Worth of 2002 Ford Mondeo TDCI Ghia X

My dad has a Ford Mondeo, it's got the 2.0 diesel engine. I think it was a taxi at some point as it's over 200,000 miles. It's one of the 99% of these that came in Ghia X spec which means a depressingly black interior with grim leather seats and electric everything.

It hasn't succumb to the DMF failure (yet). He wants it sold as he's getting something else, blah blah etc. I've driven it a few times as these Fords are quite nice to drive, but I hate the interiors.

It's in reasonable condition, and I have to change the aux belt tensioner (it's seized as it has been squealing for the past two years), but he never services cars, but then again he's done about 1000 miles in five years in it.

It's a randomly arbitrary number, but can anyone tell me how much these things are worth as he's instructed me to 'sell it on ebay' - a concept he is clearly unfamiliar with.

A few hundred quid.

High mileage and the first big bill will see it off. Something you run until the MOT runs out.

He's been saying he should scrap it for a while, I agree tbh. The hassle you'd get from selling this for £300 to council estate vermin would be intolerable. GIV U 5p. AHM WALKIN A WAY

With that sort of mileage most people will possibly wrongly assume its fucked so I'd be inclined to take whatever you can get on Ebay. You might get £500 for it given its a diesel. I'd just be sure on ebay you get a receipt timed and dated, as your likely buyer on Ebay is probably one of these idiots who sounds like his mouth is full of bread. He'll most likely go round telling anyone that will listen that 'I run it on cherry me, costs me nowt in diesel'

Yes. This will bring the pond life from their SKY dishes in droves. I'd put it on Ebay in all seriousssnessseess. 99p start, away it goes, Two attempts and then bridge it.

Stick it up for sale here if it's decent there's usually someone looking for a cheap car.

Bang it up for about £500, and expect to see circa £400 for it. You'll get an inordinate amount of knobheads offering £150 though, so he'll need to be patient.

I'll give you £150 for it.

Dealing with the sort of arses you'll get is probably not going to be worth your while, but if it's not something you do regularly the first couple of "buyers" and their ridiculous offers can be amusing if nothing else

I would rather scrap it than have some picasso driving, greggs eating, trampoline owning mutant turning up and expecting a warranty finance and mats for a £200 car.

Some Ghia X's still fetch decent money, but the fact it is a pre-facelift (there's a good few differences), has starship mileage and no service history, means I would bang it on ebay at 99p start - and I never do this.

If it has cooled seats and DVD with headrest monitors, mention it.

They are options, and Mondeo perverts still want these.

I used to have a 53 plate, facelift Ghia X hatch. It was a lovely car.

Sold it about a year ago to a mates mate (Ford tech) for £750.

The DMF was rattling, as it had been for about 10K, and it had a mixture of stamped service history and my DIY efforts.

If I could have put up with a few prespective buyers running for the hills, at the random flywheel sounds, I could have found someone who wanted it, for more than I sold it for.

These ramblings make a bit of sense. I think.

Basically, the prices are all over, facelifts are worth more (obviously), and people still buy LX's etc, so I'm sure someone will happily take a punt on your dad's Ghia X, even if they just strip the high spec stuff out of it.

I would rather scrap it than own a Mondeo.

I have an '02 Mondeo TDCi - albeit a Zetec, so two steps down from your dad's.  It's done fewer miles and doesn't have a squealy tensioner, but the DMF is starting to rattle a bit at idle.  I value it at about 450 quid with a full test.

2 attempts on ebay then bridge is fantastic sage advice

At this price level its condition that ought to be the deciding factor over age and spec. Hence a doom blue 1.8 petrol with steelies on us probably best buy.

Back in the late 90's my sister (the Christian one) sold a knackered 200K miles 1.6 Y reg sierra estate worth next to fuck all to a desperate family from her church for £500, at £10 a week for 50 weeks 0% APR .  When I found out I gave her a bit of grief as a) she'd been given it with 160K on it by our dad, and B) I couldn't see it lasting 50 weeks, and c) if she was Christian she would have given it them.

Then they invented the internet, and gum-tree.

In terms of value, would you make more breaking it ?

18 months ago I only managed to get £900 for an '04 plate LX TDCi with 103K and FSH, in really nice nick. It also had a DMF changed (at a cost of nearly £700) only 15K previously.

These things are worth feck-all, sadly.

They're nice cars to drive, and roomy, but are ticking financial time-bombs that can go a bit frilly around a few edges, and impress absolutely no-one other than the driver. Despite probably being a better car than most comparable VAG products.

Shame, really.

Depends how much ticket it has left with stuff like this....

Long MOT then maybe 450 sovs

Short MOT then probably no more than 250

Clean it up, take a few pics then wack it on Autotrader for £9.99 - Thats the advert price not the price of the car.

On the other hand try this forum first, I know its not what it used to be, but ya never know!

Then wait for some buffoon with his Gio goi hat, some jog legs and a 'mate' whose read a lot of magazines about cars to come round and give a critique of the car.

I bought a 54 reg 2.0 TDCi Ghia X in 2009. At 4.5 year old I gave £2250 for it with 94k on the clock. They were worth fuck all then, nevermind now.

Ghia X isn't a bad spec though. It's worth 4-500 if you're prepared to put up with dickheads.
