kinkersaab Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 Lightest steering in a car ever... Love it. skattrd 1
skattrd Posted May 17, 2015 Author Posted May 17, 2015 Lightest steering in a car ever... Love it. Speed sensitive power steering, uber light at parking speeds, but much less obtrusive when going at speed. I quite like it.
dollywobbler Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 Very nice. I've always liked these. Back end is very much what the future looked like back in 1986.
skattrd Posted May 17, 2015 Author Posted May 17, 2015 I hope Trigger doesn't mind me posting this, but he's got a scan of a roadtest of an Aerodeck in his collection: http://www.flickriver.com/photos/triggerscarstuff/sets/72157609968575270/ trigger 1
Lacquer Peel Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 I'm undecided about the wheels, but I have some spare 4x100 195/50/15's from a VW that I may fit, if it is 4x100 ... I need to double check the fitment. 4x114.3 I think. Civics are 4x100.Looks great, I love this era of Honda.
trigger Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 These are great cars, I got to drive quite a few of them back in the late 90s, light steering, poppy up lights and twin exhaust pipe, what's not to like?!
KruJoe Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 I seem to remember a lot of white Aerodecks. rainagain 1
skattrd Posted May 18, 2015 Author Posted May 18, 2015 First half tank of pez used, and considering the way I've been driving it (briskly) and the fact that the thermostat is broken I'm very happy with just under 30mpg. I reckon sensible driving and a new stat should see 35mpg.
D Spares & Tyres Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 That is a really nice car I also like your Merc. let me know when its up for sale and I may buy it for Mrs dodgytom if its any good. She`s really fussy about cars but she would like this I`m sure. There is a saloon locally in that colour she coos over but needs an estate. Is it manual?
HMC Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Love the styling, its like the design breif for a boggo hatch (in a rare disorganised moment) got sent to the sports car dept by mistake. Pedestrians may benefit, but I miss seeing more pop up lights about!
skattrd Posted May 19, 2015 Author Posted May 19, 2015 I have now covered 400 miles or so in this and I'm undecided as to whether this is a keeper or not. Yes I do like it and would like to keep it, but I need to be sensible as I'm currently at 13 cars, so only long term keepers can stay, and at present I'm unsure of this ones status. Tonight I stopped on the way home to top up the tank as I have 100 miles to do tomorrow morning and didn't want to stop on the way to work. After filling up (32mpg today) I had a minor FTP, bloody Honda, I thought these were supposed to be reliable. I had a quick play under the bonnet and found a loose HT lead, reattached and nope, no difference, turning over fine, just not catching. I then pushed the car off the forecourt (thankfully slightly downhill). Once parked up out of the way I had another poke around under the bonnet and couldn't see anything obviously disconnected or empty, so I tried to start it again and it started. I drove the final 30 miles home without issue. I parked it at home and tried to start it again and it turned over a few times and wouldn't catch. After a couple more cranks it started fine ... I'll try it in a bit when it's cooled down to see if it's a hot start issue or not. It's now in the naughty corner and the boring is on work duty tomorrow. Edit: cold, it starts first turn of the key, and the internet suggests the main fuel system relay could be the issue: http://www.tegger.com/hondafaq/mainrelay.html
HMC Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 Sounds like one of those niggly easy to fix but hard to diagnose faults. I've had coils play up like this on me ( other defective ignitions parts are available) How many of your 13 are on the road at the mo?
skattrd Posted May 19, 2015 Author Posted May 19, 2015 Currently 4 of my cars are legal and roadworthy. Bora, Merc, Delta & Aerodeck.I also have a Jersey registered car that could be used in an emergency, but I wouldn't do that, as that's naughty.
forddeliveryboy Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 Probably no help, but my Honda of a 1988 vintage (1.6 CRX) did exactly the same within a day of me buying it. After a quick panic on a forecourt, it turned out to be a spade connector inside the distributor cap which had worked loose. Once crimped up, normal Honda service was resumed. Took all of 3 minutes to go from omg£££oem to phew!
