drum Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 It's time I shared a pic of my moped. I got this beauty for my 14th birthday. That was a long time ago. I will attempt to get it going and back on the road. Wish me luck. saucedoctor, M'coli, Charlie Croker and 4 others 7
Charlie Croker Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 Superb stuff. I had a black Maxi VHG 828V in 1983 when I was 16. I hope to see much more of this.lol. drum 1
plasticvandan Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 Mine was RRX 65M when I was 16 in 2004,purple,legshields and panniers,I did 3500 miles in 2 months, might have to look into getting another! drum 1
Fabergé Greggs Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 Yaaas! I've got one. Throw an expansion chamber, 70cc kit and some stiffer clutch springs on it and fly! drum and saucedoctor 2
oman5 Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 I've wanted one of these since I was 16. Still do actually. One of those mobylette things would do
Micrashed Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 I had a Tomos Disco once over, reliable as fook, and fairly breezy for a 50cc. saucedoctor 1
saucedoctor Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 Funnily enough, due to my then-girlfriend (in 1990) having a turkey of a Tomos, I know for a fact that you can get one in the back of a Talbot Samba. As Mr Shed says, it was a nippy wee machine when it was running properly. 17 year old girls fit in the back of a Samba as well, and are more fun. Cavcraft, mercrocker, DSdriver and 2 others 5
chaseracer Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 Puch Maxi, KUY791T: my first motorised transport, December 1981. With the single-speed E50 transmission and my fat arse, perfectly suited* to the wide open flat polders of the Malvern Hills...
bub2006 Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 As much as I love cars, bikes will always be my first love and as such I owned a tomos a3ms. It was cheap and I thought it was worth a giggle. Once had an indicated 35 from it. Brakes where very scary though and premix was a pain. Anyways, all the best with getting it going and would love to hear more. As mentioned before, the 70cc airsal kits apparently make them fly. Also slightly overfill the gearbox for later change from first to top.
drum Posted November 2, 2014 Author Posted November 2, 2014 Let's see pics of your puchs! I've had this one since 1983 and it will be well over 25 years since it was running. I'm hoping a clean of the carb and some fresh petrol will see it start. The tyres are shagged and if you zoom in, you'll see there's a nasty ding in the rear wheel rim. I'm hoping that will knock out. The front headlight casing is broken after I came off on farm tracks while carrying several pints of fresh milk from the neighbour's cow.
UmBongo Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 I recall that Woolco used to sell these or similar in their big stores. They would mostly be in with the pedal cycles, mostly. I liked the idea of buzzing around town on one. Mind you, I was only eleven years old at the time.
Cavcraft Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 You could get a Tomos from the Littlewoods catalogue I think, certainly one of them did them I think they were like £5.99 per week forever and ever. saucedoctor 1
Richard Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 I once scalped a Tomos moped on my pushbike in top gear going uphill. The Tomos rider was paddling to keep moving. alf892 and Angrydicky 2
plasticvandan Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 i still have a speedo and set of 6v bulbs for a Maxi if needed drum 1
drum Posted November 3, 2014 Author Posted November 3, 2014 I remember the clubby book tomos (I remember the shower screens too). @dan, I may take you up on those cheers.
chaseracer Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 I once scalped a Tomos moped on my pushbike in top gear going uphill. The Tomos rider was paddling to keep moving. Well... he was up shit creek! Anyone..? Richard and Rusty_Rocket 2
greengartside Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 I had a Maxi when I was 8, it was a complete non-runner but I was at the age where I was enjoying pulling parts off things and (unsucessfully) putting them back on. SCL 27J - it was untaxed for many years before I had it. Still got the Serck number plate somewhere.
martc Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 I recall that Woolco used to sell these or similar in their big stores. Woolco used to sell the Tomos, which looked suspiciously like a Puch Maxi - was there a connection? I also remember Halfords selling MBK mopeds (MBK = Yamaha France, nee Motobecane).
RayMK Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Nice one. My friend had a Maxi, same model. It was always better at hill climbing than my Peugeot CT but not as fast downhill. My Peugeot was bought in Roermond in 1967 (Netherlands) and I rode it home to Lincoln when Dad was posted back to the UK. It was last on the road in 1981, pressed in to service when my Viva head gasket failed and the replacement Herald estate ripped a rear outrigger off when I braked. The Peugeot is in my garage, also with a kinked rear wheel. You'll enjoy the Maxi. 30mph never felt so good! drum 1
drum Posted November 4, 2014 Author Posted November 4, 2014 Tried to take the carb off and clean it but the throttle slide is stuck so I've soaked it in plusgas for the night. Still sporting its most recent tax disc AnthonyG, Angrydicky, bub2006 and 1 other 4
drum Posted November 10, 2014 Author Posted November 10, 2014 Moped update! I had to take the throttle cable off with the carb as the slider was glued in with 25 year old two stroke mix. All my knowledge* comes from YouTube so, naturally, I cooked the carb in boiling water for half an hour. This freed up the slider so I duly applied a liberal dousing of mr muscle. Nice and clean Even my dainty 16 stone on the pedals couldn't turn the engine so head off to see if I can unsieze it. I had sprayed penetrating oil in the plug hole a couple of days earlier and with some gentle persuasion, the piston was sliding nicely.I have some video of this but it's on my phone so only I get to enjoy that. I threw it all back together to see if it would start. Nice strong spark, but the throttle cable is shagged and the fuel tap is gummed up. I put a fuel line onto the carb from a bottle but despite frenzied pedalling, no new life was breathed by the old puch. I'll try again at the weekend. Fabergé Greggs 1
