Six Cylinders Motoring Notes

Six-cylinder

Sounds like I was conned, but serves me right for throwing the parcel in the shed without opening it.

You are not the only one, I bought an expensive set of seat covers listed for my Citroen GS that did not fit properly. They turned out to be Universial but I only tried to fit them 6 months after I got them. I could have bought the universal ones for a fraction of the price if I wanted some that did not fit correctly!

I have had a nice run out today to meet up with the Triumph Sports Six Club, as my Vitesse is hiding in a barn the Sovereign S1 got a run out. Yarnton Garden Center is 27 miles from me but I managed to add over 10 miles to the route just because it was a nice morning to be driving a 1973 Daimler!

For some time I have been concerned by the high reading on the cars water temp gauge and once again no signs of over heating but I do not like the needle so close to the “H†mark so when I got home I left the car idling for 15 mins and then tried my new laser guided auxiliary temp gauge. 85.8° C on the thermostat housing and 84.9° C on the radiator by the top hose, looks like all is well and I just need to give the gauge a good talking too.

On New Years Day Hairnet chauffeured me in this car when it was pouring with rain, today the wipers don’t work, it must be his fault!

My temp gauge reads high as well which really annoys me as it had new thermostat, the three temp sensors and new coolant. Like you, all gauges should sit in the bloody middle unless: A, fuel gauge when it will be on the 'e' mark, or B, the thing is actually malfunctioning!

I was so stressed by it I sent it back to Specialist cars to have it checked out and was informed (and shown pictures) of the same as you. Apparently it is a 'thing' with the new sensors available now for my car at least that they read high. Mine isn't as high as yours but it is so bloody annoying. I'd have the sensors changed again but they are so bloody expensive and take many hours to fit as there is so much crap to remove before you can even see them. I have even contemplated taking the gauge out and modifying it (read: bend the fucking needle!) ...

At least one thing is: the thermostats only last a couple of years in my car and then start to fail 'open' (lead pellets melt just in case overheat) so they read progressively cooler.

I HATE cars sometimes!

Would you find one if these offensive? Would need to carefully paint the bezel black:

But it should work well with a modern sender.

It looks good on its own, but not for one out of a set of four.

There's some strange forces at work here - you bought a Kettle-series MG and now you're reporting OMGHGF but on a Citroen?! That's the ex Hairnet car isn't it? Who owns it now? I've lost track.

It is the ex Hairnet car, I bought it from JohnK who did not have time to fix it. I trailered it down from Middlesborough yesterday. Its future is uncertain because I don't think it is economical to have the work done, but it would be very useful and cost effective if I broke it for spares.

My MG ZR has no head-gasket problems at all, now this is asking for it!

Hope you had an uneventful journey back Chris and apologies again that I couldn't be there. Would be a shame if it gets broken but equally at least it would be getting some use as opposed to sat on my drive on the list of projects needing work.

Where is the real 6-cylinder?

The limit has been reached!

Under restoration/major works now –

1985 Range Rover

1971 BMW 3.0S

MG Metro Mk1

Peugeot 504 cab

Citroen LNA

Citroen Visa GT

Already on the list

Alfa Giulietta

Daimler Sovereign, poss 2!

Then there is the bit of work list......

And the maintenance/MOT List.....

Now I can tell you the rest of the Visa collection story, 400 miles towing all very straight forward. Unloading perfect.

Then it all went wrong! I did not have the energy to disconnect the trailer from the car, turn it by hand and reconnect it to leave the yard, so decided to charge across the grass field and straight out of the gate. Foot down hard only 200 feet of grass and I made it but the last 20ft! It is now dark the Xantia is just digging itself a hole. Usual stuff builders bag under the wheels and it was just going deeper. I did not have keys to the tool shed so could not dig a way out or keys to any of the equipment such as the Digger! There is a fully working and legal car but again I did not have the keys, enough phone a friend for a lift home.

Today I went to recover it on my own as nobody was free to help, the plan was to just give it a pull with my Range Rover. That fell at the first hurdle as the tow eye is screw in and the access panel is wedged into the mud. Luckily I remembered Xantias will get up in the air if asked, next where is the eye noware to be seen so I guess under the car in the spare wheel over the pool of water and mud, non problem I will just use the Rover 75 one that is easy to get too, no just luck wrong thread! Anyway it went on for a while but in the end I did connect it the Range Rover that was on hard standing. Barely off idle and the stuck Xantia complete with trailer came out of the field, the Xantia needs a wash now!

That's a shame about hairnets visa. It's the sort of thing I find myself taking pity on. I guess though that with all your other Visas and LNA's you can probably recycle almost all of it single handedly right?

This is the plan, the GT needs some floors panels that are just not available elsewhere.

Great news today my Yellow Peril the MG ZR has passed its MOT with no advisories, now MOTed until 4th March 2018.

It needed a number plate, 3 bulbs and a CV boot. I have also had it serviced. The garage owner collected me in it for the 5 miles to his workshop so I could take it home and it petered to a halt on the road side, neg battery lead had fallen off!

In spite of the breakdown he went on to say it was in excellent condition and as I know, drives very well.