KruJoe Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 Hondas of that age are notorious for it, as are the D-series Rovers like mine. I don't know why it always presents as a hot-start issue - pez stops seem just the right* time for it to be turned off, then FTP.On the Rovers, it's the brown fuel pump relay hidden behind the radio. It could be accessed by lying on ones back in the passenger footwell, so no need to remove the console. After a while of living with it, I got used to listening for the 'click' as the fuel pump tripped off about two seconds after turning the ignition on (just as you'd wait for the heater plugs to go off), then I knew it would start. That was until I got off my arse and up into the field for the known good relay from my spares car. That one is still dangling from its wires into the passenger footwell, as I've yet to unbolt the troublesome one from its bracket. The relays can be repaired, apparently it's common for a soldered connection to fail inside, and just needs re-doing. I still don't know why it only presents in hot-start situations. Weird but such a common fault. Edit: Here's my brown relay, it is shown as black in that link posted above. skattrd 1
skattrd Posted May 23, 2015 Author Posted May 23, 2015 Well, as things stand this will most likely be my transport for Shitefest ... after which time it will be for sale.I'm not really gelling with the car, yes I like it, but I have decided on a more sensible w203 Merc for estate duties. Skizzer 1
skattrd Posted May 30, 2015 Author Posted May 30, 2015 Ok, does anyone want to buy this? I've not got the V5 through yet, but will provide full receipt and forward on when it comes through. I may have accidentally purchased a Tipo. HillmanImp, derskine, stillOrange and 2 others 5
skattrd Posted May 30, 2015 Author Posted May 30, 2015 Oh, it's currently got an almost full tank of v-power.I've fitted a new air filter and a replacement thermostat is in the boot.MOT December 2015. stillOrange 1
Lacquer Peel Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 I'm glad the Tipo is "in the family". What a bargain. skattrd 1
PhilA Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 The relays can be repaired, apparently it's common for a soldered connection to fail inside, and just needs re-doing. I still don't know why it only presents in hot-start situations. Weird but such a common fault. Physics. I've had this with relays before. Cold, everything settles to the position it needs to and works. It all heats up at about the same rate and everything stays in line and connected. Leave it to cool off a little and the main contacts cool off faster than the coil as they have somewhere to sink the heat to (wiring) and the relay twists just enough as it cools to break the marginal contact. Once it all cools down it pulls into line again and normal service is restored. --Phil
skattrd Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 As most of you are aware this was my transport to/from Wales for SF, and it performed brilliantly that weekend, except the bit when it wouldn't start with JohnK and others in it for a run the Sunday. After a small wait it started fine, damned hot start nonsense. Minor update:I had the fuel relay re-soldered the other weekend, so that's hopefully the hot start issue fixed. If it persists the good folk of a Honda FB group have told me it will be the temp sender at fault.I'm using the Honda for the run to/from the train station this week and I really am enjoying using it. After a shitty day at work and a stupid commute the last leg home in a 1980's Honda is quite enjoyable. I don't know what it is about this car, the driving position isn't great (too high) but the engine is good, the handling decent and autobox does what it should do. This car has definitely grown on me, maybe it's the velour, pop-up lights and funky tailgate. Oh, and it's not for sale any more. JohnK, Cavcraft, Jazoli and 1 other 4
Ghosty Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 High driving position in a pre-2000 small Honda? ??????? Lacquer Peel 1

Just admit it, it's completely fucked and needs scrapping. £70 TONIGHT M8?!
skattrd Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 How's the FIAT TYPE? The Tipo is on loan to mate who was car-less. He's been using it for a month or so, I assume it's ok as he hasn't told me it's blown up or anything. That said, the Tip might be for sale on it's return, or until I drive it again and change my mind about selling that as well JohnK and Lacquer Peel 2
skattrd Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 High driving position in a pre-2000 small Honda? ??????? I'm looking out of the top of the windscreen, and I'm not that tall, so the seat feels high. Small Honda? It's an Accord (not Civic) with a 2l engine, so it's not that small for it's time ... That said, it's smaller than a modern small car.
skattrd Posted September 19, 2015 Author Posted September 19, 2015 Very minor update and no pics, but I've just changed the thermostat and temp sender, fingers crossed for no leaks.I should now have a toasty warm car a bit quicker in the mornings now. KruJoe 1
ruffgeezer Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Did you manage not to break anything during this operation? That's something new!
