Anglevantastic collection of shite- Update 31/08

Hi all,

I used to have a thread with my shite in but for some reason I couldn't find it but found various that I'd contributed separate stuff in so thought I'd have a go of sharing my shite so to speak ....

I do tend to hang onto my cars but in the last couple of years there have been a number of changes, out goes my Mk2 Fiesta Pop and Fiesta XR2 along with a 1988 Talbot camper and a couple of other Lancers I had. In has been the Subaru pick up and Morris Marina. I know how to live the high life..

First up we have my Mitsubishi Lancer - bought off ebay for £260 ish with approx. 24,000 on the clock, now at 33,000 ish and used by mother as main transport so save it rotting away in a field. Great car and really enjoy driving it.

And now my Mitsubishi van - went from this >>

P2140267.jpg

to this >>> it's not finished yet but I was in a rush to get finished for a trip to Denmark and Sweden.

Next up my Subaru Pick up - plan is to rebuild this in 2015

And last but by no means least the latest addition to the fold, I've been after some BL chod for ages and regret massively not buying MrB's Ital all those years ago, especially given what happened to it. So to make amends I bought this, a one owner from new 39,000 Mk3 Marina

So plans are to try and keep this updated with the goings on at Anglevancastle !!! At the moment I'm trying my best to get the Marina on the road asap, it's been off the road for 11 years so needs a far bit of recommissioning.

Posted

If there is a way of improving that fleet, I cant think of it!    Every Marina should come with a matching recovery truck....Look forward to seeing the progress on that - looks Winnah to me.   I really miss seeing Anglia vans, too, they were the first thing I ever drove.

i'm sorry but you got the stripe wrong on the mishimusi van- green, green? it should be BEIGE!

Had to let my t'other half and little un have some input in the build 8) if it was me it would have been beige !!!

If anyone is interested in the build on the L300 (I don't plan to repeat it here) it's other on't Blue forum

Been working on the Marina the last couple of days but will update where I am, I was ill in the summer so things took a little back step but my mojo is back and I'm keen to get the Marina on the road asap. Luckily as it's mostly conventional set up I'm hoping it wont take too long. This is the first BL that I've tackled since abandoning a 1300 and 3litre back in the nineties. Hopefully this one wont defeat me...

First things first, while the engine runs we have no clutch, after taking the slave and master out I found the slave was seized solid and the master just wanted new rubbers and a new link pipe. The slave was soaked for a bit then I gradually started to move the piston till eventually it came out, cleaned up and new seals. I'm keeping fingers crossed on the slave as they are available but not cheap.

while underneath I noticed the gearbox was a replacement - not bad for 39000 !!! I'm so used to Fords lasting longer this is amusing but worrying in the same sentence.

All bled however still no clutch so assumption is it's stuck! bugger, So started on rear brakes, noted axle seal was leaking so that was the first job

I've soaked the adjusters in the hope that I can free them off, I've new seals on the way and already have new shoes and

cylinders. I'm going to have the backing plates shot blasted and then reassemble.

Hopefully then have a decent handbrake and can then try to free the clutch off, I've also taken the master cylinder off to

reseal that. When and if I get this mobile I can then move it in and out of the garage to do the welding..

I'd been watching the conversion process of your L300 over on Retrorides and must say you've done a proper job! We did a very cheap conversion job on our Hiace but have since sold for a profit, so am itching to do one again, albeit in not such a mingebag spec this time. I might chuck out one or two of the cheapies again though (if I can find a van cheap enough to work on), as it seemed to attract a lot of attention and bids when selling.

Here's hoping you make a nice profit on the Capri but take some more pictures before it leaves you!

Cheers Jon, to be honest I've had loads of great feedback on the van and it's proved it's weight in gold. It drives spot on with the low mileage and returns 35mpgon a run so cant complain. Be with me for a while yet.

I've loads of pics of the Capri and will be really sad to see it go, my lad was 7 when I bought it and he's 20 next year, he's adamant I should keep it. I've also had lots of stick off my mates saying I'm swapping the 2.8 for a Marina !!! but the Marina cost me less than 1/2 the price the calipers on the Capri !!!

Posted

Love the marina. Have often wondered why the dashboard is curved in such a way the driver cant see the radio etc.

I'm liking that marina, I remember the 1.7 seemed to have a comparatively decent turn of speed too..just

Don't forget to grease the trunnions!

