Edit: It's sold now but I'm still looking for something similar.

Blah blah blah boring blah blah blah might paint it multi coloured blah blah blah.

For the curious.

It's a Golf.

I quite like it.

Yes I'm a VW fanboy, deal with it.

Would be GR9001 if someone would be up for giving it a once over on my behalf, last time I went down that way for a car I didn't buy it and I really don't fancy doing that again (call me a pussy, IDGAF).

It's at:

Westwood Motors (nothing to do with that DJ numpty I hope)

Honley Business Centre
New Mill Road
Holmfirth
West Yorkshire
HD9 6QB

Anyone up for that? Tokens for beers/petrol/deezel available.

'nice example'? It's missing half the front splitter and badly scraped on 3 corners...

Do you have to travel 400 mile return trips to get tatty Golfs? Is there nothing nearer to home? Fine if you want it but looking at the arches etc it's a lot of money.

Posted

I can tell you from the photos that it's not worth £795!

Front and rear arches are grotty on the passenger side for a start, not to mention it looks like it's been intercepted in road wars. If I can see that in these vaseline lense pics then I can only imagine how ropey it is in real life.

Can't help but agree with what's been said. It's not a particularly nice example, not rare, not really worth travelling any great distance for and certainly not cheap. If it was me, I'd be searching closer to home.

WHS

That does seem salty for a mk3, yes it is a GL and Tdi, but the bodywork looks a bit rough ... You could get a mk4, Leon or Octavia for that much. I paid around that price for my Boring tdi 3-4 years ago.

If you still want it checked over after all the positive encouragement above then I think Dink would be your man. He lives in the Hudd so might be worth throwing him a PM.

I'm not that far from that Huddersfield there, but I blatantly refuse to look at anything Golf, be it vehicular, or other.
Unless you really can't find anyone else, that is, but expect my appraisement to be of the hammering kind by default.

Aldi currently has pineapples on sale, if need be.

Firstly thanks for not filling this thread with abuse asking why I would want such a langweilig auto. Secondly I should probably explain that I've had this itch for making a MK3 Golf Harlequin coming and going for quite a while. I'm sure most here will know about the Polo Harlequin that was made available(ish) in Europe for a bit, well the USA got them as the MK3 Golf. Yes making a Polo Harlequin replica would be easier thanks to there being a fook load of base cars around but I don't fancy making a replica of a car that was sold here officially because. y'know, that just wouldn't be unique enough (HA!). The condition of the body work doesn't really bother me too much so long as the sills and floor aren't full of rot as the bolt on panels would be getting replaced and/or painted anyway so any defects would be sorted, new front wings are quite agreeably priced as it turns out.

The TDI I started the topic with is sold now by the way, as for it being a "nice example"... It's better than some others on the market, lets say that. Do I need to travel to find a nice one? Yes probably, the used car market around these parts is pretty dire for the most part but I've always got one eye on what's nearby on Auto Trader, Ebay, Gumtree, Facebook etc.

(And for the record no, I wouldn't be 'slamming' it)

I would love to know what kind of person bought these things when they were brand new.

When my aunt was between cars in the mid 1990s she got a Polo Harlequin as a hire car. Who bought them? Hire car companies at a massive discount.

Yes I can imagine that they wouldn't have sold like cheap TV's on black friday but I have an (admittedly unsubstantiated) feeling that most of the 3,800 of them can't have been sold for fleet use? Who knows, maybe there are even one or two collectors who have delivery mileage ones in a warehouse somewhere. Apparently they only went into production due to public demand to buy them after all.

You've probably picked on a poor time of Golfs and Polos, both seem to rust badly 94-99 ish. I'm surprised that one has survived, a friends 95 1,9D Golf was in a shocking state in 2002 and my 98 Polo was crusty as fook at 10 years old.

Now the motives are clear(er), I kinda understand why you're looking at this one - the red shell would be a good starting point for a Harlequin. Nice idea!

I've seen VR6s in better nick with similar mileage for less than £795 though.

I would have been in the right area to have a look too, as a mater of fact, but I don't have a car and my lift won't drive over to Holmfirth in the snow, as I'm just the other side of the Peak District presently.

Probably the same kind of person that bought Ronal 'teddy bears'?

Yeah it wasn't a great time for VW's quality in that regard, I'll just have to find one with minimal rust and look after it well.

Yeah the price on that one was a bit off, a cheeky offer/starting point can sometimes cure that though.

I think those were an option for them too just incase your multicoloured car wasn't quite silly enough.

I regularly pass through the area for work (it's probabaly quicker to take the m62 from hudds to Manchester but any excuse to twat a pickup truck up & down Holme moss) but have no idea if or when I'll be heading that way until the start of the day. More than happy to check one out for you if it's still for sale though

The one above is not available now but if I see something worth while round that way again I'll drop you a line.

Here's a red Rolling Stones one, and also the most northerly one I could see - Dewsbury. Same price as before though.

I think you have linked the wrong one there but I have seen the Rolling Stones one, and it's lovely, but I really don't fancy running a 1.6 to be honest (like there wasn't enough restrictions on what the base car needs to be, right?). So with that in mind a TDI is obviously the top of the bunch here but I could live with a 1.4.

GREAT. I like those wheels though...

You'll get a Mk3 Golf cheap because they were terrible. No, not just saying it because I hate them all, but the Mk3 was incredibly awful. If you rate them, then fair enough as hopefully you'll have done a few miles driving one so you know what they're like.

A diesel is the only one you should buy, and that's just because of the fuel pump.

The only thing a harlequin needs to finish it off is a momo benetton steering wheel and gear knob

I'm currently driving a 2002 Suzuki Swift, I don't think they could be much worse than that...

Seen a few with that steering wheel it's a bit much really, especially when it's teamed with four different coloured wheels and four different coloured seats.

on that red thing at ther start of this tread, is that a tide mark of doom coving the bottom of the doors and sills?

That would be me.

Obviously no longer required for this one but I'm local and don't mind helping other people spend their money on chod.

A Suzuki Swift is a nicer drive than a mk3 Golf.

Why exactly is wrong with them? What experience do you have?

Don't they have independent rear suspension? ADVANCED.

Yep, they drive exactly like a Ferrari...
