I bought one of these at Ely car auctions over 20 years ago, I paid 25 quid for it. I didn't have it long but it went well enough even with a split radiator.

I declare the yogurt truck well & truly totalled.

Lovely indeed but why is it on those tile things?  Just interested like.

But it's a sad reflection of modern car design (whatever that is) that cars like the Allegro can manage to look appealing in 2015. When they were new, you knew instantly it was an Allegro. No mistaking it for an Escort, Viva or Avenger. It sounded like an Allegro as well. Despite having the same engine and box, a 1300 Allegro didn't sound like a Mini. Cars were unique with their own characters.

Isn't this the oldest Allegro around or something? It's a show regular and is always at the BMC spares day whatsit. Very nice, but I can't see the point in an Allegro that's to clean to take out in the rain

There is no point, but if nobody does it there'll be no Allegros

You know its accepted wisdom that Allegros were ugly....but honestly, put next to an Audi A1, or a BMW 1 series, or a new Focus, or a...or a...or a... and it looks great, no argument. Sure its not a SD1 or a Ferrari 308, but its not bad, and this SS looks great. I think people must be brainwashed into thinking  some of the shit around now is so wonderful....most of the stuff around now looks like it was squeezed out of a dogs arse! Its utter, ugly crap!!! (goes away, foaming at the mouth and waving finger at nobody in particular)

Nah there are loads of Allegro left. I reckon they have survived better than a lot of '70s porridge, they are actually pretty rot resistant and not badly screwed together really. I'm glad this one exists, but I don't really 'get' cars that are too shiny to do anything other than sit in a show field a few times each summer. I bet he never uses this to go to asda to get some beers in or whatever.

I might be mistaken but I thought this was older than its reg and was a preproduction car that got registered later. I might be thinking of another one though.

As you get older things like this make you think  how life was a tad easier for you A - Mainly because you was a kid on a 2nd hand Chopper wearing flairs, B - TISWAS / Rentaghost ETC was entertainment

C = Your dad had a Humber D - we had dripping on toast and Bubble N Squeak of a Monday tea time

Only going backwards and then the rear screen would pop out.

I bought an All aggro SS badge from an autojumble bin for a £1 a few years back, I was well chuffed!

I couldn't agree more: cars should be driven as intended, perhaps even to exceed original intentions. But one day Allegros will be endangered, and it's only because of the likes of this one  that they won't be completely extinct for a very long time.

Seeing as they predate my birth by a fair while I couldn't say how they were received when new, but the shape styling of these things set the precedent for a good 20 years of family car design imo