OOOOh....Love that crapi. I had an identical one, bought it in 95, same colour as yours. 2.8 special, lowered with Jan

speeds. Gawd you would not believe how many times I had that thing apart, new gearbox, replace LSD internals, fit ported

heads, quick rack, countless sets of tyres and brakes. I knew every nut and bolt on a first name basis.

B91PVT.....RIP..........Happy days.

Like the Scooby pickup, looks in good condition from the photo, makes a welcome change, most of the ones you see have been driven into the ground and beyond by mad farmer-types.

Looking for an excuse to buy one myself! :-)

Nice little collection, i will say though if you get rid of the Capri you will kick yourself down the line, if it were me and I could help it is would hang on to it, it's only going to increase in value further.

Right then time for an update.

Well the Capri has gone, I am little sad and every time I see a Capri I do kick myself a little however the Ford scene is not what it used to be and I'd sort of got bored of it to be honest. I loved the car and owned it since 2002 but it was not getting used. I get a great offer for it after telling a few people to shove their offeres where the sun dont shine.Eventually a guy came forward that had a sensible head and the deal was done.

I've also been selling all my Capri spares (made over £1000 on ebay so well chuffed) Still have a tailgate if anyone wants it - free to a shitter if you collect it.

So whats been happening with the fleet?

The Mitsubishi Lancer has just gone through another MOT (i've had that 4 years now and it's been brilliant - now at around 35,000 miles) Could do with a little tidying - I may sell this so if interested let me know. I have a car full of spares for it also.

The L300 van has again gone through another MOT and is coming up to 4years in the fleet - really like this and never get bored of using it or driving it. Fitted a new windsreen recently (£80 for the screen) and a couple of hours one friday evening to fit. Also carried out some soundproofing to the cab area which has improved things and added a double din stereo - other than that nowt to report.

The Marina has been a slow project but i'm getting there

Been cracking on with this now and keen to get on the road asap now.

Rear brakes rebuilt and inner tub undersealed

P7010539_zpsxjnmra1l.jpg

P7010540_zpsmrpni2he.jpg

Had a go at polishing the boot lid - then the heavens opened which stopped play - however it's polishing up nice and is the original paint. Few corrosion 'spiders webs' but only minor and I can live with that.

P7010545_zpsnk3n1xgw.jpg

Same on Bonnet - it could do with 2 lamp panels and a front valance to make a spot on car - anyone help out?? I have 2 new wings now

P7010543_zpsxqi5vj7b.jpg

Drivers lower wing and 'A' post now welded, 100% no filler and made lower wing be hand = Wheels / tyres are not supporting and are my fail safe if the axle stands fail - please excuse the mess, its not my house and as my friend is helping me with storage I've promised to help clear the yard when i'm done...

P7010535_zpslcotpypa.jpg

Found a hole on the o/s chassis leg and o/s/r jacking point which has been welded. O/S and rear now undersealed. Rear brakes rebuilt with new shoes / adjusters / pipes/  cylinders / Flexi and seals.
Front calipers are rebuilt now and caliper bolt has been drilled and retapped when it snapped on removal.

Clutch is still stuck, ran it up to tempreture, did 5 miles on the axle stand, temp gauge sat at just below middle the whole time but it rang out of petrol. I've put another gallon in and will top up with another gallon when I next go down (it's not at my house)
I'll finish off the front brakes (new flexis / pipes etc) and then will attempt another run up and with working brakes we may be able to crack the clutch off.

Front brakes now rebuilt with recon calipers / bearings re greased and sealed and new pipes / flexis at the front.Took a lot of faffing but I now have a great pedal - well chuffed.

Only a minor bit of welding to the n/s sill and still the clutch to free then it's ready for the MOT..

The Anglia - I'm keeping that under the radar a little bit but suffice to say i'm still working on it and when it's finsihed thats when i'll post some pics up. Very very close for the MOT but not quite there.

The Subaru pick up - Again nowt nuch happened but it has now moved so rebuild will start soon.I have brand new genuine wings / lower valance and a few other bits and bobs - should be a quick project.

And I've bought another car - so that needs an introduction and update. All I say is it will fit in at Autoshite towers as it's a kit car and is 1275cc A series powered>>

Great work, be good to have it back on the road.

