Yup. That sums it up pretty well. Amazing. Just for good measure.

I'm really enjoying this thread. I'm not sure which car I have the greatest admiration for - cinnamon for being so time warp mint*, the LE for surviving a holocaust of bodges, or the white one for not being instantly thrown around a primate oval. What's the future for the white one - doer upper or spares car? Orsomes work all round. 8)

Definitely a doer upper at some stage - it's safe for now.

Well I'm from near Crich and I can't remember a spitfire making emergency landing and anyone who knows Crich will know it's no mean feat finding a road straight enough to land on!

Edd, please would you post the video you took of the Alpine hooning up the hillclimb from Cwmstain?

I'm sure folks would enjoy it!

As soon as I gain adequate internet access at home, could be next week or so

So four days down in Talbot rehab...

Never straightforward with this car. The plan was to put the new quarter on and paint in the four days but we found so much extra rot that had to be addressed that the quarter remains off, the inner tub remains off, and the majority of repair sections made up or cut out of a donar car are still to be welded on.

Here are the extra curricular bits.. similar story to the work I did on the passenger side. Have to thank Simcat for all this work, I'm down here to learn the black arts.

Rear corner of boot floor, where rear crossmember attaches.

More window lip to rear of rear door pillar

An old MOT repair plate straight over the original rot, that I suppose served it's purpose

Inner wheel arch area cleaned up a bit!

You can't even see any trouble behind the bump stop bracket until Stu stated cleaning up the pack rust from it between it and the chassis rail, pushing the two apart.

MOAR!

Rear crossmember.. this has both sustained a bit of an impact in the past, bending the bumper brackets and bumper out of shape, and also the crossmember itself.. which is rotten yay

post-5180-0-61366100-1435003690_thumb.jpg

Crossmember chopped out.. looks straighforward in pictures. Wasn't.

The bump stop bracket had rot behind it in the chassis rail so had to come off in order to repair the chassis behind... will it ever end?

A new bit of metal ready to go in the rear chassis rail

Tacked internally, seamed externally and sealed afterwards

Repair section fabricated for chassis rail behind bump stop bracket, bump stop bracket cleaned up ready to refit.

Shite the bed; the tin worm is strong in that one.

Wowsers.  I wouldn't have known where to start.

Nor would I. "Well done" doesn't even begin to express my admiration, Mr SambaS. This blue one actually reminds me of my old FSO Caro. Similar shape and colour, and probably the same levels of rot if I'd actually gone prodding.

Posted

top work SambaS! great to see someone get properly stuck in!

have you considered getting a Scimitar badge for it to remind you of how little metal was in it before you started?

Posted

Crikey, that's a lot of bran flakes you're digging out.

The plan is to come back down to Kent in August to finish this off, it will be painted too- now on the train back to North Yorkshire!

Blimey. I think even i'd have thrown in the towel there.

I think someone had already thrown in the towel, the bin-bag, the newspaper, the egg-boxes....

congratulations sir both on the progress that you have made and for not packin' up and walking away....

when confronted by that i think i'd have just cried.....

Posted

...lots of 'onion peeling' style  rust excavation there - bring a tear to the eye, it would...

We could have resisted prodding some of the suspect areas, especially around the bump stop mount, and integrity would probably have lasted another couple of years or so, but, with the quarter and outer wheelhouse removed, access is relatively easy, so it made sense to fix properly.

This is the type of thread that makes me feel warm inside. Well done to all concerned.

Please tell me it didn't emerge from inside a door panel or something. :)

Incredible work. Just goes to show - if it looks like it's made from porridge, it probably is made from porridge.

Really highlights just how meaningless "12 months of MOT" in a car advert is!

As it's already made an appearance on this thread, here are a couple more pics of the equally sorry white Alpine, currently keeping the LE company at Talbot rehab.

A sorry pair they may be, but for both the only way now is up.

After 24 years festering in a collapsing garage, this base model LS was hauled off for scrap, but cunningly managed it save itself from the infamous oval by making sure it's clutch slave cylinder stuck out. Thus thwarting all motion.

Plan B involved ebay, and it's fate secured.

Some nasty crusty rustiness at the base of the passenger A pillar, due to the leaking garage roof.

post-19509-0-42844700-1435262528_thumb.jpg

A tree was cut down on top of it, smashing the tail gate glass. The tailgate is toast  anyway, but there's a dent in in roof that will need sorting.

Quick fix for now - replacement glass and duct tape...

Interior was full of rubbish from the collapsed garage, now cleaned up well.

It's a 1.3, with 4 speed Simca gearbox, 54k on the clock.

So, for now, secured, will be in the dry, and hopefully back on the road in due course.

I wonder what it would be like if the garage it was stored in wasn't in such a bad state of repair? Pretty much rust-free I imagine.

roy axe did a great job on the alpine, they are a nice looking car.

its just a shame that the metal seems to be water soluble.....

There's filler in the front wings and tailgate, and a 'repair' to the bottom of the driver's door, probably done when the car was 8-10 years old, but yes most of the rot occurred when in the garage, or more likely shack - judging by the amount of compost we had to remove off the front before trailering down the M6!

Poor car. I'm glad that it's in good hands.
