coded cover ready for swapping over for mine. It is just 3 fixings and a connector. The actual glass in the original mirror has been broken a couple of times, so I thought that I might as well do the whole thing. I will take the dealer sticker off the rear screen as it just looks horrible. The number plates will also be replaced as they look miserable and horrible. New set on their way Autoshite sticker will be fitted. I will also replace the gear lever gaiter at some point as it is worn. Anyone recommend a particular brand of oil for the Mondy? Just waiting for the caliper winding tool set to arrive and then the car can be brought over to my mates place for further examination. Craig the Princess and michael t 2
Bren Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 I used 5/30 semi synth in mine. Clonking from the back? That'll be the subfrme bushes sir.
Eddie Honda Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 One tyre (rear O/S) has a slow puncture so I will have to keep an eye on that for now until a replacement is budgeted for. Anyone know the size out of curiosity? Well Ken, if you look at your own photograph, the sidewall reads 205/65 ZR 16....twice purplebargeken 1
sierraman Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 I thought 205 55 16... Oil, any should do providing it's the right spec. Wilkos sell 5 litres for £16. Wouldn't fuck about wasting money on Castrol or something. The spec matters much more than the brand. 5w30, should hold just over 4 litres. purplebargeken 1
greengartside Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 Colour is Oyster Silver... Craig the Princess and purplebargeken 2
purplebargeken Posted November 7, 2015 Author Posted November 7, 2015 Bloody hell folks, you have obv got mega eyesight as I couldn't see a fecking thing other than the rotation arrow and bits of welded on brake dust in the corners of the alloy. Thankz x
purplebargeken Posted November 8, 2015 Author Posted November 8, 2015 Brake caliper winding tool arrived. Shame they sent one for a Vauxhall/Opel. BorniteIdentity 1
Craig the Princess Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 Is that the cube tool thing? I've got one here you can borrow.
purplebargeken Posted November 8, 2015 Author Posted November 8, 2015 No idea mate but here's the linky: Hope it works http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300467513101?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I'll keep the bugger in the boot as I appear to have no more room to keep anything else anymore. You never know when I might need to use it.
purplebargeken Posted November 11, 2015 Author Posted November 11, 2015 Proper Ford orientated tool arrived today Number plates also arrived Mondeo licking will take place next week as I am working on Saturday (arse). Craig the Princess 1
overrun Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Long nosed pliers will also wind the rear caliper pistons back. purplebargeken 1
purplebargeken Posted November 23, 2015 Author Posted November 23, 2015 Due to Oldsmobile moving I attended the barn this very morning. Bye bye Olds Mondeo said 'Hi' by just clicking upon trying to start. Why, oh why? Why? Stupid knackers here had only left the bloody rear hatch ajar. No worries, I haz jump leads, a small tickle and off she roared I sat in the car and saw that the EML had come on. Hmm, wasn't there before and wasn't on when Craig drove. Could it be linked to the battery flattening? By the by, the battery in the car looks like the smallest one in the world, almost the same size at the i10's battery. I have a couple to hand if needed but what do other folk have in their Mondy's? The drivers seat has no white stains now - thank goodness. I pumped up the rear tyre and moved the car around a bit. Does drive lovely
