Swift is well due a service, if I can get it done tomorrow (if it doesn't piss down again) I'll dissect the one in there now, see what's different, I think it's a Fram branded one in there.

the 'AC Dimple' is a - as stated - a dimple embossed into the folds of paper/filter media... keeping them equally spaced in the round...

.. crappy, elcheappo types might 'rupture' if the media is crammed together on one side and stretched the other.

SO says the advertising blurb....   :?

& Equally..... I have seen chopped open filters of < dubious provenance > shown to have only 'half height' filter media... by all accounts the most expensive part... so be warned.

Replace Toilet Paper in Frantz TP Oil Cleaner 8-2…:

This fellow is however probably taking miserliness to the extreme.

Fram have a bad name, but I was lead to believe there are various qualities of FRAM - when I have used them, I've generally been impressed.  The only way to try and make an unscientific judgement is to look for a pressure valve (not all have them) and see how many paper fins you can see through the drain holes.  Yes, without counting them like Rainman, you can see a difference, but price isn't necessarily a give away.

Speaking as someone in the motor trade, there can be a vast difference in price between filters that look outwardly the same. These days I try and strick to British made MannHummel filters.  And yes, I've counted paper fins/blades in filters several times.....

Funny you post this today. I was hacksawing a filter open today and was wondering if anybody else does this!

In the filters I see at work  the check valve is fitted to horizontal or otherwise angled filters, vertically fitted ones don't need it as the oil doesn't drain back. Probably complicated by several applications using the same filter at times, it won't matter if it has one it doesn't need.

So are we saying that Halfords oil filters are alright? I mostly use Halfords ones as I get them cheap with my trade card and they're just convenient when I decide on a Saturday morning that one of my motors could do with an oil change.

I get to cut open filters quite often at work, usually transmission ones identical to engine oil ones. The paper element doesn't like to pass water and contaminated oil bunches the folds of paper into two clumps on the ones I see, it only needs a little water to do this.

I remember seeing a comparison of many different oil filters a few years back (link now dead) for some kind of Honda. The closest in visual quality to the OE, at least for that application, was Purflux but Halfords was still pretty decent.

^^^ YaY!!! I fit a [longer than Renault part] Honda filter to my SAVVY.  Not an O.E. Honda part.. but one to fit a Honda  :-D

I change the oil n filter often, every 3-5k & as you say, Halfords ones are reasonable (with trade card) & convenient - have used plenty of them & never had any problems

How do you get one of these trade cards ?       - And do you have to prove you're in the 'trade' ?

(Pretty sure I've asked this before, but  my memory is shit)

I got mine years ago when they launched them - I asked about it, they asked me where I worked, I told them, they asked me if I knew such a such somebody who worked where I worked, I said yes I know him & they sent me a card - the parts are no cheaper than what I could them for from a parts supplier but it's handy for reasonable quality parts/consumables etc out of hours like

I got my Trade Card through being a member of the IMI.

I used to cut mine open- that was something that the engine guys at the airport would do on each engine service. Mostly to look for twinkly deposits, which indicate the engine needs a bit more of an inspection than normal.

Preventative maintenance in the "don't let it get any worse" school of thought.

I used to cut tractor hyd filters open quite often . amazing how many bits of o rings , gear teeth and circlips end up in there. Useful info for diagnosing faults . mainly full of dwarf from the brakes tho

The Peelers lifted yet another load of fake Hyundai-KIA branded stuff recently, and the oil filters are of the loo roll variety.
