Little Green Rover

Thought I may as well get my arse in gear and start a thread now that the ex-Cavcraft Rover 214Si is now residing in North London.

JohnK and his 1 year old co-pilot kindly dropped the Rover off yesterday and then went on to collect RobT's silver Rover.

First impressions?

Well, it is a longer car than you might think, it is light and airy and almost completely beige inside. I have never had a car that is so beige. For some reason I thought it had a sunroof, but it didn't. It does have a tow bar. This means that I now have 3 cars that can tow things. The Amazon, the Olds and now the Rover. I am sorted!!! I might get a tow bar for the Dolomite and then I will have a full set.

Ok, back on track.

The interior. I think I mentioned the beigeness. No PAS (not a real problem), no 'lecky windows (novelty wind up jobbies) and no sunroof (damn).

The controls are well laid out, the radio does it's thing but I think the rear two speakers may be asleep. Or dead. I will check at some point. Front speakers happily doing the job in the meantime.

The seats are comfy and the trim in general is in nice condition. The two main issues inside the car are a knackered drivers door card armrest. This seemed rather fragile and obviously has't stood up well to those with heavy arms. A breakers in Bradford had a door card but I am not paying 50 quid. Nope.

The rear parcel shelf is a bit broken but I might look into fixing it. The headlining is doing a Saab.

That's it really. Nothing really horrible.

Engine, clutch and gearbox seem all fine and dandy.

Exterior looks quite smart in 3 door guise. Very nice indeed and it should respond well to a good mopping. Need to linseed the bumpers though.

The car reminds me of our former B (or D) reg 213S. Nice little car that was.

So, happy chappy. The insurance company phoned me up today to action a refund of 17 quid. That was a shock as they said earlier in the week that it would cover the change of vehicle admin cost. Bonus.

Just have to brave the DVLA interweb thing shortly to tax her.

I have had 3 green cars prior to this one, now I have 2 at the same time. Not too bad out of over 320 cars in my life I guess.

Piccies to follow over the next few days :)

£50 for a door card?!

I hope they could hear you laughing.....

Posted

Are you sure it's actually got rear speakers? As its an entry level 3 door , maybe you didn't get the luxury of quadraphonic sound unless you stumped up for an SLi or GSi whichever was the next rung on the ladder.

I didn't laugh long enough.

Hmm, good point. Must check.

Where has the 75 gone? Did I miss that going while I was away?

Yo Ken, I'm gonna need your address coz I have a little pressie for you for when you have that door card off. In the mean-time, take care with that driver's door if it's windy out.

About the door card arm rest collapse issue, me and Billy and John came up with a plan of action for a high quality* repair, involving a wooden splint, cling film, expanding foam, and a piece of beige leather-effect vinyl.

The three-doors have a weakness there because they lack the little screw-on support bracket that the more-door R8's enjoy.

It was raffled off!

IIRC it was in the open forum so it went over a few heads.

Yeah, yeah, yeah :)

I'll get some pictures now it has actually stopped raining.

I will have another 75 but it will be a tourer in a light colour such as moonstone green, white or so on. 2.5V6 obv and slushbox equipped. I will take my time and choose wisely (yeah right).

I've got a hankering for a V6 75.

If I had been earlier to the post we could have maybe done a deal between the two Ken - I just wasn't aware you were wanting an R8 as a replacement !

Posted

No worries mate. It all worked out in the end.

Now is the time to get a 75 though, I doubt they will get any cheaper.

Door card related.

The 5dr door card is completely different to the 3dr, as so...

Obviously on the 3dr the arm rest is a lot longer and that appears to be where the weak spot is.

The blue J reg one I sold to Tam was exactly the same, so finding one that is undamaged might be tricky. Particularly as both were low mileage (blue one had 52k, yours has 57k).

Like Joe said on the previous page, alternative solution/Bodges have been extensively discussed particularly in relation to this car, in case you can't find a good one or want a solution whilst you continue to search.

Joe - would you be able to whip a check strap from my to be claimed white scrapper in the post to Ken? I did warn him about the door before I left on Sunday but looking at how tight the road where he lives is and I don't want him being liable for damaging some clowns motor!

Posted

Joe has mentioned the check strap :)

My foot is a good temp solution though.

Right, piccies:

Are the cabriolet doors the same size as the 3dr? If so there is a breaker in Bootle on eBay who has one - Item Number 201424709704

Or there is Item Number 111768093785 or how about Coupe doors Item Number 360933596207

Posted

They might be but not sure if the design is the same.

Oops. I wondered where the McD's bag went, that was actually the food me and the better half ate on the way to Chumley. Sorry mate, I'm not a scruff honest!

What about the two chip trays then eh? Eh?

I don't know, buying Rovers on AS ain't what it used to be ;)
