How do U start a Fiat of modern weirdness? Use the other key!

A small red fiat has been left with us and I was going to move it yesterday but after four turns of the key it hadn't burst into life like I was expecting. It has some sort of auto/semiauto gear selection. Is there some sort of masonic ritual to get it going or am I being a wus because I don't want to flatten the battery and lose the radio code?

Couple of litres of 95RON.  Match.  Jobbed.

Stupid questions.

Is it in P?  Does it need the brake pedal pressing?

I have wondered about that since. Gear leaver is in forward right position whatever that means.

You need your foot on the brake pedal to start it or change gear or it just beeps at you. Sometimes it beeps at you anyway.

It's italian, it's surrendered, so kill it with lots of fire, brimstone, and a nuclear device

Advice on not starting in the manual will be: "Please contact your local Fiat dealer".

Our little Seicento has played silly buggers a couple times when we tried a cold start. Spins over just fine, but won't even cough - like someone's pulled off the king lead.

A bit of googling suggests the crank sensor is to blame - it gets grubby and wet, it's next to the crank pulley just inboard of the OSF wheel, and may be persuaded to work after a quick wipe off. I've not done owt with ours yet, coz swearing has worked, also CBA.

Is it a Dualogic thingy?

Haven't a clue. Basically it is a recent purchase and has been left in one of my barn spaces until it will be needed in January. My son and his girlfiend/fiance/mistress/live-in-lover/delete-as-applicable bought it for her to use but found that if they waited until Jan she will be up for full no-claims so will be much cheaper. At the moment she is driving our Peugeot-of-last-resort as an add-on to our insurance.

I thought it would be a good idea to run the engine for a while to top the battery up as that is an unknown quantity and the seller didn't supply a radio code. Unless a previous owner has written it in the Owners Manual that Tayne mentioned, Haven't had a chance to go and get that out yet.

It has some sort of hi tech gearbox that you can use either as an automatic or as a semi auto. I haven't driven it, or even counted the number of pedals.

These are a right pig unless the battery is absolutely tip top.

Sounds just like mine was, crank crank crank but no go.

Other than swearing at it, nothing seemed to help.

BTW I don't think modern Fiats use a code like in the old days, I think unless they're transferred ve-hickle then the radio will be OK, CANBUS evilness. Mine certainly survived a few battery disconnections.

DS does this mean you have barn spaces to rent?

If so I could be very intersted, dependant on the outcome of the up coming ACA classic sale.

I have 3 of my fleet entered, mainly due to loosing my barn store.

PM me if it might be possible.

Stuart.

Its not my barn (I wish), I just rent a couple of spaces. There does seem to be a lot of gaps at the mo so I will pm you the details when I have dug them out after supper. Its mid Kent by the way.

Make sure it isn't actually in gear- try and push it back and forward in "N", it wont turn over at all if this is the issue. If it is turning over, but just not firing, then its feck all to do with the gearbox.... usual culprits here- spark, fuel, compression.

There should be a little box on the dash in front of the passenger seat.

In it you'll find a wallet containing at least two books, one of which will have the word "manual" on the front.

In that book, you'll find instructions on how to start the car.

Sadly, this appears to not be a feature on this model (which is a 55 plate Panda by the way).

I had another go today with foot on brake (only two pedals so that was easy to work out), tried gear lever in middle position, tried adding jump leads from running Safari. Nope.

When I got home MrsDS told me that I needed to put my foot on the brake and do something with the key at stage 2. Instructions from son which she swears blind she had told me before. I never listen.

Any idea what she is on about for when I try again on Monday?

Had a 2005 Panda and a 2009, the 2009 did exactly this. I hated it so I just used to hold the starter on until it started, sometimes took nearly a minute and a flattened battery for it to splutter in to life. Not the most mechanically sympathetic approach but I would have never got to work otherwise.

Is the engine management light on? The crank and cam sensors are a favourite on these, I think the crank sensor affects starting more than the cam, but the only code mine ever threw up was camshaft position sensor A. The connectors to the engine management unit coming adrift is common too.

I'd advise them to get rid TBH, even though they're about as advanced as Fred Flintstone's car they're a nightmare of unfindable misfires, not starting, jerking, ECU faults, sensor and wiring faults.

I've just looked in the handbook for my 2005 one (it was written off so I still have it) and it doesn't even mention the auto box, sorry.

It says at the front that it describes all of the models of Panda but presumably there was a separate book for the auto!

Erm, they only just bought it, and have only driven it from where it was bought to the barn. I think its a bit early to condemn it as being unreliable. Yes the engine management light is on, but so are all the others cos it aint started yet.

Thanks for checking out the manual. Shame its only a manual manual. Hopefully son has got the offending article with all the paperwork. I will pick up a solar charger tomorrow and plug that in.

I always thought not starting is the default for Fiats since the dawn of days and that the natural means of locomotion for Fiats is being pushed.

At least going by the amount of pushage I did to many Fiats when I was still young. Not one of them was mine, mind.

Apparently the key with the remote locking buttons has a fucked chip and wont start the car, using the other key starts the engine immediately.

Only found this out after about twenty mins of cranking using jump leads from another car and half a tin of Easystart. Hohum

Thanks for all the great ideas though.

Ours had another episode this week, out all morning no bother, jumped in after lunch, spinning over fine, no sign of a cough. Six hours later, sparked up first go. Bloody thing.

New crank sensor now ordered.

I stuck it on the ramps, wiped the damp crap off the sensor, wire-wheeled off the crusty crank pulley teeth and sprayed some WD about, so hopefully it behaves for now and the new sensor cures it.

Yeah, never had that problem with the DS. Who in their right mind puts a chip in a key which defeats its reason for being?
