Rover Unwise; the little shit that could.

Should I be worried about how much you know about it?

No mate, the reg numbers are in the Rover EPC.

They were all aimed at young people with all this "urban" shite in the adverts, when what they actually attracted were little old men called Bernard and his bobble hat wearing wife, Doris who couldn't get in an out of a normal height car due to her arthritic hip.

Interesting that this car was owned by a farmer.

No doubt he or she wanted a small runabout that could negotiate rutted wheel tracks.  The Streetwise presumably had that long-neglected feature that carmakers stopped providing years ago.

A thing called ground clearance.

I got the boot lock solenoid out of this one for my own car. I reckon it had seen some farm-like use as well, as it was minging inside and out, and there were a few dings in the sills and front bumper.

Rotten as a pear in the boot - I was standing in the spare wheel well and my welly boot started to go through it. I fancied the wheels off it, but there were only 2 alloys IIRC.

This one had the cheapest, nastiest looking plastic steering wheel I ever saw on an MGR car.

A former colleague ordered one of these new at the beginning of 2005. Then read about all the uncertainty about the future of MGR and cancelled it/got out the deal somehow...Shame, as I'd have liked to have had a go to see if it was as crap as it looks. I like cars that have the pretence of being an off-roader to have 4x4...Except the Matra Rancho of course. That's allowed...

before I bought the 75 I was looking at maybe getting one of these, though as I didn't want to play OMGHGF roulette with a kettle series I was looking for a diesel one.

could I hell as like find one which was not 200 odd miles from home or that have been driven to the moon and back.

so I got a 75 diesel instead, one that has now shat its clutch.....

bumhats....

Where is that one Saucedoctor? I might start a bout of turd polishing...

That one was in my local breaker, RG, but has since gone for frag.

Damn, so it looks like I'm no longer the only Streetwise owner on here then  :-(

I have to admit I've always liked the look of these for some reason so when mine popped up cheap I couldn't resist it.

Don't have a photo of the actual car but it's basically this:

rover-streetwise-1-4-500-olympic-3dr-119

The "Olympic" edition which features even more silly wheels (17in with rubber bands) which make the ride terrible but that should be helped when I get round to fitting the slightly larger profile tyres I have sitting in the garage. I also have "standard" 25 suspension in the garage to lower it a little but again not got round to doing that yet.

All in all it's not a bad thing, yes it's nothing exciting to drive (except for the excitement of watching for the temp guage to signal OMGHGF).

It does a decent job of being a car while also being slightly off the wall so overall I'm happy with it and surely it must be prime futureshite no?

Is it called the Olympic because once you tell your missus about it, you're for the high jump?

It called Olympic because everyone who bought one was a wynnar

100% shite already, never mind futureshite

I was debating whether it qualified for an autoshite sticker or not but an approval from Mr B seals the deal!

A milestone reached today as the little Rover is pressed back into daily duties:

From a distance, it doesn't look too offensive, although the missing grilles bug me;

Overall it isn't half bad, it does feel particularly understeery but that could be the cheap crap tyres on the front.

I'm doing my best not to get too attached to the Rover as it'll be going sooner rather than later, as soon as something a bit more interesting finds it's way to me that is.

I see they let the work experience lad design the clocks.

them clocks need some new faces  - R8 ones would work? and the temp gauge would piss me off

i havent got ocd but its def the wrong way round

Nah, they're the right way round it's a mirror image of the fuel guage, it would bug me if it was the other, but I suppose by that theory then the rev counter should also be the other way round and that would just be odd.

By the way is that photo of the temp guage taken when the car is up to full operating temp, it's just that mine sits in the same position, just below half way and i wasn't sure if that was normal and perhaps the thermostat wasn't working properly.

Even in the recent warm temperature it never even nudged above this point.

"My k-series is running too cool" said no one ever...

Yeah its done probably 9 miles of easy driving by the point of the photo.

I haven't seen it above halfway either even if I'm giving it a bit.

Well today was greated an ominous death rattle from the under bonnet area of the Rover, only really when the engine was under any sort of load.

When I first bought it, I had noted that it was quite tappety on cold start just as a lot of older K series encumbered, sinking ship chariots are. I had managed to convince myself that either the cat had dropped to bits, or perhaps it hadn't taken kindly to it's new regime of more than a mile journey at a time.

Happily it was just the exhaust manifold heat shield that had vibrated loose and was fixed in a couple of minutes.

The other news is, I've arranged to see a potential replacement, so it's disposal might be the next thing on the cards.

Sort of 1/3rd/just below half way is correct for these, though the gauges are so heavily damped that they're not much cop. My 45 happily reported normal service even though it had boiled off all of its coolant!

There's loads of Streetwises in a yard I went to in Lincoln. I'll try and find the number.

Someone should do a Streetwise with twin shock rally suspension and a Trophy 160 \ VHPD K-series. That would be comical.

Noo noo noo.

THIS is an Olympic.

What you have there is A plus gold star shite, but it's not an Olympic.

Now that is nice, it looks like a highly posionous, stepped in frog.

It looks like it has sporty pretensions so it's bound to be based on something hopeless in the running gear department like all the best specials.

Well unplugging the Volumetric sensor on the alarm seems to have silenced it for now, and in addition to that, I have rewired the tailgate so the heated rear screen and the boot locking motor work again.

I've actually languished a bit of money on the Rover too, £13 on a set of front pads as they are the type with those poxy squealing tabs on that make a racket whenever you brake and the pads are a bit worn.

Lastly, some of the cat's guts had become detached and were getting a bit vocal about their new position in the exhaust, so I've dismantled the system, got all the loose bits out and put it back together. Interestingly, there was still a full wall of honeycomb in the cat, so it'll be interesting to see if it would make an mot or not.

I hadn't intended on running the car this weekend, had it's potential replacement not been such a manky old shed, it would have stayed home, but as it was it went on a 200 odd mile round trip right to the border of Lincolnshire, and then beyond where a deposit on it's replacement has secured it's fate.

Sometime after next week, the car will be available for sale, or more realistically, roffle. As there is a Rover Roffle on already, I shall hold fire until that one has concluded.

Here is the rascally Rover over looking Lincoln waterfront...

With the amount of them going on at the moment, I might buck the trend and put a price on it.

I think everyone is a bit raflled out. It's nice as a novelty/occasional thing, but there have been quite a few recently.

There was a Streetwise on Emmerdale last night, think it was the same colour as this one  :-D
