Aerodecks - growing on me.

:P

I might have had to modify the temp sender to fit and the replacement thermostat was a bit tricky. but so far nothing broken ... I haven't checked under the car for leaks since getting home, but it wouldn't surprise me.

My CRX had problem with the ALB - there was a loud whirring noise coming from the ABS thing at the front every few seconds. I unplugged the ECU in the boot, and when I plugged it back in the problem stopped after a couple of minutes. They are very problematic on these Hondas.

Cheers, I might give that a try. The ALB light is pretty much always on, but no noises or issues.

I've been to the shops and done a couple of other errands in the car and it is started fine whilst hot each time, so fingers crossed that's that fixed now. I was deliberately holding off changing the thermostat until I'd had the fuel relay re-soldered ;)

The abs on old Hondas is totally different to most cars . The pump / coupling usually fails and throws up a code one fault . Sometimes a bleed of the high pressure system can help . Special tool needed really or you will make an almighty mess

I might just remove the bulb from the dash if it's going to be a world of pain .... I don't like ABS anyway.

Removing the ABS ECU to kill the light might be easier than pulling the dash out - god knows you have enough of that to do elsewhere!

The ABS brain of the Ronda 216 was big and heavy like a tin of biscuits, so that was binned right off.

The problem with removing abs is that non abs cars usually had brake pressure limiting valves for the rear brakes so you may find that the rears lock up far too easily in the wet

Had no bother with this in the R8. Samara on the other hand... that's a different story...

I'm not good at keeping these threads up to date with work on the cars, so here's 6 months update.

I've been using the car more and more over the past few months as I'm working local and really enjoy the relaxed driving and handling of the car. In December it passed it's MOT needing absolutely no work, which was nice. Me likeee red Aerodeck.

In November I rashly posted on facebook that I was enjoying the Aerodeck and wouldn't mind getting a nicer/better one, but it would need to be the same config as my current one, fuel inj (not carb) and auto. Well, instantly I was told of one in Norfolk that might be for sale ... A couple of days later I had 2 Aerodecks .. who said these cars were rare?

The second one (blue/grey) has a new stereo fitted, recent cambelt, waterpump and exhaust system, all things that my red one needed. It also had functioning cruise control. Unfortunately though the blue one just didn't handle as nicely as the red one, so it was out of favour and I continued using the red one. The blue one then failed it's MOT needing a patch of welding and the brakes fettling, well those were done this week and it now has a new MOT.

Here I am the proud owner of 2 Aerodecks:

The plan was to sell one of the Aeodecks (blue probably) however B-I-L has been having issues with the spare car (Volvo V40) and is toying with scrapping it as repairs are not economical. This morning I suggested they scrap teh Volvo and have blue Aerodeck on long term loan, which has been agreed in principal, so yay, I am keeping 2 Aerodecks, sort of.

Today I serviced red Aerodeck and have a new thermostat on order from Honda (£36 ffs) as the one fitted in September has failed. I have also got a new cambelt and water-pump to fit and will be looking at replacing the exhaust system as well .... So much for buying one that didn't need work doing, selling the red one and saving money.

I'm the same with my fleet threads, must try harder.

I would like one of these one day, preferably a manual.

That's a top pic by the way, Chris. Calendarised.

Wanna see a picture of my old one?

Tough, you're getting one anyway.

Ooh, I do like those estates. I wish they'd sold them in Thailand; if they had, I'd have snaffled one as my daily instead of the troublesome Volvo.

My CRX one was faulty when I bought it. It used to literally scream every few seconds. I had to unplug the ECU as people were constantly looking at the car. When I plugged it back in a few months later it was fine!

Cheers for the calendar nomination Joe.

Have a picture of my blue/grey 2-tone slightly chavved Aerodeck:

If it's staying long term expect it to be put back to more or less standard (time permitting).

Sorry mate, too many doorz ... All the best estates have 3 doors, shooting break stylee.

Damn you, coming to Norfolk and stealing our Aerodecks.

Do like them, I'd more than happily have one.

Got one of those

Not been near it in a while though.  Doesn't help that it's been over the water for a few years

Weeds growing through it now, no doubt

PHWOARRRR!

My old man had one of these in the early 90's. Used it for A framing chod from Bathgate-Liverpool.

Died 2001 after my brother posted it. F722 DUS

Minor note, today I changed the thermostat again. This time for a genuine Honda part (£36) which looks and fits a lot better than the old one.

Last time I changed the thermostat (September) it took around 20 minutes. Today it took over 2hrs. One of the bolts holding the thermostat housing together snapped so this resulted in all of the housing being removed from the car and the snapped bolt drilled out.

It's now back together and heating up quickly again.

To celebrate I changed the wipers, £2 GSF Hella ones, so far so good.

Sounds like that was a right war. A part failing in such a short space of time is ridiculous, but something I've fallen victim with some supposed " OEM equivalent " stuff as well.

Don't get me started on the quality of pattern parts nowadays and especially thermostats.

I've had to change the 'stat in half my fleet in the last year and this is the second one that's had 2 in less than 12 months. Each time I've bought genuine the second time. From now on all thermostats I replace will be genuine parts.

Posted

Really like these, gonna have to scratch that itch one day.

+1 on the thermostats - went through two pattern parts in 6 months on my old Corolla Twincam. Bought a genuine Toyota one which remained on it until it was sold

In an attempt to actually keep a thread up to date, here is an update.

Last week red Aerodeck did a naughty:

post-4715-0-36990800-1468138886_thumb.jpg

I've been a bit busy with work etc. this week, so a 15 minute investigation has revealed something a little odd. There is no leak with the engine running, but when you turn the engine off it appears there is some back pressure which pushes brake fluid out of the reservoir. I'm guessing it's the ABS pump.

As the ABS/ALB has been somewhat intermittent and it has an old system, with parts NLA, I think it is time to remove or at least disconnect the ABS system.

A bit of googling this morning has brought up a couple of ways of doing this.

1. Replace various parts from a non ABS car - http://mustardcat.brinkster.net/p3g/Suspension/ALBRemove/ALBRemove.htm
2. Remove fuses and relays - http://www.preludepower.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3929457&postcount=25

I shall likely be trying the removal of fuses next weekend.
