£500.... track day car. Ideas?

Looking at ZR/ZS, bit pricey at the moment. That R25 GTi looks interesting but again, price range is the killer. Anything else? Fixable is important.

Location: near'ish to London/Essex/Herts is good.

Rather than stripping one out yourself, have a look and see if there's anything suitable already prepared. As a sometime Alfa fan it saddens me to see 155, 75's etc for sale made useless by having the interior stripped out, used a few times then abandoned when boredom set in.

Ford Puma?

Think there is one for sale within budget on this very forum,

MX5, nice cars, worse than the MGF re: back and legs. Puma, viable but better in 1.7 form.

This are pretty shite and will understeer in a cloud of smoke at the first bend but it apparently has 230bhp so will be a hoot, plus it looks GASH.

Search on ebay for track car ... You'll get loads of MOT failures, if you want something road legal that's another few hundred quid.

Suggestions ... anything Tipo based, Alfa 155/145/146, Fiat coupe, Tipo, Tempra

I have a thing about the handling of cars based on the Tipo platform, they usually handle pretty well.

Alternately Daihatsu, 1.3 Sirion should be a reasonable bet.

Mgf , mx5 , Saab turbo, old Honda with double wishbone front suspension . Saxo vts/r

MX5's the predictable answer - Stick some ling-long ditchfinders on it, and enjoy the sideyway-ness.

Cheap parts / lots of spares, non-interference engine, light enough not to eat tyres & brakes & suspension bits. Set up to be fun straight out the box.

My old one was dog slow on the straights, but good fun on the twisties.

The Saab / MG would also be fun, but muller their brakes in a couple of laps if driven properly hard, bugger their wheelbearings if kerb hopping in a BTCC fashion (which is usually good fun) and generally feel like a roly poly boat.

I do know a chap who uses a 9000 turbo on track, and is pretty quick - But it's completely stripped out / runs lots of boost / has uprated suspension, brakes and Toyo R888 semi slicks...A fair bit more than £500's worth.

MGF/MX5 = pain

The Hyundai looks interesting. I might see if I can drum up some interest with a mate or two and expand the budget. Hmm.

That ZT is a bit sad looking but I bet it does shift.

I did the passenger thing in an Elise and my mate cadged a lift in a stripped out MX5 at North Weald. Jesus, could they shift. Sadly now not practicable.

when a friend of mine was all into that track day thing one car we regularly used to see was an Austin A35.

it had an MG Spridget engine and was quick through the corners though less impressive on the straights.

but unlike my buddy's Golf GTi it didn't break. the golf would get to the track under its own power, but have to be towed back home later.

Bloody thing.

Rover 220. Coupé if possible should have enough room and be just within budget.

Turbo will be way over £500 however unless you find a broken 600Ti to engine swap.

What kind of driving are you wanting to do? If you're wanting something that you can set lap times with and try and better them then £500 might be a bit tight I would think. If you just want something to hurl around then pretty much anything would be suitable really.

This isn't as close as you would like but it's on it's third listing now so should be very cheap and bolstered seats are available from posher specs.

This Suzuki has only done 39724 miles

Yeah and hell is having a bad cold spell.

Not into setting lap times, just focused on getting round the track and having some fun.

Decide on what type of car you want and then go from there, as said previously, anything can be fun on track.

Fwd,rwd,4wd?... something small with good handling or something large with comical handling?

Suzuki Swift or a Jag can both be found within budget and will have you grinning on track.

A mate of mine did a track day in a bog standard 1600 Carisma (his track car failed at the last minute) and had more fun in that than in the track prepared car.

Mk2 MR2 is a good shout for lairy rwd fun, and you should be able to find them within budget.
