how come we've not had a floppy top version of "project bullet"?

most would say that this is the very definition of a shite soft top?

Looks like something my nieces play with with those Transylvanian families things.

I have been driving my 1995 Audi convertible roof down tonight but because you have one posted already here is my Mazda MX5 instead, I think it must qualify.

The saabs are shit. Handle like a pregnant camel and plagued with issues. Classic pre 93 900 is a different class however.

I'd go out of the box and pick up a herald convertible or something. I've had one of those and a vitesse sub a grand in tatty but useable condition and they were great fun

If you want to go down the classic route a Spitfire would be a  worthy contender. They cheap enough for a not-so-mint example, parts are plentiful. They're decent allrounders.

You did well there. Nice car for £600. I bet it would go for a lot more now.

What is the going rate for one of these nowadays?  That;s a really good buy there!  600 quid for a decent Midget.  Bargain!  Mind you, I personally prefer Spitfires.....

Lots of good suggestions on here. Also goes to show you don't need to spend a fortune to get the 'wind in the hair' experience especially if you avoid those cars with scene tax.

As long as you don't mind driving with your legs twisted to the side ... They have massively offset pedals that drove me nuts.

I'm a big fan of the MX5 and am missing it now that it's off the road. There was a lot of slating of MGFs going on on the MX5 forums (for no good reason other than rivalry - and k-series h8trz) I do quite fancy trying one.

I have an insane idea of getting a 160 version with rough bodywork to run for a summer then lob the engine in the Streetwise.

a bloke round the corner from me has an MX5 in a similar state to me F (i.e., tatty) and we banter about each other motors whenever we see each other, nothing unpleasant though. We have agreed to have a cabby in each others, because I have never driven a '5 and he's never driven an F.

Anyway, OP, can I leave this pic here?

It's the modern bulbous look. Gotta love them sharp lines on the Fiat.

I used to have a Barchetta, nearly 15 years ago.  It made me feel a bit fancy and sophisticated, which is some achievement given I'm a fat pillock from King's Lynn.  It could cover ground really quickly, but was a bit uninspiring to drive.  I believe they're a bit prone to rot, too.

I do. The F has grown on me since I chanced upon it but I have loved the look of the X for a long time.

I can't wait to get the X through and MoT and get some miles on it, to see how it stacks up against the F.

The x1/9 lives on if you squint at a Citroen DS3
