Wanted - any old crap car

Recommended Posts

I Work at a school for kids with learning and physical disabilities and need a new car for our motor vehicle studies. It doesn't matter what it is, it doesn't need tax or MOT but it does need to be no more than £100 delivered to B77 2HJ and it must run and drive in at least one lowish gear so we can move it around the site when needed. Other than that anything goes,

Does anybody have anything?

I dare say you'll end up getting offered something on here, but I dread to think what...

With scrap being at £40 a ton or similar I reckon there will be loads of choice ... Which reminds me  I haven't seen Cavcraft pimping his usual miserable stock lately.

Lots of spares or repairs Clio's on the bay at that sort of money - or even less.

You do a fine and worthwhile thing Tamworth, full respect to your vocation

Thanks guys, it's to replace a Ka which went with a proper bang today. It's been swirling round the plug hole for a while now but died in truly spectacular form!

I know my brother has got a punto going for £50.

It is located in Ruislip so not that close to you unless you can get someone to collect.

Got mot for a few more weeks I think.

thanks mate, it would be perfect but we don't have any transport unfortunately.

Surely we could all chip in for a Shipley collection? If you have a £100 budget and the Punto is £50, you might only need another £20 or £30 to get it picked up.

I'll PayPal a tenner for starters

Otherwise it's almost worth one of our Journos getting an article out of it - remember Edinburgh for a Monkey in Car magazine? This would be "Two ponies to the Midlands, Sutton Coldfield or bust"

I'd chip in for the Punto to get there - TBH I was staring at the A-class and wondering, but it's so complex and difficult to work on I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

What about trying to find a Puma? Simple enough, Ford bits, plentiful and cheap, but also a bit sporty and appealing to be working on. Do they get any driving experience?

Thanks guys, it's really kind. They do get driving experience but not in these cars. We also build and race electric cars in a national formula. We have had a lot of success over the years and have beaten Jaguar and Bentley apprentice teams, Cambridge Uni and Eton college in the past. They get to race in endurance races at various circuits around the country. The kids love it and some are really gifted with their hands so it's helps them later in life as well. We have an old metro that is currently being converted to have the exhausts coming through the bonnet (not my idea) and they would love something sporty. I thought about an MX5 as I know them well but with a max budget of £100 there isn't a lot of choice that aren't complete and utter rotters, the Ka was great, if a little tight to work on but died in spectacular form today so will be going to the great scrapyard in the sky. We are fairly well equipped and have an old four post lift that I raised the money to buy second hand and loads of tools that we have begged, borrowed and acquired over the years. We also have a long term project of a classic mini that we hope to get dual control on and give lessons but sadly a lot of changes have come in over the past five years that have made it a lot harder to do but we won't give up!

MX5 bodywork is actually quite complex at the back - what's killing them (aside from accident damage) is the tendency for people to patch that early-sign outer skin rot and either bodge, or simply not protect or consider the heavy inner sills. They also rot on inner rear arches quite badly too - seen some real horrors.

I'll keep an ear to the ground, because I reckon you could do worse than take on a non-supercharged four-pot Merc CLK. Parts are readily available and cheap new or secondhand (in relative terms), there's enough complexity to teach the ones who are interested about CANBus and optical data systems (D2B) - if you've got people who are very apt at problem solving and systems, diagnostics to resurrect an engine could really get them interested, particularly if they're less about to take part in the mechanical work involved in say, rebuilding an A-series.

You've also got exterior body that rusts, but underside (subframe mounts aside) isn't too bad and has bolt-on panels, complex but maintainable interior, and of course pretty coupé body, RWD (tough diff, too) and a posh badge.

I'd like to see what's ongoing. The electric vehicle side did make me think about the A-class again, a manual one with less complex equipment (and maybe less rust) would be perfect for them to build the car Mercedes should have done (I think they made a handful, but when they bought Tesla's drivetrain it ended up in the rather conventional B-class).

You can have my justy for £100 delivered

Mechanically perfect, it would be better for mig welding tutorials

I hate to see an empty trailer so could take ka away too

sounds ideal, the crustiness isnt an issue as long as it has a couple of points front and back it can be jacked on, or at least enough metal that I could put a couple of jacking plates over

I dont have anything but if your in Tamworth it HAS to be a Reliant

Yes its fine to jack up. Can do it anytime next week, day or evening fine

sounds ideal, I will have to get approval from my boss but he knows we need one so shouldn't be an issue. Would it have to be cash or would a cheque be ok? (May be cash anyway)

it would be cool but they make good money now, and they aren't so good on a four post lift!

You can have my Zafira for nothing if you want it and I'm happy to chuck £20 in towards it's transportation costs. I can't deliver but maybe someone on here can help?

that's so kind mate, whereabouts are you?
Posted

Chester, just off the M53.

Posted

Thanks for the PM, I am amazed by the kind offers on here. Massive thanks to everyone who has offered to help in whatever way.

Posted

Is the Zafira road legal? Surely Chester to B77 on twenty quids worth of juice is doable for some shiter who just fancies wasting the day driving a crap old car for the greater good.

And yes, I'm trying to work out if there's a day I can do just that.

Edit: Is B77 Tamworth? All you need is a North-Westener to drive it down, I'll give them a lift to Cannock as I pass Tamworth on the way, and they can buy something to go home in!

Edit 2: Of course it's flippin' Tamworth, otherwise that's a stupid username.

Yup B77 is Tamworth, about two minutes from A5 or ten feet if you walk!

Posted

It's 'legal' but one back brake is a bit noisy and I'd be worried about actually driving it.

Posted

I also have a Hyundai Matrix that can be had for £50, leaving the same amount for transporting. Still MOTed for a couple of days.

It's horrible but driveable.

Looks like Cavcraft has sorted us a car out for nothing. I have been genuinely amazed by all the kind offers. Massive thanks to everyone who has offered to help out.

No probs either way but if you end up having Justy its cash or bank transfer, I hate having to make a sspecial trip into the big city to go to the bank, especially with the trailer on!

thanks for the offer but thanks to AS man of the year Cavcraft we are sorted. He has managed to not only provide the car for nothing but get it over to Tamworth as well (thanks go to LankyTim as well for that). Come Wednesday the Zafira will be being tortured, sorry repaired, by a group of teenagers. Based on what they are designed to do there is a certain Karma about how it will end its life. It should do us for a good few years and will make a massive difference in the life of some kids who haven't had the best hand of cards in life. Massive thanks to everyone who has offered to help in any way.
