metro woes.

Gearbox failed on the vectra last night so instead of a project being done bit by bit the metro has been pushed in to action. Went for its mot and it passed with no advisories which I was impressed with. Anyway the car runs fine but the gearbox chirps and judders when pulling off and chirps a bit up and down the box when changing gear. The previous owner assured me it was fine before it was laid up which leads me to believe it can't be anything too major and also the car has low mileage. Thanks folkd

Not sure on either. But I have got a bottle of 20/50 I bought this evening when I bought the alternator and be changing it tomorrow.

Dropping the oil will make a difference.

 

So will dropping the vectra off at the weighbridge.

I can hear James Brown. But then again The garage who replaced clutch have said they will investigate it as it was fine before clutch replacement and clutch only done 3/4 week ago. Anyway back to metro. Oil change imminent

I feel your pain as a fellow vectra owner.

 

If the clutch has been replaced send it back to them.

They prob didn't put any oil back in! I had mondeo like that in a month or 2 ago

I was told 10/40 is too thin for the a+ series engines. And the motor factors gave me 20/50 when I asked what they thought. It's still gearbox in sump same as yours.

i've used 10w40 in both the metro and mini since i got them without any ill effects. 

 

but if thats what you've been told then who am i to argue?

I haven't had dealings with the a series engine before so don't know the ins and outs yet! May pm you for more info in future though! Is your metro the 1275 or 998?

A lot of BL lumps are supposed to run on 10W/40, according to the literature that comes with the car.

 

However the rover V8 needs 20W/50, most engine builders advise that this is best.

 

The thick stuff should be good for a metro.

20w50 in all A-Series engines.

 

The little autobox on vehicles so equipped has a hard enough time dealing with the pollutants from the engine and I believe 'those in the know' recommend 3000 mile changes.

 

I use Halford's classic 20w50.

the metro is a 998, and the mini is a 1275... always have had a huge love for the vdp.

 

an old dear who lived near us had one new when i was a nipper, in 2 tone blue/silver. at the time me mam had a proper povvvo spec city which i later learned to drive in. no back wiper, radio, fag lighter, head rests, or parcel shelf...... proper cheap!!

 

pm's are ok. .

 

i've been changing oil and filters at 5000 miles, the metro currently needs doing, just waiting for a break in the weather....`

i had the misfortune to have an vectra with an F18 gearbox- they do rather like to shat the crown gear somewhat

The solution to this minor mishap is glaringly obvious:

Sell the Metro, use money to repair Vectra.

Use 10w40 and make sure the level is bob on. The auto box is especially finnicky around the oil quality and level.

 

Change every 4000 miles not 6000 as the handbook says, the oil in a box-in sump car gets a very hard life.

Sorry dave,the reference to clutch going was related to the vectra which seems to have eaten it's box,the metro is an automatic

Oil changed. Still got a judder and slip/squeak/chirp but only done 2/3 miles. See how it goes over time.

The chap who replaced the clutch is going to inspect it and I or a friend will be there while he strips it. Worst case scenario is new clutch,oil seal and gearbox. Can get a gearbox from Albert looms For 75 quid if I remove it. Also get 30 day warranty too.
