Trailer tyres

I have recently procured a trailer with mini hubs and wheels. The tyres are completely shot, and I need to fit some new tyres for it to be legal.

I currently have 3x 10" mini wheels, as I understand these will need either 145/80 r10 tyres, or 520/10 trailer tyres. Either of these options will set me back £70 + fitting for a pair. I'm quite reluctant to fit new tyres as I'll never get anywhere near wearing them out so in my mind I'll never get my money's worth.

Its hard to find either of these sizes secondhand as nothing even nearly modern takes these sizes, so part-worns rarely come up.

I have availed myself of a 315 x 105td wheel from an 80s metro, am I right in thinking that this is a metric size, so will be even MOAR harderer to find a part-worn for? The wheel came out of a skip so I'm really not going to be surprised if the answer here is 'yes'.

I think the hub size is right though, it is 4-stud, and the ebay advert I saw said the stud pattern is the same as a classic mini, so I'm hopeful.

How much weight are you carrying? They should be 8ply over a certain weight

145/10 tyres are hard to get- took me ages to get a pair of decent wheels and tyres for a bike trailer. Try and find some later 12" Mini wheels from later disc braked cars as the tyres are quite a bit cheaper, or just wang a pair of MGF 185/55/15 wheels and tyres on.

Metric tyres, forget it.

I suspected as much! do the later 12" wheels have the same stud pattern? At present the trailer has a pair of mudguards, though these could conceivably be removed/re-positioned to clear some bigger wheels. Are MGF wheels the same stud pattern as classic minis?

Re weight, I very much doubt I'd ever transport over 250kg including weight of trailer. Possibly stretch to carting an engine or similar but it's going to need a new floor tout suite or whatever I put in it will fall out the bottom! I plan to get a sheet of thick ply or fibreboard and replace all of the wood over the summer, though I need some time to complete this and thats been thin on the ground recently.

Trailer tyres are a right faff. Whatever you decide upon just make sure you take a spare wheel with you whenever you use the trailer. Waiting for hours to get towed off the motorway, then waiting for AA to turn up and say no they can't get a new tyre at the now two o'clock in the morning and then waiting for another relay to come and pick up the trailer makes you realise that carrying a spare is a very good idea. I expect you will guess how I know.

Mercifully I have 3x 10" wheels, two of of which have totally knackered tyres, but one is just about usable. The original plan was to procure 2x half decent part-worns to replace the knackered ones then keep the borderline one as a spare on board in case of mishap

I shall keep my eyes peeled for a pair of part-worn 10" tyres on the 'bay and if all else fails will buy 3x 12" or 15" wheels and tyres and bin off these ones.

Mini 10"-er's used to be the de-factor trailer tyre as there were tons about and dirt cheap, now they are a rarity as a mate recently found out (as you have). Metrics, probably don't bother, they are even worse, they are a bloody fortune to replace when you can find them at all.

I'd try larger 12"-ers if they will fit/suit your trailer set up - check what the PCD of the stud arrangement is, can't remember what a Mini's is (100? if so alot of wheels have a PCD of 4x100 so that should help).

Yes, the 12's have the same PCD

This is probably the most common PCD used on small trailers. It has a 3/8" stud. Due to the size of the studs it is limited to wheel size and weight capacity. This is not advised to be used on wheels larger than 10" and weights above 750kg per axle. This is also the PCD used on old mini wheels. There was a heavy duty 4" PCD used in the past this gave extra carrying capacity and allowed larger wheels to be used. It had a 7/16" (11.1mm) stud and was used on Indespension wheels and also old Towavan amongst others. This has been superseeded by 4 stud on 100mm PCD shown below.

Bugger, you are right. :-(  I'm ashamed of myself.

Boom, 4x 12" classic mini wheels and tyres spotted locally on the 'bay. £10. Duly watched.

Thanks all!

Take the metric wheel, cut it into quarters and eat it. It'll be less painless than finding a tyre, then trying to keep it inflated for more than 3.7 seconds.

I'd avoid crossplies like the plague, too, aim for 145/10s if you can find some cheap enough somewhere.

If you get really stuck I've probably got a couple of spare rebel steelies. 12" 4x4" pcd.

12 mini wheels were the same outside diameter as they were low profile compared to the 145/10 which were about an 80 aspect ratio iirc

10in Centuar supreme x2 one on a rim both as new, one kumho on rim as new.

Would advise tyre removal and rim refurb as tyres that lose air are a real pain.

If you want wheels and tyres,my friend who deals in Reliant spares probably has at least 200 of the damn things.

145/10 is standard Mini and reliant size, still widely available, just you have to look harder.