Forgot to add in the last post - I've also inherited a car. I've known this car for about 7 years and i've done most of the servicing (manily just oil changes and general checking over at MOT time)

The old lass that owned it will be sadly missed and I treated her like an adopted gran. I was very sad to hear she'd past away but she had a good life.

Anyways I received a call from her daughter and she asked if I would take the Polo on. I'm not sure what to do with it really. it's done about 60,000 ish miles from new. Its a few battle scars on but generally it's an ok bus.

They have asked if I will collect it in the next week or 2 - then i'll decide what to do with it.

P2091136_zps7bbbxmdr.jpg

P2091137_zpsyrdx79eu.jpg

I'll update when it's collected.

And then there is the latest addition - i've only ever owned 2 a series engined cars. A 1972 Austin 1300 and a 1988 Metro. I've never owned a Mini but had a serious hankering for a Mini Traveller (Way out of my league price wise now) I would like a Mini but again they rot / I dont want a weld a thon project and decent ones fetch good money.

Next I was looking at Mokes - if I cant afford a mini I cant afford a moke !! a couple of years ago I was bidding on some on ebay but always outbid. And gave up. Then a chance meet up with someone who owned an AMC CUB - these are a Moke a Like but not GRP and really well built. I was very impressed but even these are quite rare.

So started looking for one to get my fix of a series power and a Moke (ok a kit car moke) After many searches I managed to find one. And not only did I find one but i'm told this is the oldest one known.

I'll do more of an introduction later if interested

Thought i'd have another attempt at a fleet update.

Starting with the Polo

I'm picking this up this weekend, I'll update more then. It's not been on the road for a few months now and I know the MOT has expired. Plan is to put it straight in for an MOT and move it on. Probably give it a quick valet first. A look on the t'internet shows these dont fetch that much but to be honest you dont see many one owner low mileage ones so we'll see.

Anglia - Not much to report on that one, Had the Lotus steels shot blasted and painted - ready for tyres to be fitted.

I've also had the Turbo returned from Turbo Technics which has proper skinted me. Decided to go for am upgrade as it was only £70 more but still made the final bill mouthwatering.

20150831_124631_resized_zpsl1wylyii.jpg

Lancer - I've just had that MOT'd 3 advisories CV boot, Wheel bearing and tyres cracking. I've had this 4 years now and it's at approx 34,000 ish. Parts duly bought and will be fitted very soon. I've decided the Lancer is looking a little sorry for itself so i'm treating it to a refresh.

After the mechanical work is done i'll be fitting some refurbished alloys with new tyres / fit a new windscreen and tidy some minor corrosion out on the arches. As I had a spare set of alloys, i've had those blasted and painted - just need some new tyres now.

The before

And after

L300 Camper

This is turning into a little bit of a day van however we have been away for a couple of weekend recently. I also treated it to a new stereo / altimeter / leveler, while doing the stereo I also carried out some sound proofing and what a differance - lot nicer at crusing speed. Also fitted a new tow bar. I've wanted a tow bar for ages but the prices were always stupid money (£200+) you dont see used ones, then by chance saw that just-tow was having an offer at £79 on a new tow bar - snapped it up. Very easy to fit and no scotch locks here, all soldered in properly. Well chuffed as the main reason was to carry bikes however it also means I can borrow my mates trailer and collect stuff (yeah!! just dont tell the wife) I have to be honest and this is one of my favourites - just remot'd it with no issues so ready for another year.

Soundproofing

Stereo and altimeter

And on a recent camping trip

20150710_195613-1_resized_zps4yky7j5d.jp

Subaru - Nowt to report, bought a weber carb for it but thats it

Cub - Done loads on that, it's probably a thread in itself.

Marina - Driving me round the bend, Clutch still stuck, feel it's going to be a gearbox out job and I cant be arsed..Really losing my mojo fast on this. It's so close though so will keep perservering, fitted some replacment tyres for the rear and also replaced the tie bar bushes. Other than that nowt much to report.

I think thats it - will that do ??

Is the Polo a 3 or 5 door?

Son No1 is learning to drive and wants a 5-door for getting sprogladite in and out of the car

Excellent updateyness on this very varied fleet.

Posted

Thanks :-) and yeah I have been told on numerous occasions that I'm a little strange in my car collection !!!

Regards the Polo - i've not seen it for a while however im 90% certain it's a 3dr. Will no more when the garage doors are opened this Saturday..

