Six-cylinder Posted December 24, 2017 Author Posted December 24, 2017 The auto electrician said the trigger is from the coil/module. The auto electrician said the wire between the coil and the ECU had continuity, but I can't remember if he said there was a trigger pulse. The ECU is located under the dash on the drivers side and is difficult to get too. I asked for the ECU part number but he could not read it without removing it, which involves a lot of dismantling of the dash etc. Getting to the ECU means standing on your head in the footwell. Mrs6C having to tow me back from Silverstone with the Volvo XC70. All test gave strange results and that turned out to be the engine earth strap, not broken just corrosion.
Zelandeth Posted December 24, 2017 Posted December 24, 2017 This is where having two people comes in handy as one can be standing on their head with the meter or scope while you crank it etc. Shouldn't take a huge amount of effort to at least pin down which of the basic blocks involved is responsible. "It won't go" is far easier to troubleshoot to be honest than "it runs poorly" ...unlike modern injection setups where you've got CANbus, immobilisers and goodness knows what else involved!

The back history is the car had a habit of not starting for a couple of years if left for weeks, but a quick wiggle of the wiring behind the battery turned it back into a good starter. Then one spring no amount of wiggling would start it and after a lot of cranking it burst into flames! I understand why now as the cold start injector spays petrol though the manifold when the engine is being cranked so it must have been afloat with fuel. I have replaced the obviously burnt HT leads but it seems their may be some damaged wires on the back of the engine. Remember the car would not start before the fire. After the fire the coil was diagnosed as not working and has been replaced after several years looking for one with one from Holland this year. I have had it 11 years and I am quite patient with my cars as I am in the privileged position of not needing it for work Monday morning but I am beginning to wonder if it is worth it.

Zelandeth Posted December 24, 2017 Posted December 24, 2017 That's really quite useful information as it gives us a known dodgy area of wiring to point suspicion at. Armed with a wiring diagram we should be able to ascertain if there are any problems there. The fact that your electrician found continuity from one end of the loom to the other doesn't necessarily mean that a signal is getting through. It's entirely possible that the wire has shorted to another conductor or to ground - especially if there's been a fire! It's just a matter of being methodical and patient about it really. If you can find the connectors involved it's entirely possible that it might be worth having those bits of the loom remade. These cars do try our patience sometimes, but there's just something about real Citroens. I managed about a month short of two years after I sold on my first Xantia 1.9TD. Now there's a bloody Activa in the drive! I'm sure the air will be turned blue when that goes wrong the first time! Mrs6C and Six-cylinder 2

Was mostly complete, as with most of the stuff at the back being less common models. Saw it the day I utterly failed to save the immaculate Nissan Cherry 1.3SGL someone had just driven in to the yard.

Six-cylinder Posted December 26, 2017 Author Posted December 26, 2017 The two big successes of 2017 have been the return to the road of our MG Metro MK1 and Citroen LNA The LNA was if I bid low I can dream of owning it without the trouble it would bring, £103.99 was not low enough! The Metro was Mrs6C letting nostalgia get the better of her, her teacher had one and we could not afford a proper one so bought a project, It turned out to be much worse that described. Both cars took more than a year but are now running MOTed just needing paintwork. HMC, Coprolalia, Mrs6C and 4 others 7
