Twiggy Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Has this happened in the U.K ? https://uk.news.yahoo.com/ten-automakers-sued-over-keyless-ignitions-143324150--finance.html#LVu4CqC
michael1703 Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 So they are suing because when they take the key out of their car it keeps running? Why can't they press the stop button? groovylee, RayMK, alf892 and 2 others 5
Dippy Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 So some new car owners cant be arsed to turn off the engine before leaving the car, we need to get back to the old days when you had to interact with a car to make it run. Angrydicky and stuboy 2
alf892 Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Haven't seen anything............maybe we are less stupid? So if you don't switch your car off it may keep running and kill you in a confined space? Who'd think it? Even if you were that daft surely stuff with keyless will also have stop start?......unless switched off. I once left the handbrake off and my car nearly ran me over. I thought this was because I was stupid but now I realise it was the manufacturer's fault. gordonbennet, HillmanImp, groovylee and 7 others 10
Formula Autos Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 So lazy bastards are just walking away from their cars and expecting them to switch off by themselves? Natural selection if they end up gassed, then. I've got a stop/start button on my modern and never find it any hardship to press a button and knock the engine off. brownnova, alf892, strangeangel and 5 others 8
fordperv Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Who would have thought that fumes from a running car can kill you, fucking idiots SOUL and strangeangel 2
rainagain Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 I left a some food cooking on the stove, now my house has burnt down, who do I sue about the lack of auto switch off on the cooker? RayMK, oldcars, cobblers and 5 others 8
garbaldy Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 we need to get back to the old days when you had to interact with a car to make it run.Ah yes a good thrashing with a tree to make it go, those where the days Justin Case, tinribs and tooSavvy 3
garethj Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 It used to be against the law to leave your car unattended with the engine running, wonder if this is the case in America? Let the manufacturers get in there with a counterclaim! It wouldn't be common sense but as the only people winning are the lawyers, it'll probably happen.
mercrocker Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Yep, more proof that worthwhile automotive development ceased before the end of the last century. Same can be said for human evolution. strangeangel, Twiggy, PiperCub and 2 others 5
dave21478 Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 People that stupid shouldnt be allowed to own cars. strangeangel, stephen01, richardthestag and 3 others 6
stephen01 Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 as far as I know the Leaf will switch its self off once the key is not detected, however that's not going to kill you is it even if I left it 'running'
STUNO Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 It must be the manufacturers fault. Nobody told the new owner that they had to use the STOP button to stop the engine, they all think that if you walk away the engine will stop, as it will not start without the card so it must also stop without the card. BUT it takes quite a while to build up enough gas to get you unconscious. The unfortunate 13 must have sat beside the car in the sealed garage waiting for the car to stop for some time.
tooSavvy Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 My Dobbie Van has 'auto stop/start'... bastard thing!! Kangarooing away from the lights with the engine half-alive is NO joke. I always forget to tip the 'deactivate' switch until too late - fucksticks. KEY &Twist f.t.w. TS

cort16 Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 On a lot of cars with start stop when you stop the car and let the clutch up the engine stops. I could see (if you're thick) why you may get out the car and wander off at this point. The car will start itself back up when it detects the battery is getting low.
strangeangel Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Lethal... but only to the terminally stupid. There are times when I really, seriously despair of my fellow man and this is one of them. RayMK 1
lisbon_road Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 I was on a ferry recently. A message came out asking a passenger to return to their vehicle as the engine was running. Beggars belief as they say.

Merkins dont really "do" clutches though - in fact as far as I can make out there is a very large percentage of them who have never driven a manual and dont know how to - Auto boxes are the norm over there.I could say something crass like auto boxes free up their arm and allow them to concentrate on munching burgers and shooting things, but I wouldnt.......oops, I said it anyway. tinribs, alf892 and michael1703 3
Sloth in a bowl Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 I just downloaded a random BMW user manual and it clearly states not to leave the car running in enclosed areas due to carbon monoxide. It also clearly states to switch the car off using the stop button. Not sure what else they are expected to do other than not sell a car to people until they have signed a form saying that they have read the manual. tooSavvy 1

jonny69 Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 I ONCE FORGOT TO PRESS THE BRAKE AND ALMOST CRASHED INTO THE CAR IN FRONT. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. dollywobbler, robinmasters, richardthestag and 6 others 9
HH-R Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 I don't understand, are they just walking away, leaving the engine running? Torn between saying "dear me" at their daftness and "keyless ignition, what is point?".

anonymous user Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Pah, keyless start, keyless entry, it's been around for years. My Lotus 7, Morgans and most of the Land Rovers have been keyless entry, in fact most didn't even have external door handles or, in the case of the Lotus, doors. With my old Cambridge it was easier to stall the engine first, then search around on the floor for the fallen out ignition key to turn the ignition off. If you couldn't find the key any other key or screwdriver would do. mercrocker, Jim Bergerac, beko1987 and 4 others 7
richardthestag Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Darwinism at it best. Over here we didnt write "avoid using in close confines of a tent like structure" on disposable BBQs. nor did we add the disclaimer "especially so if your primary objective is a source or warmth rather than cooking some chicken or maybe a few porky whites." Thus we experienced a similar outcry as that in the US of A but with less £bn court action and more "daft cunt" type comments. The affected septics are obviously too stupid to drive a car let alone own one. My thoughts are with any innocent party caught up in the schenanigans etc etc PS my old Ford Anglia could be opened and started with a lolly stick. I could walk away with the keys in my pocket but the engine still running. Question is... do I sue Walls or Ford? Dave_Q, RayMK and beko1987 3

Mrs Smith said she had decided to ''go public'' as people needed to be aware of the risks of keyless cars, particularly older people inexperienced in new technology. Mazda New Zealand general manager Glenn Harris said the report of the couple being trapped in the car in that manner was an industry first. What I find incredible is that these people must have managed somehow to earn enough money in their lifetimes to able to finance a new car. During the thirteen hours they were 'trapped' did neither of them wonder what the button beside the door handle was for? If you're incapable of working out how to unlock a car door from the inside by the time you're in your sixties then how can you ever have been employable? jonny69, Lacquer Peel, michael1703 and 1 other 4
