Subaru pick-up - who has one?

Today, I have mostly been enjoying a spin in this.

But I'm finding it really difficult to find out much about them. Wasn't there someone on here who restored one?

Always fancied one if those!

There's one in a scrapyard in Leominster that is way too good to be in there but they have lifted it by the roof. Such a shame

How's the bonnet badge? My mate is looking for a replacement as the original has cracked.

Pete Andrews, near Gloucester, is your man for these.

Sorry, don't know his alias here, but he's a multi forum frequenter!

The thing I like most about them is it tells you in the handbook how to lower and raise the torsion bar suspension.

Joey Spud has one I believe. Think I saw it on the breakdown drivers thread.

No idea, I didn't look too closely at it. They have 2 in stock I think though. P T Moore is the place. Really well stocked yard full of older cars

Heres mine, had it 2 years now. One owner 36,000 miles unrestored condition. Due to my other projects it's taken a back seat but i've now sourced all the panels I need (2 new steel wings and lower valance) When my Anglia and Marina are finsihed i'll be making a start on it.

The one in my avatar is my 1/10th scale Tamiya version !!!!

Plan is a mild restore, I have a replacment seat, paint the sides and full service. Was an MOT'd runner when bought and underneath is pretty good.

America (and presumably Japan) got a T-top version. And I think a Turbo version. And models with air suspension.

I had one years ago and wanted to transplant the turbo motor from a 1.8L (Loyale) but the turbo blew a gasket and the MV was rotten, so it didn't happen.

One of my customers has one . Looks tidy enough but off the road and outside for a few years

I've got an Australian book on Subarus somewhere. Interesting reading, there was a chap used to clock up 100,000 miles a year in one and all it needed after 3 years apart from minor servicing was a driveshaft. That included alot of miles on dirt roads too.

Here's my question though. My Impreza and Legacy had permo 4x4 with a low ratio gearbox, but I think this MV has front-wheel drive with selectable rear-wheel drive instead. So, does that mean it does without the low box? Not that it was much of a low box anyway. Just made them sound like rally cars.

I have one as well.

Been pissing about today trying to fit seats from a 2004 Impreza in to it.

Been a good little truck, its one of those vehicles that seems to have a happy demeanor and enjoys being out and about a bit like an excitable puppy.

www.mvbrumbybrat.co.uk is the dedicated forum for these a guy on there called Giles (scoobydo) has remade and stocks wings, valances and tailgate skins in fibre glass for them.

Dollywobbler they are indeed front wheel drive and selectable four wheel but with hi and low range.

I dont think i have ever needed to use the low range living in Kent.

Thanks. Maybe I'll try and have another play later in the week. Is there a centre diff? I'm guessing not if it's part time.

Posted

No they don't have a centre diff.

Weirdly the hand brake works on the front discs and with a couple of spanners you can raise / lower the suspension about an inch (torsion bar rear and mc struts on the front).

Engine is an ea81 (1781cc) all alloy flat four with push rods and gear driven cam shaft, very simple tough engine giving around 80bhp and was a popular fitment in light air craft back in the day.

Wheel stud spacing is an odd 4x140 the same as a Pug 505,but 6x140 wheels off most jap 4x4 stuff can be used if you redrill the hubs or wheels.

Simple service parts are still easy to get from independent parts places and Rockauto in the US list a lot of stuff for them and it takes around 8 days to arrive. But if you order from them try and get all the parts from the same warehouse to keep the shipping costs down.

The only let down is its only a four speed so on the motorway its a bit thrashy but its happy enough at 60/65mph.

Early legacy and impreza running gear can be used to upgrade if thats your thing.

This is worth a watch too (80's aussie Subaru guy hooning about and a 4x4 Tercel comparision) . https://youtu.be/ReiOmtL45hU?list=PL797429434C21F3F9

Low range is wonderful for towing. When I collected a Ginetta I used my Legacy 2.2GX and a borrowed six-wheel trailer. Drove back from Kilmarnock without issues, pulling away with no slip using the low-range box. Couldn't do that now, damn towing laws.

They don't need a centre diff ( lock) because being selectable 4wd it doesn't need it . The front and rear are locked together anyway

I have two of those kits, guess I could part with one.

Pete Andrews is scoobypete on here btw

There's one on RR that I have my eyes on, it still hasn't sold yet.

They all seem to be battered and ex-farm vehicles.

There is another project one on RR which looks fantastic:

"No pun intended"

I used to deliver/transport brand new ones of these for the first ever importer based in Canterbury.Kent. Probably have some brochures somewhere in the loft!

This is the north Kent version of the US spec jump seats.

Subaru fitted the seats in the rear bed for the US market to avoid excessive import duty on japanesse trucks the yanks were imposing back in the early 80's.

With the seats they were classed as non commercial.
