Veg oil, how many use it?

Well if old Volvos will take the weight of two or more other Volvos on their roof, 1000 litres of veg would be a breeze!

I would use WVO if I could get hold of any, and the same goes for fully converted biodiesel. Despite living in a hippy-laden part of Wales though, it's pretty much impossible to get hold of.

Despite? Shouldn't that be Because.. ?!!

The XM is the ultimate collection vehicle when there's a load offered at once, as with explosive-cabbage's recent heads up to the 600 filtered/centrifuged litres in the East Midlands at 20-odd ppl.

I've got 80l of wvo sitting at work if anyone wants it for nowt.

I'm in Wells next the Sea btw.

Intel for all you veggies: KTC sunflower oil is currently on offer at Morrison's - £4 for 5 litres.

I would like to try using veg oil in the Tata but since it hasn't broken down yet I don't want to do something that has the potential to make it run like shit. Also I don't know what type of pump and injectors it uses.

Post up a pump picture for the people's perusal.

That's a peugeot Xud engine with a Tata head. That's fitted with a Bosch pump....you have a veggie.

Anyone know how to turn the boost up?

This guide is for a 405 TD but the same principles apply to most mechanically controlled diesels with a wastegate turbo.

I started reading up about it a couple of years back, but never had the nerve to try it in either the Fiesta (55 plate TDCi) or the LT (2.4 turbo DV). But since running it far too low and adding a fill of water-rich diesel in France last year and suffering all the way home till I did the filters, I'm a little more confident I could deal with the consequences of cocking it up. Anyone advise on that engine's suitability for it? I'm told it's the same lump as in Volvo 760s.

The tdci will not take it well..

The LT on the other hand should eat it right up(assuming it has a bosch pump)

Have a read here and ask away:)http://autoshite.com/topic/20776-diesel-tinkering/?fromsearch=1

I can't imagine that was a happy sheep. I wonder where that veg oil came from too. Suspiciously cheap.

Don't be racist. Not every Muslim is a sheep torturing terrorist.

I'm now using the oil I get from work. I filter it throughout a fine mesh filter also from work and again through a rag when I get it home. So far this month I are spend £10 on diesel to cut it with. As opposed to the £60 + it would normally take. The Fronteras 4 headed monster is so far loving it. I just wish my VW Boring would run it aswell.

From my experiences with Volvo 940s fitted with the same engine, they are not keen to start from cold on a strong mix of veg, but once they're going they go well.

Apparently the 4 cyl versions (1.5, 1.6) of these engines aren't great at starting on veg either, maybe they'd benefit from advanced timing.

I had a 1999 polo. It was an absolute cunt to start on veg and when you got out you smelt like you work in the chippy. Good fun tho stickin the v's up at the tax man. 20 litres £15 from macro. Pour into watering can then straight into car.

Hey, good call on the dedicated watering can idea!

The Pleasure Wagon is a bit slow to gulp it down, so that would have worked well, but we've now upgraded to a pez-pump style trigger job for dispensation purposes, and we're cooking on gas.

I put mine in by the 5L can as I'm a geek and like to log the consumptions

It'll probably kill the Fiesta but the LT should love it - up to 90%ish. With the LT's need for fuel, I'd double the supply line (from tank to pump) diameter. It could need a larger/twin filter, too, unless you heat the fuel pre-filter. Otherwise going up a long hill could get very tedious. Advance the pump a little too if the engine sounds a bit fluffy and soft on high %s of veg - German diesels have long been on the retarded side for emissions purposes, so slower-burning veg can need a pump tweak on the old all-mechanical setups.

Remember that lack of compression, poor injector spray patterns or duff plugs could cause terminal probs. Incomplete combustion is death, if allowed to continue! It's not the fuel that's the problem, just that the engine is tailored for thinner fuel with a lower ignition temperature.

Good veg (rapeseed, ideally - not that genetically modded soya oil) is a far better fuel than any diesel - it needs no additives to burn cleanly and is a natural lube, whereas even with a cancerous cocktail of additives, derv still makes the inside of your engine filthy. Without sulphur or bio oil additives, it wears the inside of the pump out pretty fast, too.

 and we're cooking on gas.

if only you had some cooking oil to help with that.

oh, wait...

I used to run our old Fiat Marea 100 on wvo. Was fine for at least 20000 miles.

Lucas EPIC = instant fail on veg, according to those who know. But mine ran through winter 2010 at -Arctic (75-80%) and was still going well two years later when I lost at cambelt roulette. There are stories of the Italian jtds being very tough and loving good veg.
