Especially since they demolished a multi story car park with an empty restaurant on top.

The really good ideas never catch on for some odd reason.

Btw, there seems to be a Datsun Cedric estate sneaking into the last of the tall ship pics.

Just spent a couple of hours looking through this thread while listening to music.

Many thanks to all posters, very entertaining.

There was a time in the mid 80's I seemed to spend half my time as Coach Driver in N newcastle or surrounding area.

So a lot of what was redeveloped I knew.

Some lovely terrible old snaps from around South Shields shamelessly stolen from the world wide interwebs.

^ Pic posted by Jim Bell² earlier today with the 83-ish Sierra and the 1961-ish Consul Mk2 is a cracker.

The Consul is only about 22 years older (like comparing a 1996 car with something new today, and a 1996 car is still quite a new car in my mind), yet look at the massive difference in styling.

Multiply those 1975 car-ad prices by about 8 for 'current 1975' price.

Nice to see these... Some of my family on the Jackson side are from South Shields.

For the train fans.

Don't see that many in the station any more.

Those 'Tyneside flats in the 80s' pics are taking me right back to my happy three years as a student at Geordie Poly (majoring in amateur gynaecology and the contemporary products of the Federation Brewery, with a minor in Business & Economics...)

This thread brings back happy memories of growing up in the frozen North during the eighties and nineties :)

My folks bought me a bike from there - a five speed racer - I had to take it back for him to fit the dynamo lights that my dad had had a go at and not done very well :)

Crikey I completely forgot about those yellow pvc Benson and Hedges 'awnings' that seemed to be above most paper shops in the 80's and 90's.

Just new to this , but , the reason why I joined was principally after reading this thread. Made me very homesick and brought back so many memories of my old homestead and blasting around the streets of Newcastle in various mechanised child bins. Superb stuff, Jim.
