Problem solved or more needless complication?

Will we be able to do our own dodgy refills - like with printer ink cartridges?

Posted

I had a call at work from ijt on Friday trying to sell me toner. I told them it would be cheaper to run the printers on champagne.

Does this mean you'll have to buy a three-sectioned refill (at a cost of £££unlubedbumrape) to change the still-fine engine and gearbox oil, because the oil in the dashpot* has run out?

It does mean that instead of stocking a dozen different oils, Euro and Halfords will need hundreds of different "cartridges".

F'rexample, 5W40 fully synth has ratings for BMW, VW, Ford etc etc on the back. Even Ferarri. Same bottle will do loads of cars. Will an oil cartridge for a BMW 320D fit a Mondeo or a LaFerrari? Probably not.

I calculate that I can save up to 15 minutes a year by using the system. Now, how to use that time? Well I could boil myself an egg every ten weeks,  or listen to an episode of the Archers. Definitely worth looking at :)

Would be another part for Ecp to get wrong but you wouldn't know until you opened it / tried to fit it and they wouldn't give you your money back .

It'll go the same way as;

Sealed engines

Limited access bonnets

Leg protectors on motorcycles

It'll never happen.

Could you get a COSS for leaky/high consumption engines?

Did you really have to remind me of that clown Dr Brian (Chin(n)?)

Dry sump, but where you swap the whole tank? Really ain't gonna happen, logistics for return/refill of cartridges is a nightmare compared to big drums of new oil and waste oil. Plus I'm pretty sure there's a good reason why most production cars aren't dry sumped - only one that springs to mind is the Previa.

Anyone who has ever attempted to fit an aftermarket spin-on filter conversion to an old engine will, I can assure Castrol, laugh like a wounded, hysterical hyena at anything that suggests bolting a cartridge full of oil to their car.

Jesus, we're still avoiding dipstick-less cars like the plague, can't see anyone here buying into such a device.

RichardK, whats the story on Previas and dry sumps please? i've long been a fan of the Previa despite the engine on its side syndrome.

We'll all be dead & buried long before anything like this reaches our automotive demographic.

If it ever does, for all the reasons given above.
