MrDuke Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Haven't the Chinese been doing this stuff for about a decade now? I find it genuinely amusing.
STUNO Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Yes, and I'm pretty sure that includes some former Chery products .
Micrashed Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Im surprised they get away with it to be honest. Could you imagine the outcry if Citroen copied the Defender and called it the De' Fendier?
Cavcraft Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 They DO get away with it. I remember reading an article a year or two ago when BMW threatened to sue a company for what was a blatant rip off of the X5. Some Chinese court or something had the final say, which surprisingly* said it looked nothing like the X5 and the case was thrown out! andy18s 1
Guest Lord Sward Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Could you imagine the outcry if Citroen copied the Defender and called it the De' Fendier? Well they couldn't built it any worse. Banger Kenny and scruff 2
MrDuke Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 It's not a battle that needs fighting anyway - the people who can actually afford the genuine imported articles, will buy them regardless. The knock-offs are purely for those that don't have the dosh, and who probably have little knowledge of cars outside of their appearance anyway. It certainly isn't losing any yuan for LR or BMW. STUNO 1
brickwall Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 They are having a go at them because the Landwind is being sold in Europe. This gives them leverage as they could sue here or in any European country. Suing in China is pointless.
MrDuke Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 But can you imagine many people here (or elsewhere in Europe) buying one without checking the NCAP ratings? I suspect the only UK customers would be the people who stuck Bentley badges on Chrysler 300s. garethj, robinmasters, Cavcraft and 1 other 4
Pillock Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 I thought Chery got busted for ripping off the Daewoo Matiz so badly you could interchange parts... As in, had to stop selling it. Properly busted. http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2004-12/18/content_401235.htm

Skizzer Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 But can you imagine many people here (or elsewhere in Europe) buying one without checking the NCAP ratings? I suspect the only UK customers would be the people who stuck Bentley badges on Chrysler 300s. 188bhp in something that looks like a Khan version of an Evoque for £14k? I fear lots of people would, although probably not the same people as would otherwise shell out £35k+ on a new Evoque. The real pain for Land Rover, though, is when its customers get pissed off that everyone thinks they are driving a Chinese knock-off, and start buying those equally twattish Volvo/BMW/Audi 4x4s instead. People often talk about the US as the epitome of what they call heartless, greedy, morally bankrupt capitalism and the evils of unfettered Big Business: it's nothing compared to China. scruff, STUNO, MrDuke and 1 other 4
KruJoe Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Landwind is being sold in Europe. Wow! Is it? I want one. I hate the Evoque, common as muck around here, what a ridiculous vehicle. But a Landwind X7, I'd love to park on our village green, or outside the pub, with giant advertising vinyl graphics down the side, including the Chinese writing, and "from ONLY £13,499, The NEW LandWind X7 by Jiangling Motors, DEPOSIT 99p!" Maybe not, I don't have £14k to burn... but get me some "LandWind X7 by Jiangling Motors" fliers, and I'll gladly stick one under the wipers of every Evoque I see for the next 12 months scruff, Craig the Princess, Richard and 8 others 11

PiperCub Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 I don't know if it was a piss-take or not but I read years ago that there wasn't a direct translation to Chinese/Taiwanese or word for 'Copyright'.There's certainly no understanding fo it's concept anyway!! I think it was Top Gear that highlighted the obvious-X5-copy-that-clearly-wasn't-anything-of-the-sort because the Chinese court said so.
Timewaster Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 How ironic that this beat the Official Chinese made Evoke to market by a couple of months. The Chinese land rover factory is in partnership with Cherry. The same Cherry that made the QQ which was such a blatant copy of the Daewoo matiz that the panels were interchangeable.
steve_earwig Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 The same Cherry that made the QQ which was such a faithful copy of the Daewoo matiz that the panels were interchangeable.Efa. Looks good for 14 grand or whatever it was. Even better if it's actually any good. You just know spares are going to be stupidly expensive but never mind, buy one, rebadge it as a Lange Lover and drive it into the ground.