Forgot to say I also fitted a new windscreen in the L300 - I thought I took pictures but cant find any. It was bonded originally but I obtained an 'in-direct' seal off a delica in excellant condition so refitted it using that. My lad helped my cut the old one out, couple of hours later it was fitted (£90 for the new screen) Had to swap as there was a great big chip in the drivers eyeline !!

I can't believe I haven't noticed this thread before, what an eclectic fleet!  I'm very taken with the Marina, amazingly... but you'll be a bit less amazed when I say my initials are EWR!

why thank you :-) does that mean a show of intent if and when the marina is ever put up for sale... as a side note the marina was purchased from Kineholme garage @ Otley north of Leeds. It's still there but it's now a used car garage (was Renault for a while).

My mate has a 1500 Allegro special and when the Marina is on the road we're off for a road trip (it's not far, won't be that brave for a longer trip) I need to persuade any other bl pervs to join Trigger?

If you roffle it, definitely!  Sales, well it all comes down to that terrible perfect storm of price and timing, doesn't it?

If all the holes line up.....

I missed this thread. Your Capri was lovely, shame to sell it!

Love the Marina too. A car I'd like to have some day. My uncle had a few and my grandad had one brand new in Cyprus, great cars!

That Marina brings back memories. My dad had a 1.7L in vermillion (great colour), bought new from Dutton Forshaw in St Annes on Sea in 1979. It was his first new car and replaced a well travelled Hunter GT. I had forgotten about that special ergonomically designed dash with the centre console helpfully angled away from the driver. Marvelous!

A fabulous collection....I doff my hat to you sir

You won't of seen this one!

He bought it new in 72 (I think) when he was in the RAF at Akrotiri. The only new car he ever had. He went to the Cyprus wine festival with my Grandma one night not long after getting it and ended up driving home afterwards. They left the road on a corner and hit a big 'sharp turn' road sign writing the car off. They were both injured but walked away amazingly.

I've got a really old photo somewhere, I'll try to find it. It was dark blue with the original style front end. Lovely looking car.

My uncle had a couple too, in this country and liked them. I can't remember one of them but the one I do was a later Marina, it was R or S reg I think, in that orangey red colour. He went everywhere in it and did some impressive mileage.

Posted

Cheers everyone, it's amazing how much love the Marina gets, when ever I mention it to folk i do on the whole get great feedback. (Not sure they would own one though !!). When you think about how many there were around up until the mid nineties, lots of people have memories of them whether postive or negative it's still our motoring history. My only link is my uncle had a pick up version (as well as a sandglow Princess).

Due to the amount of vehicles I have and the fact I really want to keep the Marina I'm in discussions with sorting long term storage but that wont be till next year. I want it tested and run it and then collect the parts required to fully restore it. I've picked up new wings but need headlamp panels and a lower valance.

I'll update the Cub next as thats had a fair bit of work done to it recently.

How have i missed this thread?! That's a awesome collection of cars you've got going on there, All of them get my temperature rising!

I must say, everything about that Marina is right, I hope you've frisbeed those wheel trims though!

Posted

i don't believe that i've missed this thread....

and like many i'm loving the marina. my dad had one when i was little, from the ages of 5-ish though to 10 or 11. it was a crap car, but a great one too. i mean it eventually fell to bits but it always started and took us on holidays and the like. it was bright orange (vermilion, or blaze perhaps?), and a mark 2 super deluxe. i still have the pattern of the vinyl trim burnt into the backs of my legs (freezing in winter, burning hot in summer) the reg was something like LPY576P.

several incidents spring to mind, one when my mother was learning to drive and on the parkway and hit either first or reverse instead of third.... that destroyed the gearbox which i think must have been weak on them as i think my dad had 2 or 3 in the car when we owned it.

then there was the time my dad spun it around 180 degrees on the way down to apple orchard from Skelton, with us kids and me mam in the car. in his defense it was raining.

and finally, as a youngster i remember a fun* game been to run up to the front of the car and pushing my fingers through the wings. they were rotten around the headlamps where they all went. dad wasn't that pleased, i do recall him fixing it using fiberglass and a rattle can, in a time honoured bodge type way.....

i remember that dashboard too, just what was BL thinking? in a LHD car that arrangement of the centre console would have made sense, while on a RHD car it was just plain daft!
