NO! Not for me. Never, ever, ever for me.

Next door neighbour is looking for a suitable Corsa for his daughter as a first car. Budget.... around a grand. 1.0 massive engine size a must. Oh fuck, forgot to ask if pudding stirrer or badermatic transmission. Must have a very, very large MOT and not be shit. Oh and as close as humanly possible to the shithole that is North London.

Easy.

Ta hugely

Ken

NB: It is NOT for me, ok.

If I was in the need to buy something it would be the White Rover of Loveliness.

1.2 manual in Caribic Blue with sunroof and flawless throughout.  This will be available in the next week or two when it's as close to perfect as it can be.  As a result of how solid it is and what I've invested in it, and my belief that it will sail through its next MoT without an issue I'm wanting £595

I am unfortunately rather a long way from London but there's absolutely no reason this little car couldn't make it there without failing to proceed as I drove it home and had absolute confidence in it.

MoT until the 2nd of May 2015.

Ken, for their sake buy the best 'B' they can, they're a better built car than the C.

Cheers guys, how do I know a B from a C? What would I look out for?

I will ask V, I will ask but knowing them (nice people but a bit wet) they will not want to venture further than a not very far away thing.

It looks like it might have to be a courtesy car for Mike's Dad in the short term at any rate, fuel pump has just packed in on his Jag.  I doubt they'll travel this far north for it too, and the engine is probably too big... I don't particularly want to deliver it either.

The corsa c was the shape after vulgs which ran from roughly 2000-2006, agree with cavcraft the b is a better put together car, c's leak in like sieve's from the brake servo mounting plate sealant into the drivers footwell and from the bcm seal into the passenger's side, the passenger's side isn't bad to do but the drivers side can get costly if your paying someone to do it as it's a pita

Corsa Bs are nearly all rotten as a 5 year old pear now. Check carefully underneath, particularly the front crossmember. C's barely rust at all but they aren't as reliable as the b.

Be careful with them massive sweeping generalisms everyone!

Corsa b's are moar reliabuble than xms;)

I cannot reconcile a 1.0 corsa with the word "wanted."

All the 1.0 litre corsas I hear sound like a skeleton having a wank in a filing cabinet .

The old 1.2 cambelt engine was a much sweeter lump

The cam-chain in the 1.0 is like an necklace, thin as something very thin and metally.....

EDIT: arg, beaten to it by twosmoke!

Cam chain is fine, its the lazy bastard owners who don't change the oil that causes the tensioner to wear and slacken.

Mine is on it's original cam chain, is about to hit 90k and is quiet as you like.

By the way, post 97 Ecotec 16v 1.2s are chain driven as well.

I will question them further about the actual wantage details. I feel a headache coming on.

Much as I appreciate IainL's comments, the Vauxhall service interval of 20K didn't exactly help matters, did it?  Especially when they get ordinary oil in it.

The 'instruction' I got from a prof mechanic was 'change the oil at 5K, use anything you like and it'll be fine'.

My lad's 1.0 C was ok, the engine sounded a bit 'lawn mower-ish' but surprisingly got quieter the quicker you went, and if you held it at say 70 it was fine. They were better for metal than the B, though the sub frame had gone on ours which was a job and a bit.

I can't even agree with Ian, I've honestly seen very few Bs that were even mildly concering underneath and I include some old ones I've been looking at very recently. That doesn't mean they don't rust though, of course.

The one I've just got looks fine underneath but has had a very hard life by the look of it, so I'll probably just bum it for the oily bits and fit them to a better petrol one instead.

Anyhow, out of the lot I'd be looking at a 1.2 (or best of all, a 1.4 8 valve) B or a 1.0 or 1.2 C.

I'm with Iain on the rot front, a clean underside is the exception rather than the rule in the ones I've seen.  They might not have rotten floors, but often they have massive holes in the boot and crumbling sills.

Amy's 1.2 c used to rattle it's arse off when it wanted an oil change.

Fresh oil and filter made it happy again. Was coming up to needing a new chain and ancillaries though, we got rid at 98k
