Tell me about.....Rover 75 dirty diesels

I'm waiting till the MOT is up in September so I can try and sell the volvo with a fresh ticket for maximum coinage.

I feel there is a Rover 75 shaped box that I need to tick while they are still cheap and available.

I'd like to try a diesel one however the words 'BMW' and 'DIESEL' don't strike me with confidence.

What's the general consensus on the oil burner?

MPG's aren't great.  Clutches are as expensive as divorce.

Go for broke.  Loved mine.

Search on Google for 'autoshite rover 75'. Should give you lots of previous comments. The engine's are pretty good. Many prefer the autos to the manuals. Watch for blocked plenums. I also want to scratch this itch one day too.

Understand high milers wanting a diesel but 2.5 V6 Petrol cars are for winners, love mine!*

*Unless it goes wrong, then I won't.

these are fitted with the early version of the n47 engine-no swirl flaps to worry about!

just shitting turbos and dpf issues as far as i'm aware

They are not OBD2 compliant (except the very last year of production) and so if it goes wrong you will need to buy a diagnostic tool from me.

Nyphur that looks utterly gorgeous. I think these look ace from any angle. Far nicer than the MG ZT

Having previously owned a rover metro, 214 (r8), 414 (bubble) and then a 620 I think I'm ready to graduate to one.

But thanks chaps I'll do the Google thing :)

Also never had an auto before, are these better with?

they are good and bad, they do go wrong like the pez ones, but in different ways. the motor is M47R, the R is for rover, and the same one appears in the mark one freelander.

they come in 2 flavours 113bhp CDT and 135bhp CDTi can be remapped out to 160bhp, engine has a chain so don't need to worry about belts.

mine will do 45mpg with me driving and 50mpg with SWMBO at the wheel.

hand brakes are shit (german design) and the clutch is not great. cost me £530 for the clutch and slave, and £170 for the master cylinder what failed a week or so later. it had done 110k though so hadn't done too badly.

its nice on the motorway, its not as smooth as a pez v6 version though.

i find mine to be very comfortable and a pleasant place to it as a cruiser.

there are 2 schools of thought as too whether the later ones are best, or the earlier pre project drive ones are.

tax is £180 i think for the year, auto's are a lot, ,lot more to tax cos of the OMGCO2's,

they are heavy, 1850kg kerb weight which is the same as my XJ6 so they go through drop links and suspension bushes like mad, and good replacements can be hard to find, especially with unipart going pop.

cooling fans are shite, but good quality replacements are available.

the owners club forum is a mine of information, and worth joining. you can even join for free!!

buy and enjoy, they cannot stay this cheap for ever!!

Confused am I

something about dual mass flywheels?

they don't have the DPF filter things to go wrong, so another good thing!

All this talk of plenum drains reminded me to go out and clear mine.  The side by the ECU was like the local woods in Autumn, but the actual drain hole was clear. There is now a forest blowing around outside but my plenum drains are clear  8)

Useless many times repeated thread has unforeseen use :)

Just get one. Or a 2.5V6 auto. You need a 75 in your life. Most people do.

Shabby diseasel tractor engine is plain wrong in such a gentleman's carriage, especially one from B**. 2.5 v6 or nowt.

Here here, I will raise my cup of tea to that.

I have to say I was somewhat disappointed with the diesel one I had (113bhp tourer).  I found it rather gutless and unrefined.  2.5 V6 auto is the best bet on these - not unlike a Kia Magentis in that they are far faster on real roads than they should have any right to be.

Brother has the 190 V6 in an MGZT and it's been great apart from things like shagged rear light seals forming a mobile swimming pool in the boot, apart from that it's been faultless for the last 6 years, once he had the cambelt done.

I've been thinking if a dizzler 75 myself as a daily, with not quite getting away with this Honda.

There's a few tidy looking ones on the Bay at the moment with sensible mileages and fairly cheap. A lot seem to have had the expensive problems such as the clutch already done.

I just got one, Issues mine had were wing mirrors not working, easy fix bu cleaning the contacts. To be fixed is temp sensor, so make sure it gets up to temp ok. Boot leaks but thats a seal i think on the lights to fix to. Other that that is been great so far (touch wood!)

Had a 75 diesel tourer from 2008 till last year and now an ZT saloon. It's a great engine, pretty gutless in standard form and especially if the MAF is dodgy. My tourer was the 116 and going from an L series 45 to the 75 was a huge dissapointment power wise. Back then it was plug in tuning boxes that made a huge difference but now frowned upon and the T4 laptop guys can tranform the diesel and do a full engine check easily just by plugging in there kit.

Lots of info and help on owners sight and overall I would say for the money they are one of the comfiest cars you can buy.

Never driven an automatic so can't comment other than to say tax is expensive and mpg worse but no clutch to worry about.

My current ZT easily avhieves 50mpg but living in a rural location means suspension bushes are groaning a fair bit and probably the only real negative.

Bit off topic but do you tow a caravan with yours? Whats it like?

A guy on the 75 club sells the rear light seals. Think its a tenner all in, or something like that.

That's what had gone when my boot turned into a paddling pool.

Cheers for this, any chance you could pm me the details on how to order?

My gaffer currently has 6 75CDTis, 5 tourers, 1 saloon and a mix of manual (4) and auto (2) ranging from W through 54-plates. Lowest mileage is about 140k, highest is about 197k. His missus' 75CDTi auto is on 178k on it's original 'box though the other auto had a recon unit fitted. Other than basic servicing they don't cause much issue though his daily has had ongoing fuelling issues caused by the fuel rail pressure switch. Rear upper suspension mounts can and do rot out in a bit you can't see, which is entertaining* when you wallop a pothole and the back end collapses. The last one we got was an MOT failure 51-plate with 140k on the clock for £150 which is now on a school contract after rectification... he swears by them.
