What a lovely photo!

But what cars in the top right of the picture

Transit - mk3 Cortina - Mini- blank - blank - blank- Avenger - Fiat 128? - Allegro - Merc - blank - Volvo - VW Polo? - Cortina - Maxi - Cortina - Cortina - Cortina - blank.

Should you complete this, a Blankety Blank cheque book and pen will be yours.

I think:

Transit - Cortina - Mini - ? - Fiesta Mk1 - Wolseley 1800 - Avenger - HB Viva - Allegro - Merc - Toyota 1000 - Volvo - VW Derby.

White estate with the boot open by the market looks like a CX Safari..

HB Viva?

I was more thinking Opel thingymajig?

Not Ascona...

In all fairness I reckon that photo dates from a bit earlier than 1980; the newest design visible appears to be that red mk1 Fiesta which was launched '77. Even in a West Yorks mining/textile/market town you might expect there to be some nearly-new stuff! What's surprising is the lack of "old" cars in the pic and by that I mean anything with black number plates. The same view today would surely include a smattering of 10-15 year old motors. Super stuff by the way; I love seeing these old photographs :)

Kadett? Rekord?

I stand by HB Viva unless someone can prove otherwise.

Make sure you have a look at the high res version if you haven't already, it's a very detailed photo. You can nearly read the reg plates of a few of the closer cars! Might assist you in figuring out what each car is.

LOL - the long winter evenings are gonna flyyyy by!!

I reckon I spent half an hour yesterday admiring the photo, no joke! Even once you get past the cars there's a lot of interesting things to note. It's rare to get such an old picture with that much detail in such a huge resolution, even the little people have visible characteristics, check out the old bloke with the tartan trolley at the very bottom, or the fat bloke admiring the blue Maxi! Seriously pondering getting a huge version of it printed and boshed up on the wall in a big glass frame. Arty.

Heres my thoughts on the dark one in the top corner.Chrysler 2 litre? Peugeot 504? Opel Rekord? FE Victor? Mk4 Cortina?Just seen the Stag with roof down in the middle! Brave!

Brilliant pic there. So much to look at! The Cortina Mk3 in front of the CA Ice Cream Van, thats the first time I've seen one in the same colour as the Vanguards Model I have of one.

Much better,it's much easier to identify some of the cars people weren't sure about-I'd say it's definitely an HB Viva, fuel filler cap at the side of the number plate gives it away, what made it awkward was the left hand door being slightly open, changing the shape of the side. And it's the one car in the pic with the old silver-on-black number plates.

Mk 3 Cortina, much easier to tell in the larger pic, anyway.didn't Chrysler 2 Litres all have vinyl roofs(though I guess it could have been a 180  )As Mk 2 Craig said,I reckon it could be earlier than 1980,surely there would be at least one Mk 4 Cortina.

On admiring the highest-res image, can I suggest that it must be no earlier than 1 Aug 1978, given the T-reg Mini in the bottom right :)Craig (also of T-reg vintage)

I'd say two door Viva as well as a knee jerk reaction but the rear lights do look more like the slimmer Kadett variety...

But the orange Fiesta could be an early Starlet no?

The black car made me think Rover at first glance...but could it just be a Mk3 Cortina?

Posted

Bizarre then to see so many mk3 cortinas and not a single mk4!

Isn't that a Mk4 on the road behind the Escort?
Posted

The black car beside the Mini isn't a Cortina Mk3 or a Chrysler 180, neither of them had front quarterlights. I think it's another Hillman Avenger, made to look bigger because it's between a Mini and a Feesty.Does the brown Avenger have Datsun "bin lid" wheel trims?

Posted

Yon black car- could it be a mk2 Cortina? It's too square-rigged to be an Avenger.

Posted

Somthing else that springs to mind with this picture is that it just looks too pristine for 1980... I'd expect to see a good deal of graffiti all over the place....What's the little car then near the blue transit, blue spitfire and blue avenger (?) estate?A lot of blue cars in here ;)

Posted

Most likely, I'm not sure whether the Imp Californian or the Chamios coupé came with a vinyl roof as standard.

There's a bonus point for anyone who can identify what's parked t'other side of the white CF. You can just about see the top of an orangy wing.(Of course the first person to say something authorative like "That's definately a Sandust Brown Mk2 Escort L with optional chrome radio aerial" will get the point as I have no idea either!)

I take my hat off to you Richard, you certainly know your stuff! :D

Been trawling through Flickr for another good old shot of some cars, here's Paris in 1970:

And an almost double sized shot available here to assist: http://www.flickr.com/photos/osbornb/54966261/sizes/o/

I bet there was a lot of horn blasting and shouting going on during this traffic jam, though I guess it looks worse than it is on account of parked cars each side. Looks like someone's been leafleting the leftmost side!

Posted

Is that a Buick Riviera behind the bus coming towards us?Behind that, a 404 estate, unsure but maybe midget, then a P6?

Posted

Wow, fantastic, like a black n white wet dream! :D What's happening with the bus roof?Wonder how many of them are overheating?

Ha! Trappered! I made the colour up, thus proving you to be a CHEATER!The official Ford name for that shade was "Crap".
