Midlands Mustang - ZT260's. Cars I didn't buy plus one I did

Soarers are 99% autos.  I had a CL500, which ticked that box.

I'm pretty sure the 350Z will be brilliant and from what I've read not that much really goes wrong with them but I'd really like a 260 IF I can find one.

I like these but not enough to spunk £7k on one.

I could get a supercharged jag or V8 engined Audi for that money.

Posted

If I can't get one for around 4 it'll not happen there's no way I'd pay 7 grand for one.

I've had a supercharged jag and a v8 Audi and they were both good in there own way (as was the CL500) but I've never had a really a fast car with a manual gearbox. Most performance* stuff I've picked are leggy luxobarges as they're such good value for £.

That does look a lot of car for the money, wonder if he'd do a swap for a Suzuki Alto?

How the fuck would I even get to felixstowe? Would I be better flying to Amshterdam and get the ferry back?

Posted

That has rather a lot of low speed impact damage, suggesting the owner cannot bloody drive, and it does have a fair few other things borked on it. Priced very cheap as it probably needs a few grand spending on repairs, with many of the parts being made from solid gold unobtanium

I know approximately zero about these, I didn't even know some were 75's and some were MGs until about 1 minute ago. Very sought after models though...

Try the 75 forum, you MIGHT get one come up on there.

Get to Stansted airport and I'll collect you and give you a lift to Felixstowe?

Thought these were all MG's, didn't realise they did Rover badged ones as well!!

Fark me, that is cheap.

Cort, have you bought it yet?

Why does this sort of thing always come up when I'm skint?  I'm almost tempted to make an exception to my "never borrow money to buy a car" maxim.

Sounds a good price even if it needs mostly cosmetic work. Provided there's nothing serious under the skin that hasn't been mentioned. Bonus points for Badermatic - the only way to go with a V8 in my opinion. 100 million Americans buying V8 Badermatics can't be wrong !

WTF has happened to those wheels? Looks like they've been rattle canned with primer.

Same has happened on mine. I guess if tfr is used or some wheel acid to wash them. Mine are worse  getting a refurb soon.

Wow, kind offer Trigger thanks.

My problem is I really don't want one with an autobox. I've had so many big barges with autoboxes and tbh they're rubbish if you want to go around corners.

If I bought this I'd just be doing what I always do and jump in because it's cheap or seems like a good idea at the time.

Wow... That is surprisingly cheap. I don't often say this but 'if only it were closer' (I'm one week into a four week trip to Southeastern Turkey with work). I'm sure £X00 to a bump repair man would get it looking as good as the £15k one on Autotrader at the moment.

Not that a 350Z would be much better!

I wonder if the bottom part of the grille can be blanked off without causing a cooling issue. (I think it spoils the look and makes it look like an Audi) WBAC have offered £2750 for my Alto (ok they haven't seen it yet, so make that £2500). Having just bought a sensible Land Rover, for everyday use and transporting the dogs, instead of sticking the money in the bank would it be too stupid to consider buying another car just because it looks comfy and makes a nice noise.

The road tax is £290 per year.  Is that what you're saying?

£505 a year. Sorry in retrospect that post made no sense .

I agree with the grill it looks like my grandpas fire guard. The zt 260 just looks like any other zt, which I like.

The cut-off for the starting point for the scandalous road tax is the 23rd March 2006.  Prior to that the maximum charge is £290.  We should not be putting people off buying this fine car.

And I love that grille.

WARNING! Contains modern toss

Here's a boring update on some cars I didn't buy and one I did.

I've been nosing around for a ZT260 and they're all about 7 grand. I'm not paying that for one but this came up not too far away from home with an opening bid of 500 quid above my maximum budget.

It didn't sell and I was hoping it was going to be re-listed at a lower price but it never happened. Since then I've not had a sniff of one.

I also bid on this Fairlady that was a Japan car but in pretty much UK spec. I stopped bidding a price as if I'm getting one I'd prefer a UK spec GT. This one went to just under 4 grand, which was probably a good price. It was also local.

Just because they kind of fit my criteria I've been looking Z4's. My experience of this generation of BMW's hasn't been great plus if I was going to do it I'd want a 3 litre one, which seem just out of my price range.

Part of my criteria for this car I'm buying is if in the unlikely event I happened to hold onto it for 10 years I'd still think it was interesting after that time. I'm not sure the Z4 really ticks this box. Also I'm too old and fat for a floppy top so would have to drive around with the roof up even when it's 32c outsite, which to be fair doesn't happen too often in Scotland.

Saying all that here's one in a weird colour with 3.0 in it within budget.

In lew of any ZT260's I've started looking at 156 GTA's. I really wanted a rear wheel drive car but the 166 thread has reminded me how much I liked my 166 v6 even though it was a bit manic to drive..

I think in 10 years this is still going to be an interesting car. This one is over budget but has a recent belt change and note the jacking inserts on the skirts are still there!

That's a lot of cars I didn't buy. Here's one a I did. MrC's modern Citroen C3 is going back and I don't fancy paying another finance payment for her to do 15 miles a week in it. I wanted to get something a bit bigger like a Mondeo or a Mazda 6 as the boot in the Juke isn't massive.

She freaked out about driving a bigger car so we started looking at smaller stuff and she liked an A2 I found on ebay. We got outbid on the ebay one plus it was a 1.6 FSI sport with bigger wheels and all that. We don't need that shit. A week later a 1.4 SE appeared on gumtree.

It had a recent timing belt and service. It looked very clean although it has golf wheels on it (the weird shiny original ones are in the boot and badly corroded).

We paid 950 quid for it, which I think is pretty good. The only thing obviously wrong so far is the EML is on. It runs fine but does smell a bit rich. The previous owner recons it's an o2 sensor and I can't see any reason why that wouldn't be true although no doubt there'll be some complication when we come to change it.

I drove it back and it feels quite nippy. Not fast but you can tell it's light, It feels weird in the corners as there's just no weight in there, which means they can suffer a bit in cross winds. No doubt we'll find out.

The interior is smart and very modern but there's nothing too special in there, which reflects the interesting construction of the car.. It's all standard stuff you'd find in an A3 or A4 from what I can see although it does feel well put together.

I guess they spluffed all the budget building the car?

The guy told me he was selling it as he couldn't fit his 3 kids in it and needed to sell it to buy a bigger car to fit them in. When I went to pick it up it's replacement was already there and it was blue A2 1.6 FSi Sport. I'm not sure if that's a bad sign.

We had it for about an hour and Mrs C has a massive freak out when she went to put the pram in the boot and it wouldn't fit. When I looked at it I did think the boot looked bigger when I went to see it until I realised he'd put the false floor back in. Panic over it fits fine.

If she doesn't like it I doubt we'll have much bother selling it and I'll just buy a focus or something.
