Great motor. Reminds me how much I miss my XJ40 & that I need another XJ.

there's always the possibility that Cliff Thorburn was a previous owner or whatever.

LOL!  I'd love it if a snooker ace had owned this, I deffo could see the likes of Willie 'Mr Maximum' Thorne wafting around in it.

Private plate was RWM 5, the initials of a bloke who owned it in Ramsgate, and it got transferred on to a Merc.

Teaching granny and all that but have you tried pulling a plug and resting it on the block to test for a spark?  Do the plugs smell of petrol?  Guessing it's a spark issue if the easy-start doesn't produce a result, rotor arm and dizzy cap OK?

And there, ladies and gentlemen, ends the majority of my engine diagnostics knowledge.

That's my next thing Phil, didn't have my tools with me at the time as was at the other lock-up.

Despite the initial enthusiasm it’s time to move this on, as it needs someone with deeper pockets/bigger balls than me to do the necessary fixages.  I’ll put it on Car and Classic this week but just in case the masochists amongst you fancy a project….

Key points are:

-MoT expired end of April.  Last year it had two advisories on ball joint dust covers damaged, but not sure how it managed to pass with low brake efficiency (see below).

-Exhaust downpipe and middle section to be replaced, parts supplied as I bought mild steel replacements a few months back.  The rear silencers are fine and still have the Jaguar genuine parts stickers on them.

-AED needs replacing or a manual choke conversion.  It’s currently blanked off rather crudely with a bolt in the feed pipe.  The car runs rich so will benefit from a tune up.

-Front windscreen rubber is shite so the carpets were sopping wet when I bought it.  I took the carpets out, dried them and the floors, but there’s surface rust there.  The floors were replaced in the 90s as part of the resto.  A new screen rubber is supplied.

-Both rear brake calipers and front OS one are sticking.  It does stop but not as well as it should.  Typically I only discovered this driving home on collection day.  It seemed fine on the short test drive I did beforehand as I didn’t go above 40mph, but at motorway speeds my sphincter went into overdrive under heavy braking.  New rear discs and front/rear pads supplied.

-Timing chain probably needs adjustment as engine is a bit tappy.  Hopefully isn’t anything more sinister.

-Various oil leaks.

-Temperature gauge sits at the quarter and there’s no signs of overheating.  Fan cuts in when it should.

-Gearbox changes up and down fine with no clonks or trouble with selecting gear.

-Oil pressure sits just below 40psi when warmed up.

-All four tyres were replaced last year.

-Only the LH fuel tank works as the RH leaked.  I bypassed the RH pump so it's now isolated.

-Roof paint is crazed but not causing rust, and the only other notable grot spots are a bit on the floor just behind the rear valence, a few spots on the base of the doors, and at the base of each front and rear screen (not severe bubbling just a bit where the paint has cracked).  Otherwise the bodywork is really good considering it’s an old Jag, but that’s due to it having lots of work done previously (including new floors and front crossmember).

-Interior is ‘patinated’ and headlining is drooping but intact.

-Plates need to be binned and replaced with the correct period type.

-Engine was changed from a 3.4 to 4.2 in the early 90s.  The V5 reflects this but mileage can't be verified.

-Tax exempt.

Shiters price is £1,500, but I’m open to reasonable offers.  I can’t see an XJ6 with no MoT and jiggered brakes being a quick seller, so I’m probably in for a wait when I put it on C&C.

Same pics as last year but with a few extras.  I'll get some more at the weekend.

Cheap as chips.

Please don't ebay it - I guarantee you will get offers around £500.

Please don't put it on retro rides - I guarantee you will get offers of a swap for a nissan primera GT with no sills.

Sorry you have to move it on.

I'm sorry too Bren. I agonised for ages but the reality is I'll never get it sorted, I'm too easily distracted buying cheap shite to save up what's needed here!

I've been watching values and I reckon it's worth it. Total basket cases seem to average out at £800.

If I could get off my arse and actually MOT the GT6 and get it up for sale I would hit this. Sadly, the truth is the Triumph is likely to languish in the garage for another summer but if this takes as long to sell as you think it might, I may get a chance.

NGLWTS as I hope it hangs around long enough for me to get my grubby mits on it. ;)

Sold. To a serial shiter with lots of cars, which I'm very happy about as it'll be in the right hands to get the attention it deserves.

I'm feeling a combined sense of relief that I got an easy sale, but also regret that I couldn't justify getting the various jobs sorted. She really is a lovely old thing.

Oh well, lesson learnt!

That is a strong accusation "serial shiter" until last night I had gone almost 7 weeks without buying a car!

I can think of a transit beavertail owning shiter that would fit the description.

I had early discussions with Rob about buying it but it's just at the wrong time for me with other things going on including the house move. Glad to see it is staying on the forum though ðŸ‘

I decided that I had more than enough cars and when Rob said I was second in the queue it was almost a relief. But then......

yey! i'm pleased that this has gone to a good home. it certainly looks a lovely old motor and i would have loved to own this myself.

given that the X300 has both driven me mad and is trying its best to bankrupt me, another old jaguar would have been a really bad idea!

i also hope that we can look forward to updates on its progress on this forum from the new owner, and also when he gets fed up of (been made poor by it?) it then we'll get another chance to buy?

Would Trevor Jones be one of the previous owners?

You may never speak to me again once you get the MoT bill. Or even worse, ban me from attending Shitefest!

Would Trevor Jones be one of the previous owners?

Who's he? First owner was Mann Egerton in Colchester, then John Mann registered it to himself for 6 months. Six-cyl will be the 14th owner. The V888 I sent off yielded some interesting information.

Thank God for that - I had a horrible moment just then when I thought I'd bought it in my sleep or something.

Glad this is staying in the family (and hopefully we can perve over it at SF) - it's a lovely looking thing.

He's not on the list whoever he is!

I haven't started it in over a month so I'd better go and take a look this weekend. In the meantime I've got more chod to collect this afternoon.
