Down here in sunny Bucks we have the 'secret' 'Strike Command' bunker, that no-one is supposed to be able to know it exists without a zillion levels of security clearance, but it has road signs to it so that delivery drivers can find it...

I would suspect that those of us up here have had a vague idea where Foadwerx is for some time.

The two things that stick out for me are the access road making it look like its in the middle of nowhere and how new the building is, I've always regarded coal mines as dark, Victorian type places yet seeing the picture I posted the other day and reading the links has made me realise that there was a lot of new coal work happening in the 50s and 60s.

And i grew up about 25 miles from the place.

I'm told a dob of ATF in the oil will help shift clag like that, although I've never tried it. It's not likely to do any harm at any rate even if it doesn't work.

Am not quite up on my BMW's but I think that is an M40 engine, the same as they used on the early E36 it was carried over I believe. The engine has a spray bar above the cam, same as a pinto. When the holes in the bar get blocked the cam and upper timing gear gets no lubrication and then sounds like that. If you catch it early you can rescue it. That sounds a bit past it, my mine clattered for a few seconds on start up and mine needed cam and followers to cure it.

I may be remembering this wrong but I seem recall RBJ of this parish running an m40 sans oil for around 100 miles without it dying.

I went over to Airdrie this morning to look at the Mazda, we had been discussing on the way over why it hadn't sold yet as it's been up for sale for a good few months and had run out of mot in the summer and hadn't been in for another one.

Anyway, we got there and the wee 323 was sitting in the corner, it hadn't been started in months and had no fuel in it. I did bring my own fuel which had been drained out of the Mercedes when I was changing the fuel filter.

I poured as much as I could in the car, a lot of it ended up spilling down the side of the car.

The seller didn't know anything about the car, it was a customers car that he had ended up with for some reason, he tried to start it but the starter motor would only catch occasionally and when it did fire he still couldn't get it going. He ended up draining the battery.

We got a booster pack on it and I eventually got it started, I poured some fuel into the carb and discovered that there was no air filter fitted.

I handed over the cash, insured it and jumped in.

It died a minute or so after driving it.

I had to stop and go through the whole process of trying to get the started motor to engage while feathering the throttle and getting the choke right.

I got it going again and set off for home.

There's a bit of steering wheel wobble and the tracking is out, it wasn't particularly pleasant to drive at lower speeds but a motorway speeds it was manageable.

I drove it 40 or so miles and it coped reasonably well, I had to leave the choke on all of the way, I imagine the lack of air filter wasn't helping it run correctly with no choke.

Everything was going fine until I got off the motorway and it died on the slip road.

I got it going again and it ran like crap for a couple of miles, I had to use my left foot on the brake while keeping the revs up and holding the choke out, if I let go of the choke, the lever wanted to pull back in.

I stalled a few more times before I got home.
