For all of you rubber fetishists......

Yesterday I spent most of my day surrounded by these:

This has been bought as a breaker but I reckon it could be saved by a maniac with a welder.

This was having manifold gasket surgery.

This is a nice and slightly 'hot' example. Ace stainless exhaust, mostly straight through.

This is a 55 Marathon awaiting some metal work. Immaculate interior though.

Ongoing carb/vacuum set up surgery.

The best is for last'ish.

Sam G's former car.

Yum! There are a couple of paint imperfections which will get sorted. The colour just suits the car so well.

He is planning on fitting a supercharger:

This was sold to a nice chap from Bristol. He is planning to fully restore it. It has a lovely red interior and the seats are piped in white, so I was trying to convince him to respray it in white. I may have won.

These look like cracking little things, I'd like to have a go in one someday as I've never driven a rubber band driven car.

Well if you are ever in Essex on a Sunday.................

They are ace cars to drive, just press the go and stop pedals (which are a bit offset to the left). Each model feels slightly different. I prefer the 44 and 33 in that order.

The chap who bought the GoGo told me that a young lad in his road bought my old blue 33 and is fixing it up. He is training to be an engineer :)

Brilliant. Annoys me that I didn't buy one when they were stupid cheap. A 44 would be my choice.

Cheers PBK, I may take you up on that kind offer one day, although I do have a major issue with offset pedals.

Left foot braking is the way to go.

Surely someone fancies a Daf project ;)

That 66 is a great looking car, a giffer down the road from me when I was kid had a drive of win with a 66 and a Dolly 1850 HL both resplendant in orange.

Oooh that orange one looks nice, is it just me or does it look like a dolomite that's shrunk a bit.

Posted

When Domestic Management was even smaller than she is now, the monster-in-law worked her way through a full series of these in increments of 11.

I queued with the orange 66 going towards the dartford tunnel recently.

It was getting a lot of confused looks off fellow motorists

My dad had a p reg 46 when I was a kid and it was a noisey thing at speed and I loved the way the speedo cable was driven by the grease cap on the front wheel bearing.

And i am fairly sure it only had a one drive belt system.

Any way it died when unknown to my dad the fuel pump diaphagm had been leaking and slowly diluting the engine oil which saw off the crank and its bearings on a run to Dorking on the newly opened M25.

Excellent!

This is how I remember Dafs, in Rallycross on BBC Saturday afternoons.

I had a 33 van, now I've got an A35 van. The Daf was novel, but because I can still just about manage to change gear the A35 is much more fun.

Am I right in thinking one of the early Volvo 340 was rubber band tactic?

Posted

That orange Volvo is perfect!

What is that last orange little thing?

I think it's a Goggomobile, but happy to be corrected by someone who knows what they're talking about

Posted

I like the Volvo 66 whith it's Vario Volvomatic box, or whatever it was called.

Posted

I think the 340 was designed for rubber- there is a big space under there even with a rear mounted gearbox and fuel tank behind the rear axle is more Pinto than Volvo.

You had a 33 van!!!!!!!! There are about 3 or 4 left now in the UK. My mate has one. It is ace and will be restored as soon as.

The 46 has only one belt, at least with two you stand a chance of getting home.

Variomatic :)

I should be getting a 44 in a couple of month. I know. I know!

Posted

Do you what after all these years I was never sure about the single belt,i will sleep well tonight thankyou sir.

When I first started the breakdown patrol lark there were still a few belted 340's running about and I do recall chopping a flapping belt from one and following it to their home no bother at all.

My old Dad bought a bright red S reg 66 in 1980, so that picture brings back so many memories. I remember the seats being super comfortable. Unfortunately I wrote it off 2 months after he bought it in an incident that may or may not have involved me trying to impress a young lady......

Posted

Oh no!

The seats in the B bodied Dafs are very comfy indeed. More so than a great deal of other cars :)

Not that I know of :)

They are pretty handy things. If I hear of one shall I PM you?
